View Full Version : Aeon "Stark" - Working screens
I can't go into specifics (NDA), but there's been some interest in Aeon - from two parties, no less - that's caused a bit of uncertainty over the last fortnight. Apologies, then, for the lack of recent news. Life happens.
Any screenshots posted here are intended solely to keep you guys ticking over. Some will be more complete than others but all are subject to change. Some might be unrecognisable by the time they're done. All are captured realtime from XBMC - none is just a Photoshop image. And no, we're not accepting feature requests. To recap: this is a new, upcoming version of Aeon. Aeon "Classic" will shortly become a part of the XBMC Skinning Project, for continued development by anyone who feels like it.
All the best.

Here's the List view. You'll notice a slight difference in style between this and the Settings screens posted previously. Partly, this is because they were developed after the partnership with theDevil came to an end, so there's a natural deviation. Secondly, I wanted a very precise balance between the backdrop and the window content - certainly more than existed in the original Aeon. I've tested this with dozens of different backdrops; not only is the clarity of the foreground objects improved, but the backdrop is also more visible. An ideal balance, I think. There's still stuff left to do with the colour balance, though, and a few labels to add. Oh, and while you can see where the scrollbar goes, the object isn't in yet.
Every list view has its own integrated coverflow, the animations for which are very nice indeed - much nicer than the old music roller, for sure. Also, all the menu options for each media window are visible at once. This is partly because, for the sake of getting this thing finished, I've stripped out all the experimental features from the first Aeon such as trailer windows and the Adult section. I also plan to revise the way the Movie/TV links work so there are no more shenanigans with bookmarks, etc. I suspect this'll involve having a separate Video section or something.

Here's a first look at Aeon's entirely rebuilt Settings area. The first thing to note is the "Virtual Homepage", a fully functioning replica of the normal Home (complete with background switching, RSS etc) that provides an accurate visual reference for much of your customisation. It also acts as the interface for these actions, making for a dramatic improvement in Aeon's user-friendliness. More info below the screen.
http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeonstark_settings_change.jpg
So in the above screen, you move about as you would on the main menu - but selection brings up the dialog and browser for picking new backdrops. Then we come to Furniture, which is where you rearrange the Home page as you see fit. Old Aeon experimented with this a bit; new Aeon completes it. So you can now split the Home menu up and move the pieces about entirely through the Virtual Homepage. I've linked to the screenshots below to save space.
Furniture interface (http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeonstark_settings_furniture.jpg)
Customised Home page (http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeonstark_home_moved.jpg)
The last sneak peek is of the new Reset function for Home page settings. Nothing particular to note beyond the changes in how Aeon informs while providing quick, sensible navigation. Or something.
Purge option (http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeonstart_settings_purge.jpg)
---
I was never entirely satisfied with the half-arsed implementation of the tutorials in Aeon, so they're now wholly integrated into the Settings section. Aside from giving Settings a bit more texture than you'd usually expect, it makes it very easy indeed to change the slides or add new ones. Each menu option selected triggers a tutorial set specific to that subsection. The aim isn't to provide advanced settings for veteran XBMC users, but rather a glimpse of its capabilities and options for newcomers and casual observers. Four screens in all, three of which are links. And remember, nothing should be considered final.

djh, best of luck with the endeavors! Your talent and hard word deserve to be rewarded, and I hope that your work continues to inspire / elevate the products of other skinners and media products!
I hope that you find support to continue pouring time and effort into making what is looking like our community's media browser the most mature option available.

By intrested parties, are you indicating that someone is offering you money or a contract for aeon? I understand you can't go into detail, just wanted to know if we will eventually have to pay for aeon.
Never really doubted you just wanted to stir up the pot a little.

We'll never have to pay for Aeon as long as it's a XBMC-skin.
That's why it's called open-scource. ;)
No, I'm not selling it. It's free and always will be.

To recap: this is a new, upcoming version of Aeon. Aeon "Classic" will shortly become a part of the XBMC Skinning Project, for continued development by anyone who feels like it.Great to hear!, ...however may I suggest that you keep the 'old' Aeon name for the 'classic' and give your new "Stark" skin that you are working on a complete new unique name so that no one will confuse them with each other based on the name.

