Here is a new website for movie info and backdrops, please give it a test and provide any feedback in this thread or on thelighthouse (http://meticulo.lighthouseapp.com/projects/17044-themoviedborg/overview) account.

themoviedb.org (tmdb) | The open movie database (http://www.themoviedb.org)

Features
Actor cross referencing
Personal my movies feature
Fanart and Coverart
Wiki like functionality
Youtube trailer links
Plot tags
Personal ratings

All the coding work was done by TravisBell and FForde so aim your thanks at them . I will be working with the data but we need help from all the sites users to keep it current. The API will come in the future, so no plugin interfaces yet. But we would be interested to find out what people think of the basic site so far. Eventually this should be a one stop show for all your movie information needs so we don't have to rely on imdb any more.

Looks like a very good idea. I hope you guys open up an api for it, similar to thetvdb.com.

I would like to suggest something though. On the movie page, you cycle through pictures/backdrops of the movie. Is there a way to manually cycle through them instead of just waiting until one you like comes up? If not, I think there should be a way to see all backdrops at once, or at least manual cycle buttons (ie. Prev Next buttons)

Looks great, keep up the good work :)

Very nice, I like it.

Like matt_cyr said there needs to be a way to see the pictures on demand, instead of waiting for them to cycle.

If you're serious about going up against IMDB I personally think the search box should be more clearly labeled. For instance, someone non tech savy like my mom wouldn't realize that is a search box.

Is this site going to be permanent now, or are we going to switch again in another few months? I have nearly 300 backdrops, but I'm not going to even bother getting them ready for another site until I know this one is going to last more than a few weeks...

Half the stuff I uploaded to Meligrove was never even added to the DB...

Thank you guys for providing this community driven free wiki based site as an alternative to IMDb.com (http://www.imdb.com)

@digitalhigh, you should know that themoviedb.org (TMDb) (http://www.themoviedb.org) is a merge between the Movie-XML.com and Meligrove.com projects (crew and content), so yes, I think you can expect it to be just as permanent as TheTVDB.com (http://www.thetvdb.com), ...we are really looking forward to the official launch, and the open API when it is ready!

So please register and start uploading Porters, Banners, FanArt and Actors Profile images

We wish all the best to TravisBell, FFord, and zag2me with this new venture!

Yup, this one is permanent just like Gamester mentioned. It sucks we are changing things around again but it will be well worth it. With movie-xml going down we decided it was worth the time and effort at not only bringing it back from the dead but combining sites to make it a killer all-in-one.

All 2282 backdrops from Meligrove were migrated to TMDb BUT (BUT!) it is possible that some of them need your help. Since we're actually creating our own database now, information could be missing. Please consult this url (http://www.meligrove.com/forums/topic/50/i-think-some-backdrops-are-missing-from-the-meligrove-import/) for more information.

Posters have been updated to support high res versions on TMDb now. If you browse to a movie and upload a poster it will allow you to view and download the high res version now. Along with this, movies support multiple posters as well, and a new link will appear once a second poster is uploaded.

Keep in mind since all of the original posters are wicked low res, we are in essence starting from scratch but just keeping them around to look at until the new poster database gets large enough for it to run by itself.

What I am getting at is, unless you can click the poster and view the HD version of it, it's an old poster and needs to be replaced, so by all means...

Moving forward of course, we'll have an API for this so these can be pulled down into different apps.

I love the ability to add multiple posters thanks so much for that, I've begun uploading a few covers here and there from my collection, what I was wondering though, are the resolution requirements enforced at all? and is there a filesize limit like on thetvdb.com ?

timdog82001
2008-10-14, 05:41
I'm logged in with the same account I used to create the movie. Also, on a side note, the movie doesn't seem to appear anywhere in search results, though I can still find the movie by going to the "movies i created" section of my profile

travisbell
2008-10-14, 05:48
Interesting... it's possible you need to be an editor/admin in order to create companies. If so, I will probably change it to just a regular user account since I think it's fine for users to create companies too.

I created a ticket (http://meticulo.lighthouseapp.com/projects/17044-themoviedborg/tickets/41-creating-new-companies-doesnt-work-with-regular-user-accounts) and will investigate later tonight when I get home.

timdog82001
2008-10-15, 21:19
I sort of mentioned this in the above section, but that movie I created still does not show up in any search results. Is there a reason for this or is this a known bug? The ONLY way I can find it is by going to the movies i created section in my profile. It doesn't show up in search results at all, and even going to plot genres I associated it with, it doesn't show up there either. Is it just something that needs to get indexed every couple of days or something before it will show up? Here's the movie in question: http://themoviedb.org/movie/13063

EDIT: by the way, if i haven't mentioned it, excellent job on the site.

travisbell
2008-10-16, 01:44
Hey timdog,

That is most perplexing. Indexing usually happens within ~5 minutes of adding a movie so it's not something you usually have to wait very long for...

This is (as far as I know) the only movie that doesn't seem to want to appear in the search results. I have done a quick search of some of the recently added movies and they seem to all show up fine.

I tried changing the title to force a reindex but still nothing... it's like this movie never made it in, at all. Aside from deleting and trying again, I am not sure what else I can do.

