Hey guys,
Jut thought I'd drop a note about a bunch more work I've done for meligrove.com (http://www.meligrove.com)
Meligrove is a place to share high definition backdrops for XBMC. Movies and Music are mostly complete, I'll be working in Games and Weather too.
UPDATE: As of September 11, and movie-xml.com going down the search won't be working. I am working on an update that should allow things to move forward independent of any other data sources. The API and images are still working perfectly fine. This only affects the searching.
UPDATE #2: I know it's been quiet on the front of getting the search back up and running... with the demise of movie-xml.com John Conrad (author of the Moving Pictures app), zag2me and I have been talking about a way to not just bring movie-xml.com back online, but bring it back 10x better. So we will.
Since Meligrove will get rolled into this project, and technically speaking the site is still functioning fine as a place to get / post backdrops if everyone can give us about a week to get the initial beta of our new site up, I would much rather dedicate time to this rather than duplicating all of the functionality across 2 apps.
Sound like a plan everyone?
really good site mate... me really likes it a lot... keep up the great work man...
Hey guys,
Jut thought I'd drop a note about a bunch more work I've done for posters.consumeroo.com (http://posters.consumeroo.com/index.rhtml).
Done
- Movies are now searchable
- Movies show details
- Zips will auto-regenerate once a day
To be done:
- User upload-able art
- Maintain some kind of updated list to prevent re-downloads of zip file when only 1 or 2 have been added.
Have fun, if you guys run into any problems feel free to post about them here.

Very nice. The only thing I can suggest is perhaps make it browseable by letter as well. Cheers.
Yes, why not make it browseable by letter, show the last 5 or 10 backdrops and make it compatible with moviebackdrops ? I have uploaded tons of backdrops on moviebackdrops, I won't upload them again!
Thx for you work, looks nice!
travisbell

I will definitely look at doing the browseable y letter but first and foremost I am going to be making those contribute links actually work :-P
I'll also see about a way to elegantly display multiple images should they exist for a single movie.
Cheers guys.

Is this one backdrop per movie, or is there a library of different backdrops per title? The two that I searched up only had one backdrop each.

There are a few movies with multiple posters but I haven't implemented a way to display them yet.
I'll be taking a look at that next, and most likely this week.

Update:
- Multiple posters are now working, see Star Wars: Clone Wars (http://posters.consumeroo.com/movie.rhtml?id=tt1185834) as an example.
- Search results have been fixed to prevent the 500 errors
- There's a new "latest uploads" page. See here (http://posters.consumeroo.com/latest.rhtml).
- Image sizes are reported as the real image dimensions
Have fun guys.
Looks super good actually, awesome work!
Ultimate thing would be some compatibility with moviebackdrops

Nice, although I like www.movieposters.com, it bothers me that I can't upload or download posters at 1920x1080 resolution, I know I can convert the posters that I've made but it seems a waste to make the pictures lower res. Thanks I will up a few posters that I've made when I get home from work.

Playing with the API... can any XML heads out there confirm this would be a decent end point for imdb id's?

Alright guys, the final step before merging with moviebackdrops.com has been completed.
1) New and final domain name. www.meligrove.com (http://www.meligrove.com) All requests to posters.consumeroo.com are being redirected there. This will be the permnent home of my project.
2) Re-factored almost _everything_ to account for the addition of Music backdrops. This section is not complete yet but atleast I can work on it now ;)
3) New uploader properly resizes images and creates thumbnails which will be used for the API once complete.
4) Made a rather useful page of the current top box office movies. This should help entice some of Meligrove's users to contribute to movie-xml.com
5) Added a forum. This is small area, specifically targeted towards poster requests and questions about the project.
6) Fixed the UTF-8 character display issue. Foreign characters now display correctly.
I think that about covers it... have fun!
Cool stuff! The site looks great, thanks a lot for your efforts, it's much appreciated :)

I'm really liking this site. I'll have a few images to upload in a bit.
One request - is it possible to have the search results show whether any images exist? It's a little annoying when I search on a movie, see the results, click on the link only to see the "Movie poster not found" message. For the (dwindling) list of movies that don't have images yet, I'd like to know that right after the search results come up instead of having to click again. Not a big deal for one movie, but it adds up when rechecking the couple dozen movies that I'm still image-less for...

Update:
Music has been "soft launched". What I mean by that is, artists are completely searchable right now but I do not have uploads enabled. Just making sure the caching system and display is working properly for everyone before we go crazy with adding new art.
Here's an example:

Wow! The site looks amazing! I am already getting together music fanart for all my favorite metel, punk, and psychobilly bands for when the music section is done. The only suggestion I have, and I am pretty sure it was mentioned elsewhere, is an easier way to get to the forums. Cheers m8.

