View Full Version : Is there a way to lock an Xbox hardrive without opening the Xbox?
HI Guys,
I recently acquired a second XBOX with error code # 5. I guess this mean that the hardrive is locked.
Is thee a way to unlock the hardrive with out having to open the XBOX?
Regards,
Henry J.
yes. there are tools you can run on the xbox that will lock and unlock the hard drive. go to xbox-scene.com
I've been looking for a few days now and all the tutorials that I found requires you to
removed the hard drive from the XBOX and connected to your PC.
Do you know of another specific method?

AFAIK, error 5 means the HDD is unlocked, and yo want to [lock] it. Unlocking/Locking can be done by a few programs on the xbox (one i know for sure is Frostys Rescue Disc), but I was under the impression that only modchip'd/TSOP flashed consoles could do ANYTHING with an unlocked console.
What I'm saying is that if you are error'ing out with error 5, you probably cant boot any program that could lok/unlock your HDD from withing the xbox. So your only option is to take it out of the xbox, and even then you're gonan need a copy of the eeprom/hddkey.
I could be wrong on this one though, I dont really know much. Id recommend you try booting Frostys Rescue Disc. If you can get that running your sorted, but I fear it wont work.
Thank you very much for the reply.
I just tried frosty's rescue disk and unfortunately, the XBOX does not boot from this disk. It just goes to the error page.

That's what i was expecting. If you've got the eeprom.bin/hddkey then you can use xboxhdm to lok it again. if not you're gonna have to chip the console AFAIK. Im fairly certain most 'decent' chips will allow you to boot an xbox without a fully functional (locked) harddrive. THEN you can use frostys to lock it and can also get rid of the chip again.
or make a EEPROM reader... cant remember how... few diodes, a serial cable and a steady soldering hand.... or for £19.99 go to your local GAME store and buy a new one.... alot less time and hassel..

Here's the "how-to" thread on making an EEPROM reader for the xbox:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/Reading_Xbox_Hdd_key.htm
and here's the thread where I described how to do it:
http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33266
Basically:
1) make the "reader" cable. used two diodes, a resistor, an RJ-45 female to DB-9 converter, and some CAT5 cable. No soldering required.
2) read your EEPROM using PonyProg, or something similar.
3) put what you want on your xbox hard drive
4) us a program called LiveInfo with your EEPROM that you copied to generate the locking key for the hard drive, lock it, and you're good to go.
Good luck,
-Wes
Thank you guys for all the replies, it sounds like to much work. I rather pick up another XBOX they're like $60.00 used at gamestop.
Anyone instrested in buying this one from me, on the cheap. let me know.
