Wanted to make Aeon much more efficient for my xbox... modified textures.xpr and have had great results... wanted to share with all others whom use xbox :;):

Details:
------------
a) the default image (the grass bg) was at 1280 wide... given that the it was suggested that all backdrops on xbox were to be resized to 960... i thought this would be the first thing i changed.... made it 200px wide .. all black (no noticeable quality loss on my 52inch lcd ) ...

b) the navigation elements resized removed texture and smoothed out ... this has helped out alot as well

c) showcase view elements, the gradients and poster art borders were optimized and resized

d) Most of the textures where greater than 1000px .. re sized most of them to 800px or lower

Even if there were screenshots, I doubt resizing/compressing them for web display would favour a comparison. I find it hard to believe, to be honest, that significant optimisations would be invisible at 720p, but then I am cursed with eyes that can spot an errant pixel at a hundred yards. I haven't tested this myself, but if the feedback here is positive I'll be adding this to the Aeon site's mods page.

Testing this now. So far it seems to leave between 2000-3000kb more memory free on average.

Was only very occasionally getting a stall or a video wouldn't play with Alpha14. So far neither with this mod, so I'll continue testing.

the idea of this xpr is to reduce texture quality right.

i use this skin on xbox even with 1280x720 res backgrounds and never suffer and memory issues so creating a xbox only version based on this xpr would effectivly lower my picture quality for no reason so djh i sujest this be an optional mod only and not default for xbox uses.

dont get me wrong. for all people suffering problems this xpr is a great idea, but its clearly not needed for everyone.

PS - could it be xbox versions that create these mem problems. I have a 1.1 version xbox.

No, there is no visible loss in quality... This is about efficiency for the xbox... yes, aeon 14 still works on the xbox... but i made these changes to optimize performance.

for example the grass BG ... it was set to 1280wide... i noticed during startup that 'the grass' was still visible in the background during transitions of my selected backgrounds... during the fading transitions i still was able to catch a glimpse of the 'grass bg'

i thought that it would without a doubt help performance and aesthetics to switch out that image with a smaller res version... after that i changed other images and all new textures are in PNG format (lossless data compression) I'm using a 52 inch sharp aquos running the skin at 720p and have not noticed compression artifacts

sure maybe xbox never will run in tip top form with aeon... but these small changes undoubtedly increase performance

I use a 1.6 xbox.But the issue isn't the pictures not showing in the back round it is in the browse for setting"the folder back round",in skin settings.When I go to skin settings and browse for a picture to set as "folder back round image"Their is nothing.Is this suppose to be smaller size or in a diff format?

Also,TV shows is the only actual back round image that isn't working for me after I choose the Image.Sorry about the mix up.(hence the name Rookie):nod:

There won't be an image when browsing for a backdrops folder. The clue's in the name: folder. You need to browse to where your backdrops are and click OK, then it'll pull whatever images are in there. If you specifically want to assign a single image, select the non-folder option.

And let's keep this limited to feedback for this particular Aeon mod, please. There's already a thread for support.

Sorry for the double post but this is also happening to me in Back-Row.Am I suppose to be browsing for a icon or something?My images just don't show up when I try to set "folder Image"When I browse for Image back round they come up in a little box,but for folder they are simply not there.

Nice ! works spot on for me.. just the occasional glitchy image (recently added movies for example)

Anything that reduces memory usage but gives us the quality of Aeon on Xbox is a bonus.

djh_: you should deffo add this in under the xbox compat mode. All of us ancient xbox owners would continue to love you if you did lol

I have tried Aeon and I think it is STUNNING... however I am using an xbox, and I found that it was a little sluggish (this is all due to the 'classic' nature of the hardware).

I am going to give this a try for SURE! If I can't have the genuine article...

Relax guys, its only lower resized textures.
If you can spot a difference with the naked eye then you need to stop wearing magnifying glasses.

It can be taken slightly further too. I've squeezed another Mb or two out of it too.

I don't think that the quality loss is anything to worry about. I see a very noticeable difference in performance. Things are just a bit more snappy. However, I see some funky icons where the "aeon icon project" icon, the placeholder icon for the yet to be defined icons, used to come up. Anybody else see this. ???

I've got everything working pretty smoothly on the XBox without any memory issues to date. When swiping left and right through the AEON menus the FreeMem bounces between 20 and 30 MB free as the background images load. CPU bounces between 25% and 33%.

