View Full Version : XBMC for Xbox SVN builds getting more and more unreliable/unstable?

In the past 3 months or so, I've found XMBC too be less reliable in a few aspects:
1. Lock ups occur frequently when playing video over network, requiring the Xbox to be turned off then on again.
2. Frequently, a video will prepare to play over the network, then just cancel and go back to the menu.
3. Sometimes when a video plays, it will not allow you to use the transport controls (like rewind, fast forward and skip) and it won't remember where it was last stopped (even with resume function on). If you keep trying to stop and play the file again a few times, it will eventually work.
4. The text scrolling smoothly issue, I would rather it pause occasionally than constantly slow down, speed up and move 'jerkily'.
I have tried re-installing XBMC from scratch, but the problems remain.
I keep hoping that the new versions will fix the problems, but no luck yet.
Is anyone else having problems like the first 3 I mentioned, and is there anything I can do to fix it?
Is it just that all these new features/improvements have destabilised the system in general?

Hi there.
Part of the problem is we have far fewer people testing and using the xbox builds within the team. Further, all development is being done in the linuxport branch and being merged back infrequently. Thus, depending on when you build some stuff will work and some stuff may not, depending on when a merge was done and what issues (if any) have been discovered thus far.
I believe that most recent problems have been fixed in SVN, so hopefully whenever you get your next build things should be a bit better.
Please test out the next build you can - there's been a very large merge just gone in the last couple of days (and numerous other fixes) so hopefully things are getting a little better.
Cheers,
Jonathan
There have been some issues over the last couple months but Xbmc for xbox should be pretty stable now.
I still continue to use the Xbmc for xbox more than anything else. I've not experienced a lockup playing a video over the network which is my primary use. I will play a bunch of cartoons or children's shows in a playlist for my son and let it play for a few hours.
The problem with the Xbmc getting "ready to play" and aborting was corrected. If you're still running that version, a work around is to use "Play With..." and then choose the dvdplayer.
I use the video "jump" controls frequently and I've never found them not to work. I don't bother with FF or RW anymore. I find the jump controls far more convenient. And there definitely have been problems with FF and RW in the past.
I've not experienced the so-called "jerky text scrollers" but then again, I don't really pay that much attention. And I know this is not the first complaint I've seen since that code was changed. (I'm running in 720p mode for everything. This may be PAL specific, I'm not sure.)
And as Jmarshall stated, the xbox version is getting less attention. All development is done in the linux branch (which is really multi-platform -- win32, linux, and osx), unless its something xbox specific which is very rare now. Then the changes get ported back into the xbox version, about once a week. So, if you compile from svn, and find problems, please post very specific bug reports so that they can be addressed.
Perhaps, then, it is time to consider a new feature-freeze / bug-hunt towards the goal of a new 'stable release' for the xbox...

Perhaps... ;)

I solely use xbmc for the xbox I would also like to see a stable release soon and to rid all of the bugs from xbmc. I too have so many issues going on with xbmc such as lockups, videos not starting, library issues, thumbnails randomly not appearing, changing profile lock-ups and fanart randomly not appearing. But the strange thing is it got progressively worse when I upgraded to T3CH XBMC 2008-07-28 SVN rev14439. As in 2 weeks ago when I got this build it worked fine now its barely playing any videos at all especially networked vid's. ???

it is just as much up to YOU, the users of XBMC, as it is up to the the XBMC developers to get XBMC bugs fixed. If YOU do not make proper and detailed bug reports so that each and every issue can be replicated by a developer then the problem will not get fixed, simple as that.

Please do your part :;): ...otherwise you loose your right to whine and complain

I've also noticed lock ups on the xbox when going to "log off" a profile to switch to a different user. Going to the trac site now to see if this has been documented or not.

That's GREAT news! ('nuff said)

Thanks for the trac report. Could you please add a full debuglog where you reproduce this issue?
Does it happen all the time?
Does it happen more with one skin than another?
Is there anything in particular you are doing with profiles that others may not be?
Please try and think of all scenarios so that reproducing the bug is as easy as possible.
Cheers,
Jonathan

I am having all these problems constantly.
Network video playback freezes almost like clock work I wanna say ever 30 min of play back time or so minus time paused, time sitting idle with video stopped does not affect it.
I am using all default options on the t3ch release rev14853 with PM3 skin
This has happened with the past bunch of releases
Would just going to a Stable release such as T3CH XBMC 2006-11-12 2.0.1
fix my problem? What would I be missing out on featurewise?

Please help of fix the bugs instead by submitting proper detailed bug reports with debug logs to trac:

I have not seen these issues but also do not use all of these features on my xbox. I also am still using an older build due to xbox kia being removed. I have pre 2.1 which is one of the last with kia.
I hope that development for the xbox version of XBMC does not stop with the focus towards these other OS's. Remember where it all began and I that there are a lot more users out there on old xbox's then you might think. I have been setting them up for friends and all of them are not savy enough to upgrade XBMC and would most likely never get on a forum like this.

Using BETA 2 - mediastram lite. Please try to understand that posts like that (which basically only say "XBMC does not work for me") are utterly useless and totoally unproductive. You need to provide actually facts and information in order, if you do not provide a debug log and descriptions on how to replicate the problem then you might as well not post at all as. Please read:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=HOW-TO_Submit_a_Proper_Bug_Report
...and if you are willing to help Team-XBMC troubleshoot problems even further then also read:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/index.php?title=HOW-TO_help_with_Quality_Assurance
Finally, please post a separate thread for each unique question that you have. Threads with more than one problem are unmanageable.
