:nerd:Hi All

Im VERY interested in setting up my old X-Box Crystal with XBMC but im struggling to grasp even the basics.

My plan is to install a 1 Terrabyte HD into the x-Box and have it as my media station.

My problem is this:

Every 'How To' i have found is practically impossible for me to understand.

Is there a very sinlpe step by step guide in how to do it all....or do i have to go away and spend three years learning Linux / Unix commands and scripting etc etc.

Please help.....it;s so frustrating not knowing where to start.

Thanks all

What part exactly are you seeking help for? Is it installing/configuring XBMC, installing the HD?
Make sure you've read the Wiki

You have the Xbox....

You need....

Action replay or similar memory card and reader and a copy of Mechassult, Splinter Cell or 007 Agent under fire... for starters.... cheap as chips these days...

Not sure how much luck your have getting a Terrabyte IDE HDD nowa days its dying technology... I can only find 750Gb ones...

This guide is pretty reasonable and it will boot straight to XBMC when finished...

http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html

For bigger HDD's you need Xbox Hard Disk Maker and most importantly a copy of xbox partitioner version 1.1

Google will help with all of this...

Quick replies...thats what im talking about...thanks.

I can fit the HDD in the X-Box easily enough. Im a techie myself and have already taken apart the X-Box to have a look inside.

The problem i have is that i know nothing about Linux.

I need a guide, step by step, a proper 'Idiots Guide'.

Ive been to several XBMC websites and it's just gibberish. I couldnt even work out which download to grab.

I clicked on a link which said 'Download Here' and it took me to a forum. The forum contained links to at least four downloads, none of which i could relate to the installation of XBMC. I clicked on the download link at the top of the page and it took me somewhere else....which contained MORE things to download.

Im an idiot when it comes to Linux. Im 38 years old.....and should be able to work it our but i cant even get off the ground....

Treat me like a kid...i really need my hand held with this chaps.

Thanks

See...there you go......flamed already for being a noob....fantastic !!!!

Hence my post.....

The sites ive been to so far have been riddled with Linux speak....so i have presumed that it's all about installing Linux first then installing XBMC....thats how confusing the blummin websites are !!!

Why oh why cant people make things simple....

I read this briefly: http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html

It looks easy enough but it mentions nothing of installing a larger HDD.

Do i just install the new HDD and complete the tutorial? Or do i have to do something to the new HDD before i make a start?

Mod your Xbox first..... you need FTP access to it to get the EEPROM and C Drive data before you can build the new HDD... which has to be done in a PC... with of course a primary master IDE port.... not a SATA machine that has the IDE support for the CD ROM as this is not PRIMARY MASTER.

Serious just get it running XBMC first.... try streaming to it to..... then purchase your HDD... not forgetting a 60cm+ ATA100 IDE cable..... £3 from Maplin before you ask.

Do you see a significant performance upgrade with an ATA100 cable? I've heard it shaves quite a bit off loading times for some larger games, but just XBMC wise, is it worth it?

Geeba
2008-08-14, 15:14
Been debaited many times... but my thinking is if you put an ATA33 cable inbetween an nVidia I/O controller capable of ATA66/100 and a new 7200rpm drive also capable of ATA100 then its gonna slow things down... some test have mesured faster load times and anything that prolongs the life of my Xbox is..... well good! :)

rumour was it save Uncle Bill a $ a box by using a ATA33 over the 80 strand 100 version.... wich when your shifting 20 million+ xboxes... adds up.

Make sure you get a long enough one... 45cm are to short 60cm is about right 75 is a bit big....

I've manage to put a 45cm in mine but with great efford, some crazy curves :) and yes it improves loading times.

Right then girls and boys...

Im going for it this weekend....but....

Im not using the standard X-Box HDD.

Ive found an old 80 GIG HDD for testing the initial build.

Do i still need to mess about with the Mech Commander / Splinter Cell thing?

Is there a site that gives an idiots guide to installing XBMC with a clean fresh HDD?

Sorry to be a pain chaps.

Thanks

I found this:

http://t3ch.yi.se/README_1st.php?y=fat

I then downloaded both the Fat and Slim versions.

It states in the read me that all you need to do is extract the XBMC DIR from the .RAR file to the HDD in use.

Surely it's not as simple as that !!

Do i just extract the XBMC folder to the root of the new HDD, fit the HDD into the X-Box and turn it on?

surely....SURELY ...it's not as simple as that !! ???

1. mod your 'box!!
>softmod (ie splinter cell/...)
>modchip

2. ftp in and grab you eeprom.bin

[assuming you used a softmod]
3. use xboxhdm to "make" a new harddrive using your 80GB
4. use xboxhdm to lock the harddrive

5. replace old harddrive with new harddrive

6. ftp in and extract the .rar you got from t3ch

NOW you can launch XBMC on your 80gb console

Dont use FAT or SLIM builds!!!! they are old now.... and people wont help you if you get problems.... team XBMC are working on another stable release now.... use the Atlantis Alpha3 build....