You've done a great job at adding the content though! Really appreciate the time. As a test, we could create a second movie and see if it shows up... remember, you will have to give the indexing service atleast 5 minutes before it will show up.

travisbell
2008-10-20, 02:01
Hey timdog,

Just thought I'd add something of mention.

While I am still not sure why that movie won't show up in the "Movie" results, I managed to get popularity's calculating so it is atleast showing as the first result in the "Popular Results".

Still totally confused by that one...

Hi guys - just thought i'd relay my experience:

I found TMDb last week, whilst (finally) sorting and arranging my media - I thought it had been going for ages by the looks of it - apparently not! Excellent work by all involved, and absolutely indispensable in the future of XBMC.

A couple of quick Qs:

1. If I find a movie that needs some media uploading (e.g. The Orphanage (http://themoviedb.org/movie/6537)), and I find something suitable with, say, Google Images (like this (http://whatwouldtotowatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/orphanage.jpg)), should I upload it straight away, or do I need to delve into copyright issues and the like?

2. Advertising my naivete, but... which other HTPC/Media-Centres use TMDb/TheTVDb (which is also awesome, btw)?

Thanks again to everyone involved - I look forward to contributing!

***edit***
I wasn't very clear with #2 - what I meant to ask was 'which platforms have/will have APIs/Scrapers to seamlessly utilise the sites. I know we can all just go and grab the media to save locally.

travisbell
2008-11-11, 07:36
Hi NEUR0M4NCER,

I would say that's fine as long as it doesn't have any obvious copyrights. Things like posters and screen grabs are unlikely to have issues though. There are some pretty great websites that have nothing but high resolution media related to movies, I am not sure of the URLs right now but you could try asking on the TMDb forums as there are some pretty active contributors who know.

Since we just launched our API we're just getting going but I've started a list of apps using TMDb, you can see it here: http://api.themoviedb.org/2.0/docs/current-apps.html

Some of those are still in development but those are the ones I know of so far.

Cheers,

Is the Fanart scraper working right now? I have been trying to get new fanart for movies, but its just not coming up with the latest xbmc build.

For example http://themoviedb.org/movie/377
A Nightmare on Elm Street shows 4 fanart pictures, but when I refresh the movie, nothing comes up. it just has the browse button.

vdrfan
2008-11-15, 12:21
You will have to enable Fanart in the Scraper Settings and do a complete rescan in order to get the images. Get Fanart won't work if the scanner did not fetched it on previous scan.

goku31640

Hey goku,

There are some known issues with the current "version 1.0" of the API XBMC is currently using. We have since updated to version 2.0, a much more versatile and permanent platform and tried to get it in before this last version. Alas, it doesn't look like version 2 made it's way in and more than likely, you'll just have to wait until XBMC adopts the new API.

Having said that, the problem doesn't affect all movies, and hopefully we won't have to wait another 1.5 months before the next release :-D

As a member here and at TheMovieDb, could I request a small favor? I am a FanArt lover, like most everyone here, and want to know if you would consider allowing 960X540 Jpg images to be uploaded. The requst is for the xbox user, like myself, that could use those as alternatives to 720 or 1080. Having 400+ movies and 70+ TV Seasons ( and wanting Music......and I guess weather FanArt too??) the systems are just running out of RAM with all the stuff the XBMC keeps up with since Atlantis released.

FourTwentySmilz
2008-11-23, 00:25
Ever since I (and others) have updated, RAM is just being drained. Never had this problem before update. Using MediaStream .95, cause it gives the least issues of all the releases. Wonder what else it could be besides all the HD FanArt?

Have you tried horizions? Very smooth, works wonderfully with all the fanart. I haven't used mediastream...

FourTwentySmilz

I really love some of the views ( like Roller and FanArt for Music) but I just can't seem to fall into to Horizionz like I did MediaStream. I really enjoy the "feel" of MediaStream. And since I like making Themes, I've got one lined up for MediaStream. Did you see the mock-up I posted?

travisbell
2008-11-23, 00:37
Hey FourTwentySmilz,

Unfortunately, the simplest answer is gonna be, no... :D 720p will be the lowest resolution we support and if you are experiencing problems since updating to the new version than obviously it's something to do with the latest version of either XBMC, or MediaStream.

FourTwentySmilz
2008-11-23, 00:59
That's cool Travis.....I'll still be posting 720p at your site....but may upload a 960x540 FanArt pack here for the xbox users.

Just a quick question is the scraper in 8.10/Atlantis for Xbox pointing at TMDB.org? as I seem to be having a nightmare getting all the fanart in....?

Also after a real cheesy one that I cant find anywhere! Disneys Candleshoe. :D

travisbell
2009-01-20, 13:46
Hey Geeba,

It is pointing to themoviedb.org but is using the old API. I believe the latest builds of XBMC are using the newer API but until a new beta is released you might continue to have some issues with getting a certain percentage of backdrops.

Is there a way for us to vote on backdrops or maybe even delete some of them?

There are some really crappy ones that have been uploaded for some movies and often those are listed as the first backdrop so it's the one that gets scraped. If we could rate the backdrops on the site and the highest rated one was listed first, that would help to make sure the scrapers get the higher quality fanart.
