View Full Version : Blank screen after stopping video
I've been having a strange problem with video playback for the past few weeks. If I play back a video (either movie or TV) and stop the video midway through playback, I get sent back to the XBMC movie or TV library screen, but everything is solid white. I can't see a background, graphics, or any of the text on the screen. Pretty much just solid white. The only way to get out of the white screen is to either kill the xbmc process or replay the video. Replaying the video actually takes you back to the video, which displays properly.
If I instead let the video play all the way through and exit on its own, I'm taken back to the library screen where everything displays just fine. No white screen.
I'm not sure I can trace things back to where it got broken for me (it wasn't always like this), but there have been so many other fixes in the past month or so that going back isn't an option. I'm just wondering if anyone else is seeing the same issue?
I'm currently running the 14725-hardy ppa (i386), but I have tried various ppas over the past weeks and have even built myself from scratch from svn -- regardless, I see the same issue. I am using a GeForce FX 5500 video card and have tested with various skins -- not skin-dependent.
Anyone seeing a similar problem or have any idea for how to go about debugging?
Thanks! -Dave

Exact same problem I have .. posted in here
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35648 .. no response though :( .. I was wondering too if this is something general since my friend has an ATI-card which is doing almost the same thing..
Thanks for posting the debug log onesojourner. FWIW, I'm also using Ubuntu 8.04, up-to-date as of 8/11/08.
Could you please download Atlantis alpha 3? We're only supporting official releases during the feature freeze.

malloc .. I downloaded the Atlantis ppa and I am still having the same problem on my box :| .. I can try to compile the svn but dont think it will help .. Will post a log tomorrow if I can get the time :)
Since others are seeing the same problem, you should probably submit a bug report to our trac. Please use the official binary Atlantis release (not your own personal build from SVN) and be sure to include ALL of the information we ask for in http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34655.

Hey guys. I have an issue that is similar and may or may not be related to this. When I hit x to stop a movie everything freezes. I don't get a white screen but the image of the movie stays on the screen and I have to kill xbmc from the command line to get my screen back. If I switch terminals and switch back the screen is black instead of white.
Here is the post about the issue:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35686
ignore the bit about textures as that issue HAS been fixed in svn. I have already posted a bug report on trac. You can find that here:
http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/4508
i am in the process of tracking down exactly which revision this started happening. I know that the last revision I have that works perfectly is 14180 then for a few revisions I was getting horrible compiling errors about aclocal and mismatched versions. I know that somewhere in the 14600ish range xbmc does compile but I get the errors above, ie freezes on killing the video. I will be working backwards throughout the day to try and find out where the error occurred. If you guys think this IS the same issue feel free to add to my trac report or to help me find the revision where the error occurred. If you don't think they are related then I apologize for adding this useless post to your thread ;)
My System:
Gentoo 2007.0
2.6.23.8 i686
NVidia GeForce? 8400
Intel Celeron 3.0ghz
I would like to note I'm unable to reproduce the problem on a mac mini in OS X.

From what I have gleaned from browsing through everyone so far who has reported the problems is that it seems to be linux specific. I am obviously not a developer so I will leave the final judgment to the experts ;) Cheers.

Hello!
I'm experincing similar problems with a white screen, but my xbmc doesn't hang. I can shut it down by pressing 's' and then 'Enter'. I can also just hit 'Enter' to replay the video.
Info:
xbmc version: svn rev 14967 (webserver disabled)
Skin: PM3
OS: Ubuntu 7.10, amd64
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce FX5200
Graphics driver: nvidia proprietary, 169.07
My steps to reproduce problem
1. Start up xbmc
2. Navigate to video folder, in this case a samba mount
3. Start video playback
4. Press 'x' to stop playback.

Success! Looks like my problem has something to do with the webserver. After turning the webserver off xbmc no longer freezes when I stop movies. You guys might want to give that a try to see if that fixes your problem as well. Thanks to Elupus for looking into the problem and TheWoert for the good catch.

