View Full Version : Is it possible to brick an XBOX with SID?
Following the directions on Geek To Live's "Transform your XBOX..." article, I downloaded the latest XBMC and Splinter Cell game saves and bought myself an Action Replay unit.
I copied the Linux Install image over to the XBOX via the memory card function in the default Microsoft dash and then copied over the Splinter Cell game save.
Next I inserted my original Splinter Cell game and loaded the LINUX profile and went to the checkpoints which correctly booted me into UnleashX's control panel.
Being very scared and following directions to the T I created the MS backup and then the MOD Backup and then held my breath while selecting Install Softmod.
Now when I power cycle the XBOX I'm getting a screen that says my XBOX needs serviced. Is this recoverable?

Have you tried turning on the Xbox with the disc eject button? Powering the Xbox up this way should bring up the initial gamesave unleashx. Then you can try ans restore the mod backup or the ms backup.
If this does not happen/work what error code(s) are you getting?

You cannot brick an Xbox with a softmod. The actual modding of an Xbox has nothing to do with XBMC, please refer to xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com), their tutorials, FAQ, and their forums for everything about Xbox modding.
I haven't tried the Eject trick and upon further reading I also see that I should be able to boot back into Splinter Cell.
I will try this when I get back home in a couple of hours and report back on any errors. I think it offered a log file to me when I installed the Softmod.

Ok... I just re-inserted my Splinter Cell and then restored the MS Backup and verified that the XBOX would boot normally.
Next I went back in to SC and tried the Install Softmod again. It indeed is giving an error. The log file reads:
BEGIN Extracting "E:\UDATA\21585554\000000000000\Files\apps.rar"
Unrar FAILED "E:\Apps\Svs2Xbox\act". Error Code: 0
End Unrar Operation
Any ideas why I'm getting an unrar error?
First up I would recommend ditching SID. By all accounts it's more trouble than it's worth and more likely to not work as you've found.
Restore your XBox to stock, then head over to XBox-Scene.com as Gamester suggested, and look on the Forums for "Krayzie's NDure Installer". I've modded 2 XBoxes with this so far and it was a piece of cake.

Thanks for the helpful comments. If I can't get it to work with a softmod then maybe I'll consider soldiering to the motherboard... but for my first attempts, it's softmod or nothing.
An Unrar error to me would seem to mean that either the unrar executable is corrupt or that the rar file itself is.Has anyone experienced this type of error before?

I also have used the NDURE method and it worked a treat.
Softmods scare me though and i prefer a tsop flash... nothing can go wrong once it's done.

Okay... now I see that Krayzie's is another softmod... but it says I need the latest XBOX MS dash to install it and I seriously doubt that I have that as this is one of the original XBOX's (I bought early) and I've never connected to Live.

It's possible you have a corrupt file or something. Maybe try ndure or try to get a new version of SID and see if that helps.

to get the latest dash, grab a copy of any newer game that has live capabilities. It will upgrade your dash for you.
and, sorry to keep repeating this, but all this info is available over at xbox-scene.com.