I suggest "Xhibition", "Xception", or if djh_ got theDevil onboard then ask if it is OK to use the "Fuid" name :;):
And no, we're not accepting feature requests.I hope you do not take offense if I suggest that you choose a default font that is unicode (and preferably also open source).

were there more screenshots that were edited out? I only see one screenshot thats all...
I don't understand... you will put the "old" Aeon into SVN that you won't continue working on and focus your work on the "new" one? Does the NDA prohibit you putting both skins into SVN (if the skins are considered as separate, of course)?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of your work, but I find the secrecy and other parties involved not very typical for XBMC...

Good to hear. Your first post almost made it sound like 2 parties were interested in purchasing it or something along those lines. Can I ask how many people you are working with now and who they are?

The addition or removal of any media will be by submission to NDA only. ;)

I think the business with the interested parties and NDA have to do with an interest in hiring him for his skinning talents. That would most likely mean that any work he creates would be property of this interested entity. So, to save Aeon, he is submitting it to the community after his finishing touches, and moving on to a career with his talent.
If this is the case, best of luck to you, and thank you so much for showing us what this software can do.

Personally, I'd just like a build of Aeon that doesn't hang every other time I go to play a movie. This "total overhaul" is great, but I sure hope that the base functionality issues get addressed too.
And the cloak and dagger stuff seems a bit unnecessary. It's a skin for the Xbox, not the newest windoze OS or something...
There is a difference between "cloak and dagger stuff" and not showing something that doesn't exist or isn't finished. Necessity doesn't come into it.
And no, it's not a skin for the Xbox. It's a skin for modern media software and hardware that by coincidence supports a seven year old machine. You are right about it not being the second coming, though, which is why we won't be falling over ourselves to ensure Xbox compatibility.

I'm not trying to be a smartas$ or anything here, so sorry if I came across like that. I really really like Aeon, so much that I did an entire overhaul on all of files in my collection.
I'm already in the process of building a HTPC so I can run Aeon better...it just sucks that the momentum the skin seemed to have before seems to have come to a screeching halt. I can understand not wanting to show things that aren't even near completion, but throw us a bone here. What can you tell us about the new version? When is there going to be some kind of beta build? This month...year...next spring?
Plus, it's easy enough to make it work on the xbox... ask xbmc.01 to optimize it for u, hahaha... hope all's well DJH... wheres my backdrop? hmmm

I was a big File mode user but after seeing Aeon, i too took on the huge job
of overhauling the files in my 7 TB collection. For the past few weeks i have
been creating .nfo files for over 1300 movies and 260 TV Shows with multiple
seasons each.
All this so i can use Library mode properly in Aeon. I want to make sure that
the scrapers import the information *I* want.
I also built an HTPC but i will buy myself an Aopen MiniPC (http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm) instead...
Anyway... I can't wait to see this new skin... droooool...

Yes, thats cheaper an I thing better.
I'm using a Mac Mini at my 42 Philips LCD. It works perfect with the includes Mac Mini Remote. And it is very quite.

@pletopia & Sidekick
Can you two play every 1080p stuff without judder with you Macmini? I doubt that! With high bit-rate h264/x264 material the C2D in the Macmini is simply too weak.

Name a 1080p high bitrate movie that you don't think will play right on a 2ghz macmini C2D and I'll let you know if it does. I have loads of 1080p movies and all have played flawlessly on my macmini + plex (with just 1gb of ram).

Hehehe... I actually have a Mac Mini for the bedroom connected to a Plasma
Samsung 42inch but i hate Mac OS X with every fiber of my being. It is the
1st model Intel with only 512MB. I hate the Mac Mini Remote. I installed XBMC
on it but i am still using my XBOX all the time.
I will get the Aopen which in my opinion looks better and is way more configurable
hardware wise and put it in the living room on the Pioneer Kuro.
As for running Plex, i know it was based on XBMC but i have been a loyal XBMC
user since the days of XBMP and i won't change anytime soon as i think it is
THE best Media Center software bar none.

Planet Earth 1x01 1080p specifically the bird scene.
Transformers, Spiderwick Chronicles, and many others. It seems the 2ghz C2D Mac Mini I have (bought in Feb, so I think it's the latest) can only play to about 20-25mbit before it starts stuttering, while blu-ray spec is 40mbit.
All in all, for the least hassle it's a great solution, but I think I will be upgrading within 3 years.