I followed your link and read this: http://www.productwiki.com/microsoft-xbox/article/how-to-go-from-xbox-to-xbox-media-center-in-30-minutes.html

It told me to go here http://t3ch.yi.se. to download the XBMC files.

I downloaded the most upto date files which on that site are the fat and slim. There's no mention of Atlantis.

I give up. Officialy. Ive given up.

batman91
2008-08-15, 19:39
wait. wait. wait.
the site you mentioned is fine. instead of downlaodign the stable release,
downlaod the "T3CH XBMC 2008-08-12 SVN rev14853-ALPHA3" which is alpha3 leasing up to Atlantis.

I hope yor mind isnt set yet. XBM is eally worth it. After the first hurdle of actually getting it set up one, maintainig it is a breeze.

Ok...ive calmed down.

I stopped drinking three weeks ago and im not doing very well. Ive not touched a drop but it's hard work believe me. My patience is battered and ive been losing my temper very very quickly, attention span is also at a record low.

I'll give it a crack.

I just need to get the Xbox game and all the software, then i'll gve it a go.

Congratulations and keep up the good fight. This project is worth the little bit of headache that you have to go thru to get started. I actually got started with xbox modding and xbmc (actually evox back then) after I returned from a year tour in Kuwait/Iraq in 2003 and found that my loving wife was not so loving after all:shocked: Anyways, I went into depression and heavy drinking followed. Then, a friend of mine (whom I served with overseas, and was going thru the exact same situation) called me up and said, hey, bring your xbox over, I've got something cool to show you. To make a long story short, I've been addicted to the xbox scene ever since and it helped keep me busy through a rough time in my life.

Also, check outAuto Installer Deluxe (http://www.aideluxe.com/)

batman91
2008-08-15, 21:26
i personally would recommend not to use an autoinstaller. i feel its better to do stuf manually and know exactly where stuf is going and what is changing.

anyhow, if you have any more questions, then ask, but try and read around a bit, there are so many tutorials out there it should be easy. if you have trouble getting hold of files (broken links, etc) then post a query and ill do my ebst to help you out

Unless you are REALLY REALLY strapped for cash, i wouldn't do a hotswap. get splitner cell, get a memory card. Especially today, game shops throw these at you for a few pennys. It is much safer especially for a self-proclaimed nooby.

The only "gain" is that you save the price of splinter cell/memory card. harddrives of the IDE specification were never meant to be used in that way, and it can fry the HDD. In my ircle of friends I only know one guy that tried it that way and he screwed up his xbox, and he is one of the more tech savvy people i know.

waldo22
2008-08-16, 17:55
I've used hotswap to mod all of the xboxes I do. Probably at least 8 or 10.

The key is you need to use a wire to ground the xbox chassis to the chassis of the computer you are hotswapping into or out of...

This means that the voltage that the xbox thinks is "ground" is the same as the voltage the computer thinks is ground.

I did it because I didn't want to have to keep buying things, and I didn't want to try to find the "right" game to do this.

Hi All

I managed to get my hands one of these from the chap on Ebay:

I now have the splinter cell game and the memory card.

I now need to buy the Action Replay cable.

After this i need to work out how to set all this up on an 80GIG HDD i have for the project. It seems pointless setting it all up on the original 8GIG HDD as i have a large number of DVD's and general media files to store on the XBMC X-Box.

Im still miles away after nearly two weeks of trying to get all this malarkey ready.

I feel like a complete idiot !!

I mean, i downloaded XBMC for Windows and installed it in under two minutes hehe.

Im now asking myself if all this is actually worth it.

Im getting sooooo frustrated at myself !!

I cant find an Action Replay cable for the life of me so the project is on hold again.

Im also at a loss as to how i would set it all up on the 80GIG HDD i have.

Sorry guys. Im a pain i know.

ok lets all calm down. xbmc is better than everything in the whole wide world (scientific FACT) so its defiantely worth your time :)

if you bought the meoemry card off ebay with splitner cell, it probably already has some exploit already on there. put the moemry card in your xbox and take a look. if there already is an exploit on the memory card, you dont need the action repaly cable.

if there is an exploit on the memory card, make sure to copy it to the HDD. lots of my friends got stumped by the fat you can laod a save game off a mem card :)

if not, then you dont need to buy the action replay cable, you can make it yourself!
if you have a controller you dont care about to muh, an a USb cable, you can just cut the usb cable, and ut the wire leading to the controller and connect the two using electrical tape. then when you put the mem card in the ontroller, it will be recognized under windows (its not QUITE that simple due to driver conflicts, but if you choose this route i can talk you though it)

whatever you do make sure your xbox doesnt end up like this http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-60244

good luck.