Is it fixed in the svn og at the ppa too?.. I was going to "bitch" since I am still having the same problem in the ppa.. but then I remembered that the new ppa probably havent been build yet :)

Hello!
OS: Ubuntu 7.10, amd64
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce FX5200
I now realise that 64-bit is not officially supported and that my graphics card falls below the minimum specs.
I'll try upgrading my graphics card and see if that helps.

Does anyone know what may cause a blank (white) screen after stopping a video. When the video is played completely xbmc returns normally to the menu, but when stopping a video using "x" I get a white screen.
I have:
Ubuntu Hardy
Linux Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic
Xbmc Svn 14921
I am also having this happen..
I am also using 14921
SVN as of this posting is up to 15064, can you update and recheck? What video card and drivers? Going to need bunches more data if this is still a problem methinks....
This looks related to the issue detailed near the end in http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?p=193428.

Not sure if this helps because the issue is probably fixed in the most current release but if anyway is having problems with this, instead of pressing stop on your remote (if using a remote) press the next button. XBMC tries to go to the next movie in your playlist and if there is not one, it sends you back to the list of movies or where ever you were before you started your movie.
I know it sounds a bit hacky but it works great and you should not receive the WSOD.
Let me know if anyone knows what the real fix is for this.

I have this same problem and I already found out about hitting the next button. Does anyone know when or if they will fix this problem?
Same problem here. However it X works if I play mp3 file. Seems like Video Player related.
Also mine doesn't look white. It looks black/gray but application still functional except that you cant see anything. I am running Ubuntu 8.04

probably because they are now merged as one....together...

I am also getting this problem. Exactly as others have described it..
1. Start up xbmc
2. Navigate to video folder, in this case a samba mount
3. Start video playback
4. Press 'x' to stop playback.
Using a fresh install of 8.04.
I first tried alpha 4 and it happened.
So I checked out the latest svn (r15348) and compiled that. Exactly the same problem.
Yes, the workarounds mentioned worked, but they are ugly.
I have a geforce fx 5200, which I've seen a couple of mentions of within this thread. Maybe that is to blame?
The box has a 2.6Ghz Pentium something or other. It's never going to play hd content (my projector doesn't support it). But it should be ample to play some divx's and mp3's (which it does admirably before the white screen).
I'm new to xbmc linux (pretty comfortable with linux), but have used xbmc on the xbox for years. Excellent media player.
If there's anything I can do to help fix this problem, please let me know.
Sho recently made a post in another thread about an xorg.conf setting that fixes a problem with the 5200. The thread has something to do with the Intel G45. Somebody was trying to build a new setup. Consider this an exercise in search. Please reply with the setting and whether or not it helped.

Well, I found this (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36067&highlight=5200&page=4) thread which was an fx5200 related problem suggesting to add Option "TripleBuffer" "true" to xorg.conf to fix a green screen video issue with the card. This did not fix this problem I am having.
I also tried a different fx5200 card and an fx5600 card.
I have a similar spec pc also with an fx5200. same problem :(
It seems all the agp cards I have are from from the fx5* series :S. I have another 8 unopened fx5200! (I work in IT).
On my main pc with a more modern card I don't have this issue.
Has anybody got these cards working correctly with a recent xbmc linux?
I really don''t want to have to upgrade my card due to such an insignificant bug.
I will try to bind the next button to the stop button, as that essentially fixes the problem (need this to be child/wife friendly). But it will always bug me.
I don't know the code at all, but can anyone point me to the places in the code where pressing "stop" leaves video and pressing "next" with no other relating media leaves video and returns to the xbmc menu. Since one works and one doesn't, I will have a go at hacking it myself.