But seriously just the one screen we see is freakin' awesome. I too am using
AEON on an Xbox mostly but once i am done with filling the library, i will move
it to an HTPC.
BTW: for those that are having problems running it on their Xbox, make sure you
use it in 720p mode and not 1080i. 1080i takes too much memory and will just
crash your box. The only skins that work well in 1080i are the ones without fanart
support.

I've posted some more info and screens on the first page. Again, please remember that these are images of a work in progress. There won't be the whole alpha thing this time, just two releases: Beta and Final. Don't ask for dates, though, as we don't have any. Whenever this arrives, Aeon will basically be finished.
Oh, and it's not "con't" - it's "caant". Though that tends to have a slightly different meaning around here.

neal...I suspect that Duncan would agree with me, that he is really designing Aeon (stark) with the HD community in mind. This is why you have not seen a 4x3 version already, and the inception of 1080 background content.
There is a difference between "cloak and dagger stuff" and not showing something that doesn't exist or isn't finished. Necessity doesn't come into it.

Dont forget where this whole thing got its start. It is "Xbox Media Center". It doesnt just happen to support the seven year old xbox.. It was made for Xbox.
actually iirc XBMC doesn't stand for anything anymore, not officially anyway. And really, it's time to let go, the Xbox has done all it can do and deliberately hobbling skins and other features to support it wont change that.

i have to agree with Freddo .. I'm an old timer .. I even used xbmp before xbmc existed .. but the xbox is reaching its eol .. time to move on .. for not too much you can put together a fairly powerful htpc .. and deliberately limiting skins and such just to make them "100% xbox compatible" is not fair to other users
keeping the program, that is xbmc, compatible and and add-on, like 'Stark', is not the same thing and is not fair to other users of the software
Exactly. Computing started with Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine - but I don't expect that to run Ninja Gaiden II.
Really? Arsesocks - I'll have to take it back to game then.

Exactly. Computing started with Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine - but I don't expect that to run Ninja Gaiden II.
Come on now...comparing the Xbox1 to a hand-cranked difference engine? That's a bit of a far cry, especially when we're just talking about skins here.
You guys make it sound like it's bending over backwards to achieve X1 compatibility. Hell, I tested the "leaked" version of Stark on my box just for craps and smiles, and it seemed to be more responsive than the current version of Aeon.
Regardless...it's your skin, and it'd be asinine for us to tell you what to make it into. I just don't see what the big damned deal is with making it x1 compatible. Tell ya what...just leave the textures unlocked, and we'll do the rest...
actually iirc XBMC doesn't stand for anything anymore, not officially anyway. And really, it's time to let go, the Xbox has done all it can do and deliberately hobbling skins and other features to support it wont change that.
Hobbling? Hardly..
I guarantee you the majority of xbmc users are using xbox. I have a linux htpc running xbmc on my HD setup in one end of the house.. However I still like to have my modded xbox running xbmc in another part of the house on my old hdtv for everyone to use. It plays all my movies, music etc just fine. I have all my skins set at 720p and everything is fine. I dont see what the big deal is with you people saying its time to let go.. Why? I like it, it works, its small and compact compared to my htpc, etc etc.. I'm sure I"m not the only one who feels this way.
And how many years should we carry the Xbox 1 compatibility with us? In my opinion the XBMC for the Xbox 1 has enough good skins. Today the Xbox 1 is to weak to handle the HD-age. The hardware is too weak and too loud. I have my Xbox 1 nearly since 6 Years now and even at that time the only reason for the Xbox 1 was the multimedia abilities.
Today a HTPC is in all points the better alternative. It has the power to handle HD-stuff and it's absolutly silent. So why in the world support a weak system (= Xbox 1) which lifecycle will end so or so in some years (months)? Instead of wasting man power in supporting old fashion stuff it is better to use the free time to develope new fantastic stuff like the "Stark"-Skin for HTPCs.