I bought the item above, great little package, comes with 100's of emulator games for SNES / PS1 and Mega Drive.

Also comes with all files / programmes needed for the XBMC installation.

I thought it looked great and when i recieved the package it was !!!

If the exploit is on the card already im flying, save for the setup onto the 80GIG HDD.

The 80GIG HDD has been formatted via windows. Im going to use this 80GIG as the testbed to make sure everything works ok before installing the tested and final build onto a larger, possibly 500GIG or 1 Terrabyte HDD.

I'll have a look at the memory card tomorrow when im not so tired.

Note: The HDD being used in this is a blank, formatted HDD.

Cheers again. I know i keep losing my temper, im sorry. Tired and emotional tonight. I work approx 10-12 hours per day. I was up at 6AM this morning and didnt get back home until after 7PM.

I just checked the memory card by plugging it into the xbox controller and booting the xbox.

It shows that it has a 'SID 4 Installer' and also a 'SID4 Splinter Cell PAL' on it.

I presume that these are the exploit files.

Looks like im on that front.

So, the question is:

How do get this installed onto a new and formatted Hard Drive which is NOT the standard 8GIG X-Box Hard Drive.

Thanks again.....

batman91
2008-08-20, 01:50
i have no personal experience with SID, but it is the exploit. you're going to want to copy those to the hdd, then boot up splitner cell and laod the profile. then *magic* happens and you should be in a totally different menu.

when I did my softmod i was "forced" to backup a copy of my eeprom. you're gonna want to look for an option like this. after you've done all the necessary steps you will probably have a hacked dashboard. then you have to FTP into the console and retrieve this eeprom (probably in e:\backup)

now that the xbox (stock) is modded and we have the eeprom on the pc, we are going to foramt the 80gb harddrive. step away from the xbox :)

you'll need xboxhdm.
there should be a readme with xboxhdm, so im gonna simplofy this.
copy over everything from c on the xbox to the c folder, everything fm the e drive on the xbox over to e folder and put your eeprom in the relevant fodler cant remember name)

you may have to add additional files (its been a while :))
then there should be a .bat or .cmd file called build or something. running this script will create an .iso you are going to have to burn (a CD should do it)

then you have to boot your pc with the 80gb harddrive on your priamry master - i cant stress this enough. put yur dvd drive on priamry slave.
boot frm cd and follow on-screen instructions (or grab a tutorial)

basically you want to build the harddrive using the files we put in the c and e, then you are going to lock the HDD using the eeprom. if you need more info onthis stage, google should turn up the exact commands you need to input.
once the harddrive is locked, you should be able to just take out the old harddrive and put in the new one.

in my experience, i always ahd to do the softmod again after upgrading the hdd, but now you are a seasoned pro and have no problems doign that :) - make sure to keep the exploit on the memory card as a backup otherwise you actually are in a bit of a pickel :P

batman91
2008-08-20, 01:55
just to make that really clear.

1. mod stock xbox
2. grab necessary files
3. "make" hdd
4. lock hdd
5. swap hdd
6. mod 80gb xbox

Just going to copy and paste a post I made at another site.

"

I upgraded yesterday on the windows platform and it seems a lot more stable for me. I am going to make sure though if I do come into any problems that I will submit the bug to the trac to make sure it gets fixed. The most stable version is supposed to come out in 2 months.

I am currently building a new XBMC on a Xbox. I thought of the soft mod method but decided on installing a mod chip. This is my plan so far on the cheap. The most important part that it will be a Hi-Def system. Something Lifehacker left out for some reason. I also plan on putting in a bigger hard drive.

- Xbox for $40 (craigslist or ebay)
- Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit for $5 (Amazon Marketplace)
- Microsoft HD AV Pack for $5 used (Gamestop)
- Component cables for $5 (monoprice.com)
- Optical Cable for $5 (monoprice.com)
- 300+ GB Hard Drive ATA 100 for $40 (slickdeals.net)
- DuoX 2 GS modchip for $13 (xbox-scene.com forums)

I went with a mod chip for the reason of the hi def. It is easier to get it set up with the mod chip vs the soft mod. DuoX 2 is the cheapest reliable chip. I did a lot of research on the cables for the Hi-Def set up. Your best bet is to buy the MICROSOFT AV pack which I found quite cheap at gamestop. Than I just added the component and optical cables from monoprice. The remote control should be a nice feature especially for the price at Amazon market place. The Hard drive on the cheap will just take some patience to find a good deal. Just have to make sure it is IDE ATA100. "

It might be helpful to people that are not sure where to find the best deals for a Xbox build. I listed all the prices to build the best build in regards to hooking up to a high def system. From the cheapest cables to not buying a straight component hookup to the xbox because it is the worst quality. The AV packs can get quite expensive and Gamestop has them for only $5. Something I have not seen listed anywhere on the forums

Oh...by the way chaps......