One more request. For music I would love to see band logos. The name or band symbol in the bands colors using the bands fonts etc. these images would be saved at a preset size. Perhaps 500x500 and depending on the shape of the logo it would have to fill this space either vertically or horizontally and the rest of the image would be transparent (probably would have to be .png's).
I requested something like this for tvshows at thetvdb.com. Here are a few examples of what the band logos could be used for if we could get them scraped and added to the skinning engine.
As you can see in these screenshots, I have placed the band logo in the top right corner. With the logo there is no need to have artistname. However, if no band logo is available it would be easy to have it default to show text of the artistname.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/th_FloggingMolly-fanartartist.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/FloggingMolly-fanartartist.jpg)
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/th_TigerArmy-fanartartist.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/TigerArmy-fanartartist.jpg)
You can see then that, from a skinning standpoint, manipulating the position/size of the band logo adds a lot of possibilities for the creative skinner to utilize.
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/th_TigerArmy-fanartsongs.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/TigerArmy-fanartsongs.jpg)
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/th_TigerArmy-fanartsongsw.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v458/johnslayer/TigerArmy-fanartsongsw.jpg)
These are just a few examples to illustrate what I am proposing. To actually make it happen we would need support from you and your site and from team xbmc. Anyone interested?

Dumb question, but do I need to download manually all the posters I want? Is there any way to get them within xbmc?

For movies and TV shows, the scraper *should* download posters and fanart automatically. But...because the guys who run moviebackdrops.com merged it with meligrove.com, I'm not sure if the fanart scraper for movies works currently.
Otherwise, yes, the stuff should download automatically in library mode. Select the folder that contains your movies, bring up the context menu, and select "set content". Pick IMDB.com, and tell it to scan automatically.
XBMC should do the rest.

Yup, and if you're that determined to download a pack I'll be putting together a "best of" pack of something like 100 movies backdrops. I have decided to how to poll everyone, maybe I'll run a thread on the forums (http://www.meligrove.com/forums/) for it later this week.
Cheers,

With the source browser either on xbmc.org/trac or on sourceforge.

You probably didn't download them "untouched", and they've been mangled. Try clicking on them and then going to "download in other formats" down the bottom.
Otherwise, you'll have to wait for a new release, which hopefully should be out within the next week.

No, as far as I know music fanart is not supported. However, with the way this site is improving I would not be surprised to see it in the near future. That is why I suggested adding band logos as well. It would seem logical to do it all at the same time.

Will do Gamester ;) Music FanArt seemed inevitable, but now I have to convince travis to host band logos on his site. No sense in adding them to the scraper if they aren't on the site.

I have to convince travis to host band logos on his site. No sense in adding them to the scraper if they aren't on the site.Well you could try to also convince XBMC developer(s) to implement local support, (like a file called "logo.jpg" or something similar stored in the artist and/or album folder), ...local FanArt support was added to XBMC long before a scraper for downloading backdrops online was ever created, (it is kind of a which came first, the chicken or the egg, kind of question). Of course, if there was a site to get them from it would give much more motivation for anyone to add support for it in XBMC.

So, what do you think?
I would have no problem implementing band logos. Wouldn't be terribly hard but my question to you is, is there an existing source for these? Or are they primarily community made like the movie backdrops are?
Rand Al Thor
2008-09-09, 05:20
I would assume that there is probably NOT an existing source for them. However, I think that band logos would be easier to come by than good high quality backgrounds. Every band has a logo, even if it is just the bands name in a special font. The fact that they would not need to be of such high resolution would make them much easier to come by. You would need to come up with some sort of standards though as I discussed earlier. Like dimensions and that the logo MUST fill at least one aspect (either vertical or horizontal). They should be .png's so that the rest of the space can be transparent. They should only be EXISTING logos. No "I think this would be a cool logo for band X." That is all I have for now but there are probably other things to consider. Cheers.

The new site is going to have a lot more features, and moving forward this is something that can easily be added.
I'll probably be announcing the soft launch of the new stuff later today so keep your eyes open. Oh, and before anyone asks, XBMC will still work. We'll be working with the scraper guys to have the new site implemented in the next beta.

Backdrops are going to be moving to themoviedb.org (http://www.themoviedb.org/), we're just not quite done yet.
Searching works there but backdrops are NOT syned 100% to Meligrove yet. That will be done a little later once tmdb is more mature.
I've been poking around on tmdb and I really love the new site, being able to edit abstracts etc is great, basicly like thetvdb.com it's awesome. I take it a scraper is in the works? or at least provisioned for?

Hey Freddo,
Once we have finished the API I am sure we'll get plugged into XBMC. We're just busy bug squashing and first making sure the system is scalable enough to last the test of time. We don't want to invest all this time and have it go down again :D
cool as long as its on the cards then it's worth my time to maintain entries for movies I like. Is there any chance of supporting multiple posters per movie soon? I really want to upload some alternate ones.
travisbell
2008-10-08, 11:45
It's definitely in the cards and like I mentioned, we're building this one to last.
Multiple posters is a tricky thing... It on the list but not for a while. By all means though, if you think the poster you have is better replace it. I don't think anyone will mind, just make sure the postal is an official :D
Yeah I guess, I don't know if its better or just different, it's a matter of opinion really that's the thing. I'll just keep it stored locally for now but when support goes in I can share the wealth