I guarantee you the majority of xbmc users are using xbox.
I agree with you 100%. I have 2 Xbox1's, a 360, and a HTPC. While the 360 can stream video, the types of files it can stream is way to limited, the execution is slow and flawed.
I still use my old xbox's with XBMC just about every day and they work great for almost every thing I play. True it is limited by its power, I couldn't get a few Hd videos to run properly until i down sampled them.
But I'm not going to toss it in the trash just b/c its not the newest toy on the market, and i really hope other people don't abandon it b/c of that.
Don't get me wrong media boxes are great, but you guys are talking like the old xbox's are atari 2600's.
Also
HTPC = $450 - $600 or more :eek:
Xbox = $60 at game stop... hmmmm....

Personally, I don't think that the lifecycle of the Xbox is done and over with. MS themselves said that the only reason they stopped development when they did is because the cost of selling it with the hard drive was too great, and their best money-saver would be to dump it and move onto the 360.
I think that in some way, shape, or form, support for the X1 should be continued until people stop using the xbox. And for me, half the joy of using XBMC is the fact that, yes, I'm doing it on a six-year old piece of hardware.
And, again, HD isn't the end-all choice for every person who has a use for XBMC. 90% of my content is SD, and I'm just happy with that. If I have a slightly trimmed-down skin, I can run it in HD and be totally cool with my setup.
But...we're hijacking this thread. The HTPC vs. XBox debate is something that will go on and on and on. I don't want to draw away from Aeon Stark anymore...

Yes, you can pick up an xbox for 10 pounds now, but you won't get far with the original hard disk + you need the remote.
But in the end what it comes down to is HD v SD, if you have an SD TV then you are fine with an xbox, people will fix these aeon skins to work with the xbox, it's just not the developers main concern.

It's time to let the old xbox die in peace ;)
I woulden't count on to much support for it in the future. It's true as it is said. You can easy build a cheap htcp box and it's also much more flexible.

the xbox was great. It still is great for sd content but February 17, 2009 is the end for sd as far as
I am concerned. Lets move forward with the rest of the world. Support the xbox1 thats fine I still use mine but lets shift the focus. htpc is the future. I don't think any one will deny that.
I just checked 4 HRHD-movies and they look awesome on my XBOX. I have no clue why all those HRHD's are encoded with H264. These Mpeg-4 movies are only 2 GB and look much, much better than DVD... even DVD9
The XBOX always had better quality than other video equipment (I'm now talking about the DA-conversion). I can understand that HD is a major leap for the people in the US, but in Europe we always had PAL.
1280 x 720 is VERY good quality. The XBOX can do it and I don't have to buy anything. It would be a shame to just cut us off from future development....

fact is that many of the devs still use Xbox for their XBMC, so don't think they will stop merging back relevant stuff into the Xbox branch
Yes the Xbox does HD pretty good, however it's a hassle to have to reencode stuff you download. However it's still a pretty big leap up to x264 1080p encodes even on my own 1366x768p plasma. The color is so much better over HDMI from the x264 than the component divx/xvid encodes plus the image is ofcourse alittle sharper also. But true, Xbox does not do a bad job if encodes are made right.

Back on topic... BTW this looks great!
WOW. looks like i will be making my way back to aeon from mediastream
WOW. looks like i will be making my way back to aeon from mediastream
Looks like I might be too.
Truth be told, the Aeon home screen always looked way better than the MediaStream one. I always had an issue with the TV and Movie views though. The available movie views in the current version barely show the fanart and the performance is really bad on my Mac Mini (while MediaStream is really smooth). Same goes for the TV view really.
I haven't really seen a TV mock up here, and just the movie screen from the other thread, which looks really promising, as it seemed to focus mainly on the poster art and the fanart and it looked really slick. Here's to hoping the new Aeon has a larger focus on fanart in all views. (Cause really, it's the fanart that makes a good skin look great, that's why the main screen looks so amazing when you have great fan art).
I might have missed it being mentioned on one of the other pages, but is there any time frame for a release on the new version? Days, weeks, months? Just curious as I can't wait to try it out:laugh:

