Hi guys,

So I've searched the forums, I've searched standard networking forums and tutorials and I still can't get my new xbmx onto my wireless network, so some help would be very much appreciated..

I've tried to let everything do it automatically via DHCP and that didn't work. Then I tried to assign IP addresses, gateways, etc manually, and that hasn't worked either.

Here's my set-up:

Netgear DG834G v3 modem/router -
IP address 192.168.0.1
DNS (from ISP) 203.0.178.191

My laptop
Gave it IP 192.168.0.4 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1

Xbox
Gave it 192.168.0.6
255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
Left DNS blank

Dlink DGL-3420 Adapter
Comes as 192.168.0.30
I've entered all my wireless network settings (SSID and password) correctly, I've tried the wizard, the works.

I've turned DHCP off on everything, I've tried it on with everything. If I hardwire the xbox into the Netgear router (with DHCP on) it works perfectly.

So guys, any help would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,
Ben

To be safe you should set the Xbox's DNS to 192.168.0.1 (your router). I wouldnt hurt. Also, I would try turning off your WEP or any kind of security on your router to test that first, just to make sure your xbox can connect.

Also, i have a wireless adapter, it was a bitch to set up.

Mine is a plexus, but there was a security encryption option which i had to change to match my PC setup (WPA-PSK in my case, or something) and had to enter the password obviously.

So yeah disable security to eliminate all that type of stuff (but re-enable once it's working, for security)

Have you been able to plug it into your PC and get it to connect?

First of all switch off your Xbox and setup your wireless adapter to connect with your router, DHCP should be on on your Router.
Check the LAN settings and range of IP addresses sometimes they are set to only allow one or two connections.

Turn off any security to get the wireless adapter to talk to the router (check the attached devices, or similar to see if it connects) then turn it back on once it is connected.

I had a problem with my Buffalo wireles adapter connecting to a local WiFi and getting an IP address auto matically, I had to remove the antenna and connect via the LAN cable to set it all up.

Once you've got the wireless adapter working then connect your Xbox and set the Xbox to DHCP in the network settings, this will allow it to ask for an IP address from the router.

Once it's all working you can reserve the IP address in the router and fix it in the Xbox.

Hope this helps.

And also while setting up, have the wireless adapter as close as you can to the router, to eliminate the possibility of signal loss.

Ok, the adapter talks happily to the router, had to leave DHCP off on it, otherwise it doesn't talk to the router?

So now the router/modem is DHCP on, the adapter is off, with IP 192.168.0.30 / 255.255.255.0 and I've added the gateway of 192.168.0.1. Plugged it into the xbox, and tried the xbox with DHCP on, or manual with the settings in my first post.

Now if it's DHCP on it says it can't connect to server. If I change the settings and reboot it doesn't give me any warning, but I still can't connect (well I assume I can't as I don't get news/weather or can I download scripts.

Any ideas? Is there any reason a D-Link adaptor wouldn't talk to a Netgear router?

One more thought, I've noticed on the router settings I can enable wireless bridging and repeating - it's off now, should it be on?

Okay, now I'm really stuck. I'm back trying to connect the D-link adapter, and I've started from the start, I've gone back to WEP and everything seems to talk, until I connect the xmbc to the adaptor. Then nothing.

So I went a step back further and hardwired the xbmc into the netgear modem/router. But now not even that connects???

Is there a way to 'restore' the xbmc to the original settings because it worked back then hardwired?

Use the bridging mode on your adapter.