I 'found' a Dell Poweredge 500SC server.

I dropped 'FreeNas' onto it's 20 GIG 5400 IDE HDD.

Also hooked up:

1 x 200 GIG 7200 RPM SATA Internal HDD
1 x 250 GIG 7200 RPM SATA Internal HDD

Nice!

So, i will have this server sat in my spare room with all my media on. Hehe.

EPIC FAIL !!!!

I completed this process as per the instructions i recieved with the Splinter Cell package bought from Ebay:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/311710

It didnt work.

I followed the process to the letter and everything went fine until steps 12 and 13, these steps did not appear.

Step 14 worked fine and all other processes etc were ok.

When the xbox was re booted without the Splinter Cell disk in the drive the xbox boots to the old MS dashboard.

Any ideas gentlemen?

Once again im at a standstill....and this was on STEP 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant even get the new dashboard to install correctly !!!

Trebz,

1. Did you know that a hardmoded (chipmod) xbox doesn't need a locked hdd?

2. If you have a NAS and the xbox will get the media files from there, why don't you use the stock one?

Trebz
2008-08-25, 17:08
No, i didnt know a chipped xbox does not need a locked HDD.

The introduction of the NAS server was due to my curiosity. My company provides the NAS server as a business solution. My engineers have developed it but ive not really been involved in the project.

Im a director so im spending less and less time working on techie projects nowadays, can you tell... ;-)

Ive heard my engineers waffling on about how good Freenas is so i thought id 'borrow' a server from myself (found it in our server room) and give it a go.

As for using a stock Xbox, well, i want to use XBMC but im a complete noob to the world of xbox modding. I thought this would be the simplest solution but as you can see from the post so far it's far from simple.

It's very frustrating knowing that hundreds, ney thousands of people have completed this simple mod / installation of XBMC and im sat here with my thumb jammed well and truly up my ****.

All i want to do is take out the standard 8GIG HDD, replace it with a 7200 RPM 80 GIG and have XBMC running on it.

So frustrating.

Trebz
2008-08-25, 17:17
I mean...........

The NAS server....i stripped, serviced the hardware, cleaned out the entire unit (was a bit dusty), re built it from component level, installed two new SATA drives running off a PCI SATA card, installed and configured Freenas....(adding drives, mounting, formatting etc)

IN ABOUT HALF AN HOUR !!!!!

Heheheheehehe

Ive been sat here for weeks now trying to get my noggin around how to put XBMC on a blummin Xbox heheheehhe

As you know your way round hardware, i would try the hotswap, read the article carefully (use the ground cable, very important!) and try to softmod using xboxhdm.
And then after softmodding the 8gig stock HDD (which is plenty for xbmc) see if you really need a bigger one.

All fine and dandy but........

I have just run through the process for soft modding and it failed.

I was planning the swap to the 80GIG HDD so that i would have the old 8GIG as a backup in case it all goes pear shaped.

What i asked for was a simple 'Idiots Guide' to modding the xbox so i could install XBMC.

I really dont want to start messing about with a whole new approach now, i have everything i need to complete the job save for a little help with my particular setup.

Can anyone help at all.......

I have followed the instructions in the post above to the letter and it failed.....the xbox completed everything as expected but still boots to the MS dashboard, no sign of the modded dashboard at all.

i jsut read through some info on sid4. try booting the xbox with the disc drive open and then with it close (aka fire it up from the pweor button and one from the eject button), it may be modded and jsut botting into an unmodified state to allow you onto xbox live.

failing that i would suggest getting the savegae on the memory card yourself to make sure you are using the most up-to-date and omplete package. if you know anybody near yo with an already modded xbox, getting the savegame on a memory card is painfully easy. if you havent got a modded xbox anywhere near yo its still fairly simpel to achieve.

i dont want to insult you, but you are SURE that you followed each and every step? it sayd taht the softmod will not isntall (step 12) if you ahvent done an ms backup and an eeprom backup and ahve you got an msdash higher than 5960.

actually i jsut read throug hthose steps and i cant see any mention of dash 5960. so this could actualyl be the issue. if you've got halo 2 (or any of the later xbox games) just boot it and select xbox live from the menu and it should update your dash. if you boot into the ms dash, then there should be system info or soemthing liek that. there are 2 nubmers that you should see soemwhere. kernel and dash i think. one of them should be x.y.5960.z or osmething liek that. google it if need be. if its NOT 5960, then thats the culprit

good luk. we'll get this sorted.

PROPER DANCER !!!!!

Good call my friend!!!

I plopped my copy of Star Wars Battlefront in the xbox and jumped online, it updated 1st time and now i can see the new dashboard. It shows that i can 'Play Games From Hard Drive', Run Emulators and something else.

Im having to knock off now as i need an early night ready for work tomorrow.

I'll continue the project tomorrow night, starting with the installation of the new 80GIG HDD.

