View Full Version : Files disappeared in a folder .... but are still "on the HDD"

Here's a quick Q:

I was adding more "files" to a certain folder via program that runs on the xbox. When I rebooted all my files in "programs" where gone, except an empty subfolder.

here's the Odd thing: The HDD still reports that the data is still present, but It will not list in the file manager.

I would like to recover/restore the data if at all possible, but I am stuck.... any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like you could have upgraded your hard drive at some point and not partitioned correctly. Could this be correct?

Do a search for xbpartitioner (32kb clusters is the important bit)

I did do the upgrade to a 500 gb. I had xbhdmaker do the partitions and has aparently been running correctly.

I know the drive was partitioned to 32k clusters, because I was just under the 512 GB (i believe is the size) maximum.

Any way to see if the HDmkr did it incorrectly?

Search for "xbpartitioner" for even more threads.

I've never heard of HDmkr, and i've not really been keeping up with Xbox.

But for a long time xbpartitioner was the only xbox app capable of making 32kb clusters, and i thought this was still the case.

I think xbpartitioner will tell you your cluster sizes.

And gamesters link tells you all you need to know.

He was talking about xboxhdm, if I'm interpreting correctly.

Phrasz, that won't work.

You can partition in xboxhdm, but you MUST format using xboxpartitioner (look for version 1.1 in the usual places).

If you have xboxhdm do the work, it will appear to do it correctly, and 500GB will show up, but your files will disappear as you add more to the drive.

You must reformat with xboxpartitioner.

Ironically, the disks were neither above 256gb nor were they 16k clusters.

My drives were 32kb clusters with niether above the 256 gb max. (one at 127 ... which is fine .... and the other around 230 gb).

Anyone familar to the file structure/limitations to how many folders can be placed in the same location? Perhaps then the pointers are just jacked.

I found this.

FAT-X has a 4 GB file-size limitation, and only supports file/folder-names up to 42 characters, a maximum of 255 in total file-structure character-depth and a maximum number of 4096 files/folders in a single subfolder, plus in the root of each partition, the maximum number of files/folders is 256.
FAT does not support all ASCII characters in file/folder names (like for example < > = ? : ; " * + , / \|¤ &). XBMC will automatically rename any files/folders you transfer to the Xbox by these limitations.
None of these are XBMC issues that can be fixed as the limitation is in the Xbox itself.

Workaround: Store your files/folders on your computer or a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device/box which support SMB/CIFS, FTP or UPnP and share them over a local-area-network instead.

Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Media_Center#Xbox-specific_limitations)

If none of your partitions are over not 256GB, not sure what the problem is, but it seems odd that they are 32kb, but you didn't specifically format as such.

Also it seems odd that you have a 500GB HDD and F+G space of only 357GB?

Fat-X is a messy nightmare, ugh!

Yah I wasn't sure so I scrapped it, did the xbpartioner to 32k clusters, and set all the space on F. I am going to attempt restoring my data, but I'll see how that goes. It really bites that I lost 150 gb + of "files". However, at least I didnt lose my pics ... my wife woulda killed me.

If you're using an exploit (aka softmod) and it happens to be UXE then try the other version of NKpatcher.

For F taking rest of drive you want nkpatcher06, for F up to 137gb then G gets the rest, you want nkpatcher67.

Just in case you missed that...

If you're using a mod chip, disregard this.
