View Full Version : Aeon nfos
http://www.aeonproject.com/images/frontpage2/frontpage2_potter.jpg
For those who haven't encountered them before, nfo files are text documents you place alongside your videos if you'd rather XBMC's library used local information. So if you don't like the godawful plot synopses on the IMDb, or if you want finer control over the layout of your library info, this is how you do it.
The nfo files have to share the filename of their associated video, the only difference being their extension - nfo. It's much the same syntax as thumbnails and movie fanart. An example:
The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension.avi
The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension.tbn
The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension.nfo
Note the extensions. The top one is the video file, the next the thumbnail, and the third is the nfo.
I've started using my own nfos for Aeon for a number of reasons:
- they scan faster and more reliably than internet scrapers
- they're better written (though seldom by me)
- I can edit them to the precise character count where they fit Aeon's Showcase display
And now I'm going to share them with you:
http://aeonproject.com/nfobin/
There aren't that many yet, but it'll keep on growing. XBMC's font resizing isn't 100% consistent across all resolutions, but I know these fit both 720p and 1080p. Enjoy!
THX, but what is with the Fanart, is The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension - Fanart.jpg right ?

I don't know, but would many people want to spend the time making custom synopses for just Aeon? Since other skins will have different amounts of room to display this information?
Also, what if the design of Aeon changes, and the amount of text able to be displayed changes? Seems like a possible waste of time to do this.
A more plausible method of working with this issue would perhaps be to have the ability to use a quick press on the down button when the info has rolled over... that way, while scrolling in Showcase view, you can pause on a movie, let the info roll across and display, then hit the down button to scroll through the info.
Then to exit the info screen, just press the left/right buttons as you normally would to return to the movie listing.
The amount of text visible in Aeon won't change. That's it now.
As for people using other skins, they're not who these are for. Notice that I haven't suggested other people make their own, I'm just sharing what I've done myself. And besides, given the choice of barely-literate, randomly formatted tripe or something standardised and readable, which would you prefer?
I have this :
Blade II.avi
Blade II.tbn
Blade II.nfo
Blade II-fanart.jpg
But he don't import the Fanart, it is a bug from XBMC or it is my probleme.
I use Mac OSX XBMC = Plex.

plex? how would we know. go to their forums and ask.
if you use xbmc for mac it will work ofc
Blade II.avi
Blade II.tbn
Blade II.nfo
Blade II-fanart.jpg
That works fine for me in Plex. Which version are you using?

Great! Nice answer, you really want to help people!
I also use plex. It doesn't seem to pick up the -fanart.jpg, so I have to select them manually (select "get fanart" when pressing i on a movie)
i really want to help people with OUR product. you know, the one i know what supports and not. do you really expect us to have the faintest idea what the 'other guys' merges from our codebase or not??? it's like expecting msft to support bsd just because they use the bsd ip stack.
if you want to use plex, you need to go them for support. it's only logical

and if I want to use plex AND Aeon?
Then I go to both places :)
sure you can go here and ask AEON related questions. but fanart support has nothing to do with aeon.
@Weavus Plex RC3 and your ?
I add it per Get Fanart at the moment, but the best ist, when it find per -Fanart.jpg .
While I appreciate the interest of the Plex guys in Aeon and its trajectory, I have to reiterate that its "target platform" is Linux, and more specifically XBMC. So while I'm happy for them to bundle it or whatever, and of course am happy for its users to enjoy it, I can only support it here, and for this software.

I already do this for PM3. I stated this when I first setup my system - B4 nfo files were a reality. I manually edited the db. I want to see the synposis in one hit without having to arrow/scroll.
Now that nfo files are here, I'm slowly getting around to working on those (not much action on them tho currently.)

Thanks for highlighting this. We have created an Aeon subforum in the Plex forums in order to help anyone having issues with Aeon on Plex. Hopefully folks will see this and leave you alone here so you can keep cranking! Always feel free to point people in that direction!

I've read the wiki and searched, but just for clarification, after I clean my video database and run the IMDB scrapper for a folder, it should pick up the .nfo files first? And these should just be regular text files?

Regular text files named to moviename.nfo, correct. They will take precedence over scraping imdb but remember that the info inside the .nfo must adhere to proper format. That means no missing / <> etc etc.

good then that means that I don't have to have .nfo files for every movie on my drive. I'll just add that to my to do list, along with finding icons and fanart for every frigin movie I have....
Why not use the "XBMC Movie Companion" ? It'll create a .nfo a .tbn and download available fanarts...