any more "screens"?
The available movie views in the current version barely show the fanart
I'm not sure that applies to all the views, but you'll be pleased to know the balance of fanart and information is our foremost concern with this new one. Well, one of them.
I haven't really seen a TV mock up here, and just the movie screen from the other thread, which looks really promising, as it seemed to focus mainly on the poster art and the fanart and it looked really slick.
It won't look much like that one but, again, the strengths you mentioned are important.
...is there any time frame for a release on the new version? Days, weeks, months?
There is no time frame. To come up with one would be pointless given that we both have quite unpredictable jobs. The best we can do is provide info and screenshots as and when they're available, which is hopefully what we're doing.
I'm not sure that applies to all the views, but you'll be pleased to know the balance of fanart and information is our foremost concern with this new one. Well, one of them.
True, one (from what I remember) of the views shows off the fanart nicely, but for some reason it has horrible performance on my system so it's not really usable for me. Might have missed some settings, though, I suppose. But for instance the "wall" view where there's a wall of posters, it's *extremely* slow for me. You can barely even scroll through it. And that's on a Mac Mini, is this normal? Maybe I'm doing something wrong... ??? :oo:
It won't look much like that one but, again, the strengths you mentioned are important.
I'm glad you're acknowledging the importance (or rather, awesomeness) of fan art. Far too many skins obstruct it almost or completely with lots of information boxes. I suppose to many it's preferable as it's arguably more functional, but personally I find the aesthetics just as important. For instance when you have friends over and you're deciding to watch a movie, scrolling through a ton of movies is a lot more fun with gorgeous fan art, it can give you a feel for the style and tone of the movie very effectively, as well.
Either way, I'm really excited to see how this is going to turn out. I'm sure it'll be stunning. You guys do seem to focus on the fanart, at least judging from the main menu which is basically built completely around showing off gorgeous fan art. (At least, that's the feeling I get from it. That's not to say the other elements don't look fantastically executed as well, though )
There is no time frame. To come up with one would be pointless given that we both have quite unpredictable jobs. The best we can do is provide info and screenshots as and when they're available, which is hopefully what we're doing.
That's cool, I imagine it takes a LOT of time and effort to get it to all work properly. Either way we'll be here waiting (im)patiently for more tidbits and an eventual release...:;):

The CD Frame in Stark is also perfect.
It gives the solid texture to the CD and thus the word "collection". Void of jewel case, it is classic, slick, and elegant.
I really hope Stark could get rid all forms of jewel case.

Without trying to sound too demanding, and while understanding that you have other priorities, I thought I'd risk asking one question.
Is it at all possible to include two more home shortcut options, like you did previously with Clips and Adult? I ask this because I actually changed these around to show Documentaries and Foreign Films next to Movies and TV Shows... I offered this for download and its had 200 downloads so far... I'm sure it would be a useful option.
It the extra shortcuts would only need to link to a specifiable folder and display in list view (so no need for extra/new textures or anything, can be replicated)... and it could able to be toggled on or off, and maybe off by default.
Just a thought, on these forums and others, a lot of people have edited their skins to show Documentaries and the like on their home screens.
Cheers

Cannot wait for this DJH. As always your work looks superb. I am currently using Mediastream because it is such a well done and complete skin. However I can't wait for this because I've always had more of a liking for your vision.
I personally don't use the scrollbar at all, but I definitely feel that your implementation of it will be the best, I see the little groove you are using for it. I only hope someone will be kind enough to provide multi colored themes in the future... Basically just the option for a change in the highlighting color would do wonders. Red, Blue, Green I figure are the big ones.
Oh and I just noticed that maybe the reflection on the left side of your screen shot should be on the "outside" of those cd covers? I know that was just a preliminary screen anyways, but just something I noticed.
I tho xbmc render with anti-alias. screenshot dont look like its with any anti-alias.
i'm in love again... awesome work... this would make me switch from mediastream again!!!! :)
I tho xbmc render with anti-alias. screenshot dont look like its with any anti-alias.
I suspect it's the transparent frames that aren't being anti-aliased. Something to do with edge AA, maybe. Perhaps someone in the know can elaborate.
Wow, these are looking great, glad to hear that your back!
I haven't been able to completely eliminate the aliased edges, but by introducing a variant frame I can at least tone down the effect.