I have turned off a lot of the standard server features of XBMC so they don't use any additional memory (based on something I read elsewhere). Hopefully the list of what I've turned off might help some others having memory problems (many of the features are turned on by default).

1) I'm running at 720p (System -> Video Hardware -> Choose 720p). As djh said 1080i just aint going to work.
2) Using 720p backdrops across the board from my Photeon series of abstract photographic backdrops (http://www.teirney.net/blog/2008/07/27/version-11-photeon-backgrounds-for-xbmc-aeon-skin-released/). A single image for each of the menus.
3) UPnP Server turned off (Network -> UPnP Settings -> Unselect "Autostart UPnP Client")
4) If you are connecting to a UPnP Server, then at least consider turning off the UPnP Server on the XBox (Network -> UPnP Settings -> Unselect "Enable UPnP Server")
5) Web Server turned off (Network -> Servers -> Unselect "Enable Web Server")
6) XBox Remote Server turned off (Network -> Remote Events -> Unselect "Enable Remote Events"

Basically the only thing I have left running on the XBox is the FTP Server so I can update XBMC using the T3CH builds and update the fantastic AEON skin.

This may help some. I have had problems with video stuttering ever so slightly on a Sammy 37inch, to fix it I had to force XBMC to run at 1080i, all the problems went away :grin:

Seriously I love it. I loved what AEON 'WANTED' to do on my xbox but it was very sluggish... sometimes the picture woudln't load when I moved from one screen to the next or it would hang a bit... *Again, this is my early Generation Xbox's problem... not AEON's...

This is AS FLUID as regular AEON would be on a more powerful machine!

Love it! gonna give xtv a rest for a while and have AEON-LITE as my skin.

Hello Community,

I created another version of this optimized skin... with even better compression ratios, and still without any notifiable loss of quality, also fixed the top right hand 'Time and Date' bar ... before it was faded out ... now it's back to the classic rounded corner effect found in Aeon.

Ok so i went through the xpr file and i marked each of the textures that are corrupt. I would have fixed them myself but i'm not sure how to extract and rebuild a protected xpr. Listed below are the textures that need fixing.

I'm pretty sure that is all of them. If you get a chance to fix those will you post the new xpr file. I think all you need to post is the xpr files for people to use. Posting the entire skin isn't necessary since the only difference is the xpr file. If however you want to distribute the whole skin i suggest renaming it in the skin.xml(i renamed it to AeonLite) that way people can upload it and choose between Aeon(normal) and AeonLite. I found that to be very helpful when i was trying to debug my patches and when deciding which skin worked better with my setup. (Just a thought)

If you just rename the XPR file to xbox.xpr, you can drop it in the media folder.
Then in Settings, Theme - you can choose which XPR to use.

I was going to fix the broken images in the textures.xpr file for you (and post it here) Can you post an unprotected version of your aeonlite textures.xpr file? Also in your other post you mention that you can have multiple xpr files and then select them from the screen settings page. would it make more sense to have your texture file renamed to AeonLite.xpr and integrated directly into the normal aeon skin, that way people can just select the lite skin without deciding if they need to install the aeon full or aeon lite. It just seems more logical to me.

Well here are the uncorrupted images that are corrupt in the xpr that need to be inserted into your xpr file . Since i'm not exactly sure what you did and to what files i can't use the origional xpr to generate a fixed aeonlite xpr. So i guess you can download these put them in your source dir and regenerate your aeon lite xpr. Let me know if i can help any other way.

This mod includes:

* Smaller XPR (textures file) for better xbox compatibility (18.1 Mb)
* Fixed weather screen
* Larger font for now playing
* Larger font for bottom dialog
* Startup playlist - See AEON > Settings last two options. Playlists are stored in Q\UserData\playlists

Simply drop the xpr file to the Media folder, and the rest in the 720p folder & restart.
To select the smaller xpr file, go to Screen > Theme and select Aeon Lite (by chrisdaniels)

xpr is unprotected but i cant seem to decompile it after its compiled using XPR Express. Maybe an error with the program.

AFAIK the xbox can do hd (720p) for games and display but the xbox doesn't have enough memory/processing power to handle decoding HD encoded movies (movies in mkv, avi, divx, xvid with high source resolutions such as 720p) It can play movies in smaller resolutions and display them at 720 resolution (but it is just upscaling nothing more) Someone please correct me if i am wrong.