Wish me luck chaps heheheheheheh

For the 80Gig to work you'll need the eeprom to lock it, dont forget that, GL!

w00t. yeah the otehr steps should be fairly simple now. the eeprob backup (and other handy files) will now be easily accessable once you network the xbox and ftp in, and then with the files in hand all you need is xboxhdm and you are good to go.

All........

No update as yet, no further works carried out. Not started on the HDD formatting.

I shot of on a bit of a tangent last night, setting up a wireless access point to hang out of the back of the Xbox.

I'll be damned if im running an ugly piece of CAT5 all the way from my wireless router in the box room upstairs to the downstairs living room !!

Kinda cool..... Xbmc, Xbox, Wireless, NAS Server.

I'll be living in Funksville !!

Trebz
2008-08-27, 22:39
Right then......

I have the additional Wireless Access point set up and working.

I have two laptops in the living room which can access the internet via the new 'AP'.

Problem.....i have the CAT5 ethernet patch lead connected to the Xbox from the new AP....but.....i cant get the Xbox online.

The Xbox tells me that it does not have a wireless device installed.

Any ideas? Or should i go to an Xbox specific forum?

Thanks.....

Trebz
2008-08-27, 22:46
Additional note:

The Xbox HAS aquired an IP address via DHCP....from the wireless router upstairs....NOT the access point downstairs....so....

Why cant the Xbox see the AP which is connected to the Xbox ethernet port...?

This is fast becoming one entertaining post im thinking hehehehe

batman91

ok so tehre are 2 issues here, correct?

1. no inet
2. no dash

no dash - im gonan assume this is human error. i assume you did something to change this (by accident). you should still be able to boot games so jsut softmod it again and you should be back on a modded dash.

as for the inet, im not sure wht type of network you'e got going over there, but its possible the router you are plugging in to is just repeating hte wireless signal, and plugging an ethernet lead into it wont work the same way as conenting to it wirelessly.

ive got 2 routers one connected directly to the inet as it were, and a few metres away that repeats the signal to the garden. if i conent via LAN o the 2nd router, its a no-go - only WLAn to the 2nd works. MAYBE ive not configured it properly, but i THINk that this is the proepr behaviour. if you want the xbox to go wireless, i think you are going to ahve to buy a etehrent wiresls bridge.

your best bet is to connect a PC the same way as you intend to connect the xbox, as PCs can be more user firendly for novies in diagnosing wtf is going on.

Trebz
2008-08-28, 21:21
Also.........

I noticed that the normal green LED's on the front of the Xbox are nor red, it's like this with or without a game disk in the drive.

Red is bad.....i have been led to believe.....

It was like this before i introduced the wireless factor and after i noticed that the new dashboard had reverted to the old MS dashboard.

?

batman91

red is bad on a stock xbox. with my softmod, the light turned amber when the softmod was active. there was a way to change that on my xbox. i was using krayzies ndure softmod and there was an "extras" application you vould run to change advanced settings.

this is PROBABLY a default thing for SID. changing your light to let you know that something is non-stock (aka dont go on live) there is PROBABLY a way to change it. i dont have SID, but im sure google will confirm any one of these.

have you been able to recover the modded dash, and can you pinpoint what changed the dash to make sure it doesnt happen again?

and that is an awful pun: "Red is bad.....i have been led to believe....." lol

Righty then.

Back to square one. Ive just tried re installing the softmod and im stuck in the same loop as before, the softmod will not install.

Im getting bored.

Any suggestions?

It doesnt mattter what i do within the softmod menu, it just wont work for me.

As to why the softmod has gone, im stumped. It should 'Just Work'.

This is the exact reason I never liked softmodding....I guess I've always been more of a hardware person.

i wouldnt blame the softmod. ;)

ok, well

SID may have isntalled a dual-boot (aka modded and unmodded) that can be accessed by eitehr switching on with eject button or pwoer button. that would be one explanation as to why you ar seeing the ms dash. try both buttons from the off state.

if that doesnt work make sure you are doing an ms bakup, an eeprom backup an wahtnot. pretend you ahvent done it before, make sure you do everythign it asks , even if you feel you shouldnt ahve to.

if that doesnt work, and you have already got the eeprom backup and otehr necessary files, you could just skip it and create the new 80gb hdd.

alternatively, you ould try botting frostsy rescure disc or similar. if the console is still moddd, the disc will boot and you should be able to access ftp/filemaanger to sort out your dash.

or you could try getting a different savegame exploit.

It has the SID data on it for the softmod.

I've spliced a male USB onto the end of an old xbox controller after reading this: http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html#download

Then downloaded and installed this: http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html#download

As per instructions.

I now have an Xbox controller for my laptop and PC hehe

But.....ive plugged the xbox memory card into the xbox controller and it cant recognise the device PAH!