Wow beautiful work.
One question. When you do release final, will you release it under the gpl? I have a feeling this will replace project mayhem if it is.
I don't see why it couldn't be GPL - all it would take is someone swapping the fonts for decent substitutes. Emphasis on the word "decent" there, of course.
As for replacing PM, don't count on it, even if the great men of Team XBMC should ask. Working separately from XBMC allows certain luxuries that I wouldn't want to surrender, especially when it comes to being HDTV-exclusive, etc. The new Aeon's going to be much more in line with XBMC's feature set - it's already ditched the whole bookmark-driven menu thing - but I appreciate the right to deviate.
@Hitcher: So is that NXE avatar a realistic portrayal or the idealised version? I've seen plenty of both on my friends list.
As close to the real me as is possible with the limited set of tools.
Oh, it's knocked a few years off me.:;):
I've been browsing around these forums for a short while now, but this thread made me register.
This skin looks absolutely wonderful. I've tried Aeon before but can't really get used to the horizontal navigation on Home. I might just need to start adjusting, though. :)
Anyway, you were talking about fonts. I see Mediastream uses the same fonts you have in your screenshot. What AltDefaultCaps, I think. What's the problem with that font, regarding the license? Appearantly you can distribute it or the Mediastream devs devs are making a mistake.
I made a quick image which shows the Y2K Neophyte (found it on one of the many free font sites) and Andale Sans (which comes with my openSUSE installation). Y2K Neophyte looks best of those 2 (Andale Sans really doesn't cut it, but thought I'd give it a shot), though it's probably not released under the GPL. :/ So... actually... I'm of no help at all.
Fantastic looking skin, though! Really looking forward to this.
Yeah, the font in question happens to be one of the most prolific in the print media industry. Were there a good free alternative, you'd think everyone would use it.
skin looks awesome. one comment/suggestion i had was if there is any plan to hide the top setup area of the skin until invoked by user? sort of the way mediastream does its setup, with a separate window pain that opens up on the left to change view for movies, music, lirary mode, file mode, etc. keeps the movie and music library section very very clean and usable.
i love the aeon skin but one thing that continuously used to confuse me was scrolling throguh the options one by one (rather than having a list provided with media preview like in mediastream) or jumping up to the setup bar accidentally. i'm sure there is a certain philosophy behind your skin as to how you make it look and this setup bar at the top might be one of the main ones as it appears on both skins, in my opinion it would also work if it was hidden away until i want to bring it up.

I notice you have an "(HD)" marking next to the title...I've been dying for this feature...are you doing something to dynamically detect HD content? (String in filename, etc..) and if so, can't we search for HD only films? That would be great. Glad to see the skin in progress and coming along so beautifully.

Sadly not. It's just the filenames. I'd also advise against doing something similar as it screws up IMDb scraping.

Best thing to do is use something like XBMC Media Companion to create nfo files and then change the title of the film in the nfo.

I don't think adding it to the filename is all that bad...all my HD files have a 1080p or 720p at the end of them and I don't think I've had too many problems searching through IMDB. Seems like a reasonable short-term solution for us with no current way of separating HD content.

...wow...
What I've been wondering: you see all these people who are so incredibly impressed by what you're showing (including me), how do you look at it yourself? Are you your worst critic or are you on a roll and happy you're able to put out all this beautiful work?
And something else I was wondering. Not a request, just wondering if anything like that is even possible. Take for example the coverflow shot (The Departed showing at the front). Is it possible to have the covers look like boxes? Not DVD boxes, but boxes that same shape as your covers. 'Blocks' would be a better word, maybe. Or a 'thick' version of the cover. They would have to scale correctly. Would add to the 3D look, I think. Someone feel like modding this skin already?
May as well post this as well. It's for people who don't want a delayed switch to the info box but would rather push up, make a little button appear and click it. Then you move in any direction to switch back from the info box to the browser.

Funny, its the same what I think when I see all these HD-Skins (espacially Aeon). But, if I had a HD TV I need a HTPC too to play HD Content and so on, its just to expensive for me...
I like Aeon and I don't know if its planned like this right now, but in Aeon "Stark" I don't really like the Main Menu. The Font etc. I think older version had nicer appendages.
BUT!, In fact, djh is the one who brought so much claim to skins. One year ago, I thought PMIII is the best interface I ever saw.

Not sure if this has been answered before or if this is even the right place to ask. But will updated comprehensive backdrop packs be included, or provided when there is release?
Weather option on the Home page. Background checks the date and changes to match the season (not very often, in other words). I had to switch a couple to show you as screens. The finished version will use an overlay (raindrops, snowflakes, god rays, etc.) to augment the weather in each backdrop to match that of your location. Just a little novelty, really.