I just meant the interface. You can kinda do HD on Xbox if you spend too long encoding the right video in the right codec with the right settings. But even then you're in for a rough ride.

The xbox should just be used as a basic media center. If you can afford a new HD TV and the Xbox 360/PS3/Blueray box + Blue Ray discs/HD Media then you should pony out for an HTPC or build one from scratch.

The main reason for this is that you can upgrade an HTPC with stock hardware to suit your needs. With an Xbox you cant without modding it, and even then its not really worth it as you wont get the same effect.

The key components are processor & memory, which in the xbox are not designed to be replaced.

The whole reason behind this thread remember is trying to squeeze a bit more free memory so it can play standard def media & have fanart. Its near the limit!

sorry havent been on for a while. the answer is YES

did nothing different though, seems like a random glitch
pack the textues several times givin them different names then stick them all in your media folder and cycle through themes testing to see if they work.

I could use a little help, - I have lately downloaded Aeon skin light for my Xbox 1.1 and it works great, - and I do however have one issue that I hope someone can explain or resolve.
In my current setup I have the following listings in my main view:
TV shows – Music – Movies.
To each of those I have assigned a dedicated backdrop. My problem is that when I switch between my listings it seems to require a blank screen before it can load a backdrop. For example I can be on movies, and this shows the backdrop, - then I choose music (and now I get a black screen) – but as soon I go to TV shows it shows fine again.
If I start out on music then the backdrop is showing, - so it’s not because I forgot to add the backdrop. I have looked at the available memory and when navigating around I am currently using 40mb memory.
Any ideas what can cause this,,

Have you previously used Aeon? Try doing a full settings reset and set up your backgrounds again.

I found the solution; - I changed the backdrops to the format jpg, and resized them to 960x540. Apparently I where not the only one having this issue and I found a post around this issue, and luckily it worked for me...

This new "Lite" version of Aeon includes to mods to the 'Progress bar' during video playback mode and another to the full screen visualization mode ..also optimized even more textures so we xbox users can enjoy aeon in all it's glory

I use the 'full screen visualization mode' probably 70% of the time (great for parties) and I just wanted to pretty it up a bit... I used some elements from MediaStream ... such as the fonts and the 'upcoming track' feature... notice how when a vis style is 'locked' a cute lil lock icon appears to the right of the vis icon... making it really visually friendly... again these are mods i made to please myself, i don't expect everyone to like them .... enjoy...

Yes, it's best to enable force xbox mode, you probably should ... also another thing to keep in mind... i build this skin to run at 720p ... never tested it at another resolution ... planning on cleaning up details like this in the next release..

are the ratings inherited from other apps like itunes/WMP? or can you actually rate songs via xbmc? just curious.. haven't explored the 'rating' display feature

UPDATE: wow, I didn't realize how selfish I've been in optimizing this skin... I actually went through the textures one by one and realized that I really only optimized the textures that I use... I went through just now and compressed every single texture... and deleted the 'eee' textures... since this is build for 'xbox' users ... i figured it was just wasted space...

i got the textures.xpr file just under 10mb ... and still looking sharp and crisp on my 52 inch LCD TV @ 720p ...

i'm making a few more mods to this skin, and after that i'll post the updated file for download ... stay tuned

Rudeboy and xbmc01 should get together to create the ultimate xbox lite mod. Both of you have done fantastic things on different parts of Aeon, and if they could be combined into one package it'd be fantastic, notably Rudeboys movie and games sections and xbmc01's music and texture sections.

you may want to hold off on development... I will be releasing another version very soon... going to address the fked up icons and acutally compress EVERY texture.. up til now... i was only compressing the textures i used... ignored the 'wall views', etc.

i also crop 35 pixles from each side of the icons once downloaded so they appear larger on screen

You do know that you can create your own by downloading StyleBuilder from
mediaicons.org right?

