Can I run the Beta 1 XBMC Live on a Windows desktop and create a USB instance to be used an AppleTV device? (I don't currently have a Mac) And will this all work without me having to hack the ATV before/separately?
I'm fuzzy on whether the ATV can/should be lumped in generically with more traditional PCs that can boot off of a thumb drive.

XBMC Live will not create the proper GPT format for use on the AppleTV, but it's not that hard. see http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/InstallLiveXBMC. There is an appletv specific usb creator under development, check back in a few days for status.
