Hi again all.

Simple enough this one i think. I'm starting work on backing up all of my DVD's to my NAS server so that i can play them via the Xbox / XBMC.

I have tried a few applications for backing up the DVD's but im not happy with the results. The .AVI's always seem to be too big for my liking, over 1GIG !!

Also the picture quality is not too good.

So, gents, which software package do you all use to back up DVD's via conversion to .AVI or similar.

Do you have a better solution for backing up DVD's?

Thanks chaps

You'd probably be better off checking out the forums and guides over at doom9.org. They are true pros at this kind of stuff.

I've been happy using AutoGK to reencode the vob files to xvid, and depending on the length of the film, winding up with either 2 or 3 CD-sized files... (still over your 1GB limit, obviously, but since you asked what softwares people were using, I figured I'd chime in...)

I use handbrake

http://handbrake.fr

to rip to xVid in an MKV container, and preserve the chapter markers.

This means that when they merge the new libavcodec (after Atlantis) we should have working chapter markers in our compressed DVDs.

Really easy, and good results even with low bitrates.