If you use that software, it takes less than 10 seconds to transform a cover
into a tilted box and when you save it, the output is 512x512.

also here's a peak of the mod i'm working on... pushed down the movie info box to allow more real estate for fanart... also added a soft black border around the movie cover... i thought this worked better than the glassy thing... will release this soon ... once i've polished it up :)

Thanks for the hard work. First time question. Can you "please" put in a dvd menu button in the pop up menu when watching a streaming dvd. I need it to go back to the dvd menu and change subtitles or scenes. All there is is root menu which stops the movie and goes back to the library. Other skins like xTv have a dedicated dvd in the pop up menus when watching a movie.

I've just installed Aeon Lite and I also have to say: Amazing work!

Since I got not pretty much into Aeon so far, I've got two questions:
1) How does the selection of contextual backdrops for movies and tv series work? Aeon doesn't seem to select them from the background image folders specified in the Aeon settings, does it? Where do I have to store them?

2) TV series episode thumbs in showcase view doesn't seem to work for me. I can see episode thumbs in the listview correctly, but in the showcase view the thumb of the current selected episode is not displayed. However, the episodes left and right from the current display their thumbs. Is that a bug? Does anybody else discover that?

I use visualization screen most of the time myself, I have a huge living room that actually dwarfs my 52inch, the goal was to merely increase readability (wanted to be able to read song titles from my kitchen) ... i loved the font that MediaStream used, so I integrated that font into the aeon skin...

I had the same thought about adding album art to the 'upcoming track' ... after trying it out in a few different places... I went against it, it was just to busy.. i found my eye darting left to right with the album art... Leonardo da Vinci said it best ... "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" ... Aeon is XBMC meets Simplicity ...

i am very interested in trying AEON LITE, especially since it is trying and confusing these days on the forums to find skins being developed for XBOX optimization only.
I'm not interested in how AEON works on Linux Mac or Windows.
I just want a skin that looks way f-ing cool on my 1.6 XBOX
running on a 25" 4:3 480i SDTV with the HD/AV pack cables.
i am so bored with PMIII.
(btw, if anyone wants to PM me a suggestion for this, pretty please!)

it is nice to read a thread with so much collaboration amongst members, great work!
since this has been stickied, i assume others feel this way as well.

my only regret is following the builds all over the thread.

Great skin, loving this on my xbox. Has any one else got problems when trying to set cheats for a game or is it just me :) For me the cheat option screen is just a black box and you can't see any of the options. It's not a huge problem and a quick switch over to another skin and back again resolves the problem.

I like this mod! The xbox still is pretty impressive machine for HTPC purposes. The newer skins are mainly developed with PCs and HD televisions in mind.

What would make the lite version even more usable would be bigger bigger fonts where they are the smallest.

When I install this mod I lose the images all-together. My background turns black. I've tried it several times with no success.

Skin installed to a fresh directory (e:/apps/xbmc/skin/aeon.lite)

The non-modded aeon skin works fine.

Any idea what is wrong?

I also have the same black background issue. How do I get back to my original skin? I'm not trying to sound lazy, but I spent a could 20 minutes trying to look for the "skin" setting to go back to my default, and couldn't find it in the AEON lay out. Can someone throw me a bone?

Best I can do from memory...

Aeon has 3 bars

Middle bar has all your typical user shortcuts: videos, music, tv, pictures, etc...

Top bar has some settings like system, screen, and aeon. You need to select screen.

That's it really. You should be on the skin selection screen right away.

So I just installed the Aeon Lite skin for my Apple TV so it would run a lot better, and I noticed I'm getting these strange vertical lines on the top half of the screen JUST when I'm in Showcase view. Its right where the Gradient lets off. I'm running mod2 of aeon lite, but it just won't go away.

Any ideas, anybody?

EDIT: Okay, noticed something else. It only happens in Showcase view, but ONLY when in Library mode. Not in Showcase view in Files mode. Strange, I have to say.

Well, mine is running on the xbox. I'm not sure where you get to this menu on the pc,mac or linux version. But I just pressed down the right anolog stick on the xbox controller (like a button) and it brings up a menu to choose a different icon set. I chose a different set and it seemed to the fix the problem.

I don't remember if i had to reset after I changed it or not. But give it a try. Hope that helps.

Hi All,

I'm getting the vertical black lines issue on my Mac and my AppleTV and have traced the problems down to the showcasexxxxxxx.png files in the texture.xpr file. I've tried using XBMC skin editor on Windows to change or remove these files but everything I find is protected. Can somebody please either repost xbmc.01's folder of the files, or even better - a version that doesn't do the corruption bit?