Couldn't recommend the above highly enough. It's soooo handy.

I did try that out, a few bugs still, but it got the majority of my collection done. I would recommend it highly also and am looking forward to the future releases.

Heard of anything that does similar on a Mac?
My dream scenario would be a program that can connect to an XBMC box (on any machine which XBMC can run) and manage the library in the same manner.
Of course this would require XBMC support for remotely connecting to the library safely. I hope one day such a feature will exist.

It does... google Netdrive. Works for me

And what happens if XBMC is modifying the library at the same time?

why would it be? Obvoiusly you wouldnt update it if you knew xbmc was modifying it at that point in time. Common sense should tell you that it would only lead to corruption of data...

This really so when I put the nfo into a new movie folder, I go to my xbox, click update library, and then nothing happens. I have to go to file mode, click the info button, and then wait for the info to load. Is there any faster way to deal with this? Could be pretty frustrating on a clean install.

I meant to say, this is really cool, but, when I...
How does one get the imdb.com picture html addresses?
How does one get the imdb.com picture html addresses?
What I meant was how does one get the imdb.com actor thumbs without using the scraper to create custom .nfos?
I'm having trouble with Aeon displaying my movie nfo's. I downloaded the XBMC Media Companion and scraped IMDB, which did a great job. After realizing that Aeon wasn't displaying the nfo, I opened it up in notepad along with an original nfo that was taken from aeonproject.com's nfobin to make sure that they looked the same, and they do.
I am using the latest build of XBMC for Windows and the latest build of Aeon which I downloaded from aeonproject.com (which is actually alpha13, though the link and zip folder say its alpha14).
Is there something I'm missing here? Any help would be great appreciated!

Did you scan your nfos to the Library?
Did you scan your nfos to the Library?
I scanned the movie to the library after the .nfo was made - if there's some other step then I've totally missed it. I've tried searching for 'nfo' but as you can guess the results aren't that great.
Okay, I've done some more digging and did the following steps:
After adding a source in the movies view, I chose 'set content' and chose 'movie' - imdb was by default selected inside the popup box, at the bottom i chose 'scan recursively' and then hit okay. I then chose 'check for new content' - at the bottom it was acting like it was reading new information, but when I went back into library view there still is no information displayed (i have library mode set to the showcase view).
I am still doing something wrong?
Wow, I wish I could edit my posts.
Anyway, I (seem to) have everything working now.
Basically what I ended up having to do was delete the source from the list, go into settings and choose the scan library at startup option, go back and add the source and then restart xbmc.
Thanks though for the tip about scanning the nfo to the library, it was a lot easier to find help regarding my issue once i had the terminology and knew what to terms to search for.

Sorry for my stupid question. :p
I couldn't figure out how to get such information as "HIGH DEFINITION 720p Dolby Digital 5.1 Closed Caption" displayed?
Are those information stored in nfo also?
Thanks.
Sorry, I found the answer. HD flagging is still under working.
It is not supported now.

Hi.
I'm a complete noob to all this, so forgive me please for this question.
But i am just wondering how one has to structure their custom-created NFOs?
What i mean is do i have to set them up as they are here:
http://aeonproject.com/nfobin/
(NOTE: please click on one of the NFO files to see how they are structured)
OR
Can i use the very clean, neat looking structure found here:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Import_-_Export_Library#Video_nfo_Files
The latter option makes much more sense to me and is something that doesn't just look like a crowded bunch of text and code like the ones on the Aeonproject site...
So, can i use either format? Keep in mind that i do not wish to have my PC ever go online as the only internet connection available is dial-up...
So, i would be using this XBMC PC offline, all the time.
So, i am just wondering if anybody can tell me for certain that creating my own custom NFOs in such a way they will be able to use all the info locally?
Because i cant get on the internet i need a way of adding all info, thumbnails, fanart etc. locallly...
Is all this possible...Or am i asking for too much, and should i just give up on this dream??
Thanks anybody who has any ideas..
Anything would be appreciated.
Regards,
Ethan

hello i searched already in the hole aeon subforum but couldn't find something, so i think i'm right here to post my question.
is it possible to creat a additional .xml file with all the <tag>s from the .nfo file, so that the user can just choose in the aeon settings which tags he/she want to displayed on the screen?