I know...you introduce another new feature right away I've gotta ask if it can do more. Figured I'd just save somebody else the trouble. :D
Either way...that is pretty raw. Did you do the art yourself for the weather BG?
Nah, I just stumbled across the artwork on some free wallpaper site. I tried tracking down the artist but have no idea who they are. And yes, the backdrops are still user-definable. Not for each season, though - at least not at first.

So...the art changes quarterly depending on the season, and then there are other overlay graphics that denote the weather conditions?
Just a suggestion...if you're going through enough trouble to make the weather this feature-rich...maybe add an option somewhere to let the homescreen switch to weather if left sit for x amount of time or something? Or at least have it start up with weather selected...
Sorry, just thinking aloud. :D
Very very cool...again, so happy to see this badboy off and running again...

That's really all that comes to mind. I absolutely love AEON even though I can't really use it because I'm on a pittly Apple TV. I'm actually getting a Mac Mini just so I can use AEON LOL... sounds a bit much I know but now that my eyes have been opened to XBMC I want to use it for all my media.... Never again will I have to buy stacks of DVD's to burn for all my content. I think this skin is geared to quickly become the de` facto skin for XBMC... AMAZING WORK!!!!
Please oh Please let us play with it before or around Christmas!?!?! That would be a great Christmas present from you to us. hehe
can't wait to see this theme on screen. PM3 looks great, but after years on XBOX1 and now on my HTPC I need a CHANGE!! Yes we can (hopefully soon)!!

Allright...I'm ready for ya now. Just spent the past 8 hours custom-building a HTPC. 2.7ghz, Radeon 9000 DVI card, a gig of memory, HD-audio card...all crammed into an oldskool HP box. The new Mobo was so big I had to cut out the chassis for the CD-ROM.
But, it was worth it. Now I can try Stark in full HD-glory whenever it finally arrives. :D
Maybe in time for Christmas??

this looks beautiful. keep up the good work.
Looks lovely. Any chance of a release before the end of the year?
I strongly doubt it, to be honest, much as I'd like to. While things are moving apace I refuse to actually rush anything, or release something that's unfinished. The original Aeon was the prototype so that could go out whenever; this is a different deal.
Most of the major features and views are there now but there are some glaring omissions and plenty of glitches. Lemme think... there's the file manager, the OSD menus (though the OSD is done), the episode views, a few remaining dialogs and - erk - the on-screen keyboard. And I have a mountain of work looming between now and Christmas.
So rest assured that it won't be long after Christmas, but the chances of it making the 25th are remote. You might actually have to watch Christmas TV instead - sorry about that.
EDIT: Just realised you said the end of the year. I'd say you're in the right ballpark there.
Really looking forward, and more people with me.
The new Aeon will be for a long time @ my HTPC i guess :)
But indeed, don`t rush anything .. better have an bug/glitch free end-version,
than an early build full of glitches etc.
Great work so far!

Don't bank on that, though. I was really thinking out loud when I mentioned it. I dare say that there are dozens of tiny things that need sorting out that'll only come to light when it's "almost done". So we'll see. It's definitely coming sooner rather than later, though.

Let's just say I liked it more the second time but not the third, if that makes any sense. That South African lass is awesome in it, though strangely unremarkable out of costume. If you want to see a *good* Neil Marshall movie, see The Descent. One of the best horrors of the last thirty years, I swear.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop with the screenshots. I really appreciate it.
Well, just bear in mind these are coming off the computer whenever the opportunity presents itself, so if a feature or object appears to be missing, that doesn't mean it's been overlooked.
May as well post this as well. It's for people who don't want a delayed switch to the info box but would rather push up, make a little button appear and click it. Then you move in any direction to switch back from the info box to the browser.
Image: http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeon2_showcase_info.jpg (http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/aeon2_showcase_info.jpg)
I'm definitely a fan of this, having to wait for the info/fanart to appear in showcase view has been my only real annoyance with Aeon so far. That said, it seems like pushing up to make a button appear, and then clicking the button is a bit more than necessary. Why not just push up to go straight to the info?

