Hello to all XBMC users,

There is a product made by some Netherlands company that claims to provide ambilight effect on PC.

some description found here:http://www.ambilight4pc.com/ambient-reality-effects/ambient-reality-effects.html

Now I know that this is allready possible for XBOX users using SmartXX Modchip. My question is would this particular product work in XBMC for Windows enviroment? It is stated on the link provided above, that video playback needs additional settings of the video player.

Any help appreciated.

I haven't tried it yet (though I'm kind of curious too now) but at a guess I'd say since they support most games, and that they suggest you set VLC to output in openGL mode to make it work, XBMC might just work right out of the box, since it also uses openGL to render. Of course thats a total guess. Neat gizmo though, wish it was a little cheaper.

Exactly what I thought, which of course doesnt mean much as I am no developer, nor hardware guy:oo:

I really dont like bumping my own thread. But just in case any developer reads this I would be really happy to hear an experts opinion on this before i order the product.

Thanks in advance

so then the obvious question is...how does it look? Do you like it? Would you recommend it?

After looking at a TV with ambilight I'm secretly wanting something like it but I just recently bought a new TV that I'm perfectly happy with so buying one with Ambilight isn't really an option.

Looked through various do-it-yourself solutions with led bars etc but the one I have my eye on is the AmbX solution from Philips, so I was wondering have anyone used this with XBMC and if so how does it work?

It'd be pointless to buy if it didn't work with XBMC since I'll exclusively use it for that purpose.

Yes it'll work, as far as I saw on other forums.
It'll work in every 3D application, and most media-software which support DirectShow. Mediaportal, Vista Mediacenter, it's all compatible.
But you need to set it up first and download the newest software, otherwise it'll look very weird when using it.

XBMC doesn't make use of DirectShow it uses only OpenGL.

Well then it'll work fine, since it is a 3D application in essential. So it will work out of the box.

Hi,

i know there is a Ambilight Mod possible for XBMC on XBOX with SmartXX Chip.

Here are the Links of a Video and the Phyton Script.

Phyton Script for XBox with XBMC and SmartXX Modchip:
Ambient Light Control Pad (http://xbmc-scripting.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/Ambient%20Light%20Control%20Pad/)

and here a Video of it in Action:
Ambilight Phyton Script XBOX with SmartXX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bcQMaBVQtI&fmt=18)

there is also a project for the Dreambox TV-Receiver and a VDR Plugin.
But i found nothing for my lovely AppleTV. Is there a way to do that with the AppleTV?

Maybe anyone did that before...

thx

Has there been any news on Ambx for XBMC? i read that a ambx user found it compatible but couldnt enable it as a program.

Well definitely not as good as the original ambilight as A.R.E. displays color based on average color on screen. Sometimes I wonder why it goes red when in fact there is nothing red on screen..Considering the price it still is worth it in my opinion

I got my kit yesterday and it's working! it's a little weird getting the software on the website since its already outdated. So after install you need to update from the software itself to get XBMC support.

It's really great btw!
