View Full Version : Please recommend a NAS enclosure
Hi
I got the following and I'm needing someone to recommend a Nas enclosure that I can put my internal hard drive into.
-I have 2 Netgear WGT 624 wireless routers. (One for internet on Laptop and the other for the Nas drive)
-1x 500 gig hard drive
-An Xbox media center working perfectly.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks!
sorry i should have probably mentioned my overall objective:
Ability to download videos onto the laptop, unrar and transfer wirelessly to the Nas drive, and watch through the XBMC.

I have 3 HP media vaults that haven't given me any problems at all. they have 2 bays and support 1TB drives and the OS can be hacked for added fun.
if you get the NAS bar they are like 170 bucks try www.ecost.com

what i know about NAS could be written an the back of a very small businesses card but why bother extracting rar's xbmc can play them archived
Got an old pc sitting around gathering dust? Try using NASLite (http://www.serverelements.com/). I run an old box with an 800Mhz PIII processor, 512Mb ram and this software works great. Have it hooked into my wireless router and can transfer files back and forth to it with no problems. :D

I've got the same set up, except 733Mhz running FreeNAS. I've never had a problem.
Pros:
More expandable & flexible than a dedicated NAS
Cheaper (if you don't have a computer lying around, check craigslist or your local paper for one. I got mine for $25)
Can use a PCI wireless card instead of tying up a router
Cons:
Bigger
Louder (probably)
Uses More Power

I didn't see it on the list on the wiki, and I don't have one, but boy have I been drolling over the Synology DS-207+.
Just my 2c but I would take an old machine install your drives, and install Ubuntu Server on it. You can build yourself a decent Media Server/NAS in < 2 hours. And you have full control over it.
If you are interested, I can help.