Download Action Replay there... take no notice that its an update.... extract the files... install the version in the extracted folder.... got to program file\datel\action replay\saves etc and put the nDure software there.... ether SC MA or 007.... start A/R your software should be in the PC database file... plug in your memory card... if the BIG AR on the action replay software doesnt light up... it doesnt recognise your card... GAME OVER!!

Fire up the Xbox... copy the game save... ie splinter cel... its in 2 parts copy both!... put in the SC ORIGINAL game.... not a copy... load a game dont start from fresh.. highlight LINUX.... click... bang... your Xbox has been forced to crash!.... backup your EEPROM... check dash revision.... follow on screen instructions... ie click OK alot... take game out when it says.... once all that is finished check th IP address... start FTP on your PC and access the xbox file structure.... in E:\DASHBOARD delete or move the EvoX files.... move them to apps perhaps.... and copy all the XBMC files in there.... re-start your xbox... enjoy movie, music, youtube, pictures, email, weather info... get me drift?

Finally after waiting nearly all day i have the Krazie expliot etc.

I unpacked the SC folder within to my D:\Program Files\Datel\Action Replay XBOX\Saves folder but when i open AR it dows not show the saves in the 'PC Database' window.

I then copied / pasted the SC folder to all other folders available in the AP program folder, still nothing shown in the AR 'PC Database' window.

I also, this afternoon, installed an 80mm case fan into the Xbox, after tests post install the Xbox runs at 60 Degs......i removed the new fan and installed the old standard fan...and it runs at 58 Degs.

The old fans staying put for now hehe.

So, ive now copied the Krazie Splinter Cell files to the memory card then copied them to the Xbox Hard Drive in the normal way.

Ive inserted the Splinter Cell CD and attempted to run the exploit, it doesnt work.

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk181/Trebz50/ActionReplay.jpg

Have i copied the correct files across to the xbox?

The path to the .ZIP i copied to the memory card and then to the Xbox is:

Krayzie Ndure Pack\CS\SC Save1\Udata.zip

And:

Krayzie Ndure Pack\CS\SC Save2\Udata.zip

I promise.....PROMISE....that when i get this thing working you'll NEVER hear from me again ;-)

well first off when it works i defianetly want to hear from you again thanking us :) - as for the problem with the game crashing, my first idea for a fix would be to boot to ms dash and make sure there are no save files on the xbox. if there is some left over SID stuff it may be casuing a bit of a conflict. (jsut make sure there are no splitner cell saves and make sure none of the saves say SID or LINUx or soemthing. any other games you can keep)

then transfer over teh NDURE stuff _again_

give that a go and post back.

It's not exactly fallen to bits.

The xbox still works and plays games / starts up to the MS Dash.

I backed up the eeprom when i ran the very first sofdmod a while ago.

Forgive me for asking but i managed to find Krazie's 1.0 exploit after approx 2 hours of scouring the net. It was a struggle finding this version and obviously i didnt even manage to find the most upto date '1.1.1' version.

How would one go about finding and downloading the latest version.

Again forgive me, im sure that the posting of links etc to the downloads is against forum policy but if someone could steer me in the right direction it would be grealty appreciated.

I'd love to work off the latest version.

You should be able to move the Evox files from E:\Dashboard and replace them with the XBMC files... it would then boot straight to XBMC as your main dash....

2008-09-04, 15:42
Hi again

Yus...i have indeed been tinkering.

Im not overly impressed with the sound output i must say. I'm running the Xbox through a Panasonic SA-HT1500 with surround sound and all the bells and whistles that come with it. When playing movies the sound only comes through the front three channels, no surround sound through the Xbox im affraid.

Also i have a Hitatchi 38" Plasma TV mounted on the wall above the fireplace. When i play a DVD through the Panasonic the movie fills the TV screen as expected, when playing an .avi etc via Xbox / XBMC the movie is shrunk to a pillowbox format. I've tried changing all the settings within XBMC but it still stays the same. I've gone back to watching movies via my Panasonic for now until i can get it working with XBMC. Surely theres a way. If i cant have the movies play in full screen i'll be losing the major reason for building the Xbox for XBMC.

The functionality of the Xbox is now better than i expected, im really impressed with what it can do. It's also running much quieter with the 7200 RPM HDD installed, i also need to mention that it's running cooler without any additional fans or fan upgrades. Odd.

I'll not be booting to XBMC as a dash for now either as im liking the options for gaming etc which the Unleashed dash gives.

Ive been playing around with streaming / scrips aswell, very good. Nice and easy to setup a new script. I've yet to hear anything streaming though as nothing seems to happen when i select an item to stream.

To summarise: Im not really that impressed right now, i guess i have some more work to do. I can however play old Sega and SNES games. Playing .mp3's and music files is ok as well.

I just need to get the movies working correctly as this was the main reason for my wanting XBMC on the Xbox.