@DJH: For what it's worth Djh, I agree with this above quote... If people want to push up to make info appear, they probably want to do it faster than the delay would normally be. Therefore they probably don't want a confirmation button. This option (w/o any confirmation button) is pretty much what is available in the Mediastream Mod by Minimalko. His stream views with this option are nice this way.
I agree as well, with that. But then how would you get to the 'menu' (where you can select the view type and all), since that's usually pressing 'up' with this type of view. Or would that be pushing down instead of up, instead? I'm imagining in the current situation it's up once for the button and up again to go to the menu.

Because you'd have to summon the info box every time you wanted the menu. Also, I had enough people complaining that they accidentally nudged up while browsing the old Aeon menu; imagine what it'd be like if half the view kept vanishing. Nah, this method works well enough for me - and you can always switch to the timed version.
EDIT: And yes, the previous poster imagines correctly.
Actually, despite what I said originally, this isn't really there to lessen the wait for the info. It's there for people who want to just browse and leave the icons there without it switching to the info box.

fair enough... we can always edit the time to be cut in half anyways. Can't wait for the skin! I'm dying to make a switch from Mediastream, which is great because it is so 'complete' but it's never been my "style" so to speak. cannot wait.
Anyone who *still* wants more screens could do a lot worse than head to the (almost) refurbished (two page) Aeon website.
Nice site update. The on-screen controls look great!

Me too.
Lots of activity going on now in this topic. Lots of excited people. :)
And yes, nice job on the site. :)
Not to be rude or anything, but will this skin ever be released then?
Aeon doesn't have the best track record when it comes to appear as a downloadable product.
And when/if it does surface, will it be constantly supported in the future, or will it eventually die off when the designers gets bored after some months, like the history of so many other skins?

You haven't really read through the thead, have you? :) He hopes te release it somewhere between Christmas and New Year's. Also, he wants the release to be as bug free as possible so it won't really need maintenance and the modders can go have a party with it.

I'll be attempting the bottom-right one at some point post-release. It's coding suicide as you can probably tell, and doesn't really fit with the Aeon theme. Still, it'll be interesting to see if it works. As for the other one, it never even made it to a prototype stage and probably never will. You're basically looking at Fluid in those screens.

Kickass. Yes, I would wager that to make a display like that work would be quite a trick, especially given all the ins and outs of XBMC. Regardless, glad to see you're keeping it. That will be the next development that everybody else will copy. ;)
Overall...I LOVE the minimalistic approach you're taking. (Hence the name *stark*?) The fact that the entire thing is becoming more and more backdrop-centric is freaking sweet. I've put a lot of time into fleshing out my video library to include only the best gfx as far as backdrops and coverart, and I just know that this is going to take the most advantage of that work.
So, yeah. Awesome. Incredibly so. Let me know when I can take it for a test-drive. :D

That image is very similar to a concept that Emilio proposed (if not exactly the same one) during the development of MediaStream. I'm pretty sure that we had a version of it up and running at one point but it never made the final cut when we tried to make sure that all the views and screens were consistent.
I agree that it doesn't quite fit in with the other views that you have been posting screenshots for but I guess if you played about with it you could make it fit.

Is it possible to get the source files for it? at all
also if you are making the pictures load in background in my pics(I have done this on my own skin) the best way I found this
animation effect="fade" time="300" delay="1000" Visible animation
visible System.IdleTime(1) visible
this stopped it pausing when moving with the idle time and also allowd the image to load before it was displayed (delay=1000)
It saved me having the low res version which I dont like at all

I didn't look through the entire thread, but I didn't see this question on the first 4 pages or so.
Will this skin work for 720p or just 1080? (and by work, I mean work I mean designed for 720p, and have readable fonts etc)
It actually works better in 720p simply because it's coded in 720p. So while the textures are fit for 1080p and display as such, XBMC does some nasty guesswork when it comes to dimensions. Maybe that doesn't apply at 1080p, but it certainly mucks a few things up in 1366x768. I'll be recommending people use 720p or 1080p and nothing in between.

I've just installed the Aeon alpha and indeed there seem to be some glitches but even with those I am mighty impressed - I've been using media centers for years now but this is off the scale (for the Top Gear fans: I'd say this one goes into sub-zero right next to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage :D).
Even though everyone is hawking on a preview of the next version I thought I read that no beta's are released, only a semi-final skin. Is this correct? (And if so, bummer ;))