You could always mail one of those extras off to elupus. That's a sure way to get it fixed ;)

The least I can do. Pm me an address to send it to.
Just when I found a satisfactory workaround too...
XBMC.PlayerControl(Next) can to be bound to the stop key in Keymap.xml somewhere between the <FullscreenVideo> tags for a non detectable hack to the problem ;)
You may want to PM elupus instead. He may not be watching this thread. And he may not want to do the work or have the other HW necessary (AGP mobo).

so i was also runing a fx 5200 nvidia graphics card. i just replace it with a 6200 le and the problem is gone. I believe the white screen is only a problem with the 5200 series graphics card.
Hi,just chiming in to say I also get this problem. system is a p4 2.8ghz with ti4200 agp, ubuntu 8.04, 2.6.24 kernel
I tried against revision 15439 and against 15111 (the hardy ppa) with same results.
Same issue here, Geforce fx5600. TrippleBuffer option is a of no help with the Whitescreen.
Also another workaround for the problem is goto home and press stop.
I've submitted a ticket (http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/4815) for it.
Same issue here..
Ubuntu 8.04 Hairy Hardon (or whatever)

strange, there is no edit button next to my post..
just wanted to add nvidia driver version:
$cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version (09-08 07:43)
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module 96.43.05 Tue Jan 22 19:36:58 PST 2008
GCC version: gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)
Another confirmation.
System/Hardware
AMD 64 1.8ghz (dual core)
GeForce FX5500 (AGP)
XBMC SVN:15111
Linux 2.6.24-19-generic
Video Driver
$cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version

Apparently you can't edit posts on this forum. Apologies for the n00b-ness.
The workaround I've used is re-mapping the "stop" key to the videos menu, where stopping the video doesn't give a WSOD. I've also changed the "back" key (same) and use the "Live TV" button on my mceusb remote to toggle fullscreen.
There are two files that need to be changed: Keymap.xml and Lircmap.xml, although the latter is remote-specific and depends on which button you want to use. The real magic happens by opening Keymap.xml and looking for <FullscreenVideo>. Change the <stop> line to:
<stop>XBMC.ActivateWindow(MyVideos)</stop>
problem is also present in alpha3 (well whatever is the tag Atlantis-alpha3-linux-osx-win32 I'm not that familiar with svn sorry), revision 15450
the problem was not present in revision 12538 I think. I say think because I can't run it after upgrading my kernel/libgl, and aborted an svn update so it is somewhere between 12538 and 15436. Also I can't seem to checkout 12538 anymore - not sure if I'm doing it right, I run 'svn co -r 12538
https://xbmc.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/xbmc/branches/linuxport xbmc' but it fails with:
REPORT of '/svnroot/xbmc/!svn/vcc/default': Could not read response body: connection was closed by server (http://xbmc.svn.sourceforge.net)
I've tried retrying but same thing happens.
Not sure why that's failing, but if you check out latest you should be able to do "svn up -r xxxxx"
Another workaround is to press 'Step Forward' button and it will stop the video since it is the end of the playlist. Defaults as PERIOD.

Installed XBMC on Ubuntu 7.10 x86 toady. Latest stable I guess, I enabled the Gutsy PPA repository. I immediately ran into this problem of the screen going white when pressing stop button. I have:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 169.12 Thu Feb 14 17:53:07 PST 2008
GCC version: gcc version 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)
lspci | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV31 [GeForce FX 5600] (rev a1)
...So this is a pending problem with geforce FX5* I see. Well, hope there will be a more permanent workaround in time....

Bug confirmed on an older machine.
I ran XBMC 2.1a2-hardy2 just fine. For a python chrashing bug I decided to upgrade to XBMC 8.10b2-hardy1 a few days ago, and now I have this problem, too.
When I stop a video, everything turns white. But there is no crash, and if you know the navigation on top of your head, you will notice that everything still works. You can navigate to other video's or music, all is well except for vision.
Powering down and restarting XBMC gets rid of the white, BUT pressing backslash (leaving full-screen) before shutting XBMC down will preserve the white disaster during the entire Linux session, requiring a reboot!
I run Xubuntu 8.04 updated to 30-jul-2008 (later updates disable my sound and I wasted too many hours trying to fix it that I decided to put back an image and never update again) on a Pentium 3 800 MHz with a GeForce 2 MX 400.