Day off work today, painting my fence and loafing around with the Xbox controller in hand hehe.

I'll be keeping one eye on the forum if you need to ask any questions.

Oh, one last thing. When i built the new 80 GIG HDD i left out the formatting of the 'F' drive during the Xboxhdm setup, i only formatted the 'C' and 'E'. Can i hook the HDD up to my spare PC and re run the Xboxhdm process again to format the 'F' drive without changing the current config of the 'C' and 'E' drives? Im hopeing i dont have to completely re build to format the 'F'....?

So, i just formatted the 'F' drive and have 70GIG or so to play with.

I created the following folders in order to copy data across from the 'E' drive.

F:\Games
F:\Emulators

Problem: When i attempt to copy / move the contents of the folders on the 'E' drive to the folders on the new 'F' drive i receive the following error from the Xbox file manager:

'An error occurred while moving files. Error Code 2 Would you like to view the log file.'

The log file contains the following:

20:20:36 BEGIN Move Operation
20:20:36 Move FAILED "Root\neogenesis emulator". Error Code 2

Is this a permissions issue?

It would appear that it's not the yellow button after testing. Pressing the yellow button displays 'Not Available' on the TV screen.

However, there is a 'Zoom' button on the TV remote that does the job.

Not quite as well as i was expecting but its a little better than it was, thanks fella.

You can launch ALL you xbox games from XBMC... check out "wide icon" support for them... they look the t1tz!... sorry EvoX top software but days gone by as far as Dashboards are concerned with XBMC looking/working the way it does!

If you are running it on a Plasma you NEED an HD pack... google Enigma and buy one of these...

A paltry £7!!! and they work fine!

Connect the Xbox to you componet connectors on the pannel and set th Xbox up at 720p.. (Enigma is your friend here!). its a differnt WORLD! trust me on this! also you need to connect the Optical out to your surround sound amp to gain surround sound... red and white phono are not going to give you digital sound! If you came to my house and saw upscaled DVD playing through my surround sound trust me you would look at your xbox in a different light... if your not overly impressed with XBMC something is very wrong!

As far as the look of the movies goes... XBMC will only squirt on your TV what you feed it... feed it 4:3 it will play 4:3 feed it 16:9 it will play 16:9..... double check all settings,,, calibrate the screen... check player setting in Video... check aspect...

does it have to be a memory card at all or would a modded box do the job with the original hd connected (since you could unlock and lock the drive) ?

Lost me a bit there Kizmiaz? you need the memory card to mod the xbox in the first place... ???

hmmm.

i was thinking about unlocking the original drive in a modded box to copy the savegame files to it because i don't have a mem card but a modded box.
then lock it again to run the softmod installation.

It would appear that it's not the yellow button after testing. Pressing the yellow button displays 'Not Available' on the TV screen.

However, there is a 'Zoom' button on the TV remote that does the job.

Not quite as well as i was expecting but its a little better than it was, thanks fella.

yellow button as in "y" on the box controller? :)
i cant help you with the sound, havent got anything fancy on my end
xboxpartioner will prob do the trick for your HDD, jsut be careful what you click

and xbmc>all as a dash :)

@Kizmiaz
if you are suggesting taking a stock hdd from an unmoded xbox, putting it in a modded xbox and copying the savegames on that way, i dont think itll work but im not very informed on what hardmods can do, so it may wok. AFAIK, hotswap (dont do it ;)) and mem card are the noly options

Okey Dokey.

Simple enough to do so i just set up the Xbox to boot to XBMC instead of the Evolution dashboard.

Took approx 5 minutes. Actually, it took as long as it takes to copy the files to the correct directory on the Xbox then re boot.

Fantastic. Kind of.

As i have now moved away from the Evo dashboard i seem to have lost the ability to 'Copy Games' to the Xbox hard drive. I quite liked this option in the Evo dashboard.

Can i 'Copy Games' from within XBMC, ive been looking but cant find anything relating to copying. I can run games from the hard drive without problems.

You should be able to move the Evox files from E:\Dashboard and replace them with the XBMC files... it would then boot straight to XBMC as your main dash....

What TV do you have? if it a LCD/Plasma next job is HD! trust me if you think XBMC looks good now wait untill you see it in 720p!

Well done by the way....!! ;)

I cant select the option for 720p, it's greyed out. Do i have to buy the extra's you mention later in this post ?

there is no option to opy xbox games afaik, you can lways boot to unleashx as an app and copy from there. (as its a 1-time thing i dont see it as a huge issue)

im pretty sure (no HDTV here) that the 720 option is greyed out because you havent got the cable. when you plug in the cable it becomes un-greyed and you're good to go.

Hi Batman

You can copy games to the hard drive after installing XBMC:

http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?p=217766#post217766

Im sat here now dropping all of my games onto my new 'F' partition hehe.

DVD2Xbox works great, it looks like it uses the XBMC dash as a template as well.

