I have a NAS that is connected directly to the MAC i never had problems playing videos from xbmc with smb to the NAS.
I can see the videos I have added but when i go to play it the system locks up and i have to terminal into the mac and reboot it or kill the app and start over.
only thing that works is the HD rip of transformers. Any ideas the formats are .avi

Please post debug log from XBMC to pastebin.com
In Beta2, you can post a debug log by running these 2 commands in Terminal:
cd /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/Resources/tools/xbmcpaster/
./xbmcpaster.pl
You will see a message like:
Using log file located /Users/<your username>/Library/Logs/xbmc.log
Your paste can be found on http://pastebin.com/<something>

It's because the scanner is running. We have a fix on the way for it - see
http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/4896
In the meantime, either wait for the background scanner to finish, or disable scanning on startup.
Cheers,
Jonathan