More configurable than the standard EvoX 'Copy Game' tool aswell.

I suggest you grab it and have a look. Dont forget to edit the .xml file accordingly.

Took me about 5 mins to get it installed and running and that included the FTP time. It's gotta be good if i can do it in five minutes hehehe

;-)

Oh....and when i setup the Xbox to boot to XBMC i lost the ability to boot to the EvoX dash.

There was a file on the HDD that i could run prior to setting it up to XBMC which is no longer there. I didnt delete it.

Hence my looking for an alternative in DVD2Xbox.

I simply copied the XBMC DIR onto the E drive as per instructions.

Thought id let you know.

Yes... you cant output HD signals over SCART or composite... you need component... the link I posted...

Its greyed out because your Xbox is PAL and HD is only supported in NTSC... hence I said to look up Enigma Video mode switcher....

Geeessss Trebz... you need to format the F!!! google xbox partioner ver 1.1.... install it as a program in the apps folder..... run it.. READ IT! READ IT! READ IT! before finalising ANYTHING! or your'll end up back where you started

Hey Geebmiester....

So im going to go for your suggested solution to gain 720p.

I need help with my shopping list.

I'll buy one of these from the website in your post: 'ORIGINAL XBOX COMPONENT AV CABLE LEAD with OPTICAL out'

You also mentioned the 'Enigma'. What's this exactly, after a bit of googling i think it's the item on the bottom of the products page as per above: 'COMPONENT COMPOSITE MULTI AV SWITCH BOX XBOX 360 PS3 Wii'

Am i right?

Ive been googling for weeks, i cant find anywhere to get the 'xbox partitioner version 1.1' from.

I have everything else i need. PAH !!!

it's been a while that i chip-modded my first box and due to the fact that it didn't boot with the stock hdd of my recent project i wonder how i ever got the first box working at all.
word is: i kinda trashed the drive and 2 days later i found a second hand shop in my town selling used electronics including mem card and action replay:oo:

A little update for all.

As you know i have gone down the NAS server (Freenas) route.

The wireless link is'nt so good, it's a bit laggy. After doing a bit of reading on the forum i found that SMB shares and wireless to XBMC are not the best solution.

SMB does not like wireless connections.

Im looking into setting up the wireless connection via FTP tonight if i get time.

As for XBMC, im warming to it to say the least. Ive continued fiddling around with it and apart from a few little gripes i like it.

Need to work on my DVD backup solution, im thinking of backing the DVD's up by converting them to a .ISO file as this seems to be the best and simplest solution. Unless you can correct me.

Im also liking the sound of streaming TV via XBMC but i cant get my head around it right now. Must be the time of the month.

Will update more soon.

Latest Update:

I got XBMC setup to stream music and Videos via FTP without a hitch. The music now plays faultlessly. No more Lag

I also backed up a DVD to .ISO format using DVD Shrink. This is where the next episode of my traumatic tale begins.

The .ISO file is 4.7GIG in size but when attempting to play it via XBMC it only registers with a file size of 386MB. The .ISO will not play either.

If i view the .ISO via the XBMC file manager the file is 4.7 GIG. If i navigate to it via the 'Videos' button on the XBMC dash it is seen as being 386MB.

Trauma.

Im off to bed.

Nighty Night.

Why FTP? just use SMB.... simple

I had been using SMB shares over wireless since the first day i had XBMC on the Xbox and the NAS server, it ran like a hog big time.

I read somewhere that SMB shares do not work very well over wireless so i changed everything over to FTP and it works perfectly.

Comments?

Dear All / Geeba....

So, i recieved my special 'Optical' cable last Thursday and hooked it upto my DVD player / Recorder. Nothing happened. The RGB on my DVD Recorder is OUT only.

Hhmm....

I connected it directly to my RGB on the plasma TV, hey presto ! Picture on screen. Nice. Set the Xbox to NTSC (Thanks Geeba) even better, set XBMC to run in 720p....

Oh...My....god. It's beautiful. I could hear angels and orchestra's.

XBMC look fantastic running in 720p and NTSC.

Problem......no sound. No optical on my TV.

Problem......all my other TV cables are plastered into my walls....and the RGB hangs down from the bottom of the TV to the Xbox.....the missus aint having that as it looks rubbish. My plasma TV is above the fireplace, wall mounted with no cables on view.

Im left in a bit of a mess now. I have everything i need but cant have it how it should be. PAH!

Is there such a thing as an RGB to SCART converter so that i can run the RGB into the DVD recorder then out through the SCART cable in the wall to the TV ??

Hhmm......close but no cigar for me....im affraid to say.

Geeba.....after seeing XBMC in 720p i now get the point. It's great. Also after learning a little more about the Xbox / XBMC setup im now convinced that it's a good thing.

I could do with some help getting it all on screen and setup with sound though.........

Thanks
