I wasn't too sure when I first saw the screens but now I've seen it in motion I quite like it.

So who's going to port it to XBMC?:;):

I think it's ok. Better than the 1st gen that's for sure. I mean, that looked quite cool but imo it had serious usability issues.
But I guess I don't really get why they seem to want to reinvent the weel with this. I don't get why they don't just extend on MCE.
The avatar type thingies remind me of a certain other console though

I don't think it's a big risk as long as you don't literally rip the resource and just recreate it. I don't think Blackbolt ever got into any trouble for the MC360 skin.

Very true. Perhaps the bigger issue would be that the MS version's still WIP. It should change quite considerably before it launches.

From the looks of it, Microsoft is going for a Web 2.0 look, still a bit empty, but guess that will be solved when themes are enabled.

What I've heard is that Microsoft was bugging Team Blackbolt about MC360, he had to prove that every graphic was all own made.

Looks to me like Microsoft borrowed a lot of ideas from Apple TV (http://www.apple.com/appletv/) and Apple FrontRow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_Row) for this 'new' concept.

'New Xbox Experience' Dashboard In-Depth Video Walkthrough:

More (different) YouTube videos:

I for one think that Apple did a better job with Apple TV than Microsoft did with this new GUI skin for their Xbox360.

Hey, I already mentioned this here (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34900)! Oh well, someone better delete that thread then,

Yeah, it looks a little to me like they taken some insperation from "Mii-space" (sorry dunno what its actually called, not a Wii owner) and a little bit of "Home" (mind you Sony probably wont finish that... ever) as well as some from a certain Homebrew Media Centre, that we know MS have kept there eyes on...

So who's going to port it to XBMC?:;):

Whoever is crazy enough to port is gonna spend a lifetime on re-creating those avatars.
Also allot of features are not available in XBMC, you kinda end up with a pretty empty user-interface.

i seriously hope you're gonna be able to choose which skin to use >_< becuase i woudlnt wanna bloat my 360 with that :(:(
I hope the same, you can choose between this and the old version, seeing that's more stylish compared to these concept pictures, but I'm curious to the features that come with the 'New Xbox Experience', from the looks of it most of them are probably only for the USA...

I was kinda referring to the My Xbox screenshot (http://www.aeonproject.com/dropbin/xb4.jpg), if you use that as menu/Home.xml, I assumed you don't need the menu in the top-left of the window, seeing most of the content is already in My Xbox.
But you can leave My Xbox away from the menu and only use the menu options that apply to XBMC, like Games and Videos, still a bit short content-wise, but you can add more options to that, like Scripts, Settings etc.

Wow, Glad someone brought this one up.

Honestly.. I am currently in two minds about it. One part of me says hey they have added a few things that look to be nicked from XBMC or any other media app for that matter. ie the scrolling views. It would be neat if when connected to your own network it scanned for artwork like xbmc for sure.

The other part of me thinks, oh god now my kids are gonna want to play with my 360 and cause the ROD much sooner!

Seriously though... I for another, hope that this interface can be dressed up a bit more for the more adult amongst us or left with the option that we can still use the old interface which in my eyes is a damn sight better placed for a front room media center and not a kids bedroom.

Yea..wat's up:P

I am not dead.
I don't come here any more, because I don't have Xbox anymore, I have moved on to 360 and enjoying the games.

Anyway, you guys must be aware of the 360's dashboard, the Blades.
Team Blackbolts created a version of the Blade for XBMC called MC360.

To tell you the truth, I really hated the Blade, I won't say I hate it, I will just say, I am so freaking bored of it! Especially when you compare it to PS3's menu theme.

ANYWAY...onto the subject.
I dunno what's in you guys mind, but in my mind. I say:
Why Microsoft couldn't allow you guys xbmc for 360!? XBMC is truely an awesome program.

E3 2008, Microsoft announced that, there will be a new dashboard redesign.
It will look exactly like XBMC theme feature.

With the scrolling menu, ability to burn 360 games to the hdd and play them, plus you can view the games boxart on hdd just like you view them on xbmc. The interface looks similar to most xbmc themes, with the transparent look, and scrolling menu.

I just wanted to know how you guys feel about Microsoft using you guys idea.
Microsoft really did it, stole Mii's idea, Home's feature and xbmc theme design.

if you prove they stole it from us, then sue them ;)

xino
2008-07-17, 00:15
yea you can't sue.
I dunno nothing about xbmc development, with all these sdk, devs, kits etc.
But you guys started developing the thing on Microsoft's Xbox.

I am sure they stole the idea, because they even used the games library, and menu left/right scrolling design.

All I am just saying is, how do you guys feel that Microsoft used xbmc idea to integrate with the new design?
honoured!? ripped off? p-ssed off?

Competes2win
2008-07-17, 02:01
I'm not sure how much is actually stolen directly from xbmc... I mean a lot of web design these days looks the same, what with the reflections, icons, scrolling views and all. And as posted previously, many of the media centers have similiar views including microsoft's MCE which I'm sure there are some older xbmc copies running around. The biggest and most obvious rip off though is the new avatars... of course ripping off from the wii's Mii's, which nintendo was probably originally inspired by the ability to build characters in games.

As for my opinion I for one actually like this new interface as I have never ever been a fan of the blades. The ability to rip the games onto the harddrive is a very nice feature... a feature of course that we have had for quite some time. however this is unexpected in my opinion because I can only imagine the sharing that will go on between friends in order to save from buying all those games... I'm sure perhaps there is a security measure on this, anyone hear about anything of this nature?

anyhow I kinda like the changes.

Were it not for Apple, we'd still be in the interface Stone Age. Almost everything that's happened in UI design over the last decade has been somehow derived from designs like OSX, iMac and more recently iPod. If they're not moaning about it, I doubt we have a right to.

MS has very basic GUIs so they can be used by all ages. They are not "fancy" at all, by design. That interface is nothing special IMO - very utilitarian with a little glitter to make it look 3D

The only difference is that Xerox thought UI:s and mouses was an stupid ass idea and didnt even intend to let it hit the market :P Apple was pretty much given it by the big bosses of Xerox :P

Microsoft on the other hand said they were gonna make apps for macintosh instead they stole everything and didnt release a single app :P

doesn´t matter how they obtained it, they still copied it just as much as MS. Ever looked at Windows 1.0? Apple stole the dock from Windows

i like the new interface.
i like the sparse design
i like the coverarts
i like how everything just loads faster and seems to navigate more fluidly
(blades can be a pain when a game is running or you have lots of items installed)

i laugh at the avatars.

and: there is no way around it anyway...

the new dashboard is not an option. its a mandatory replacement. so no, you wont be able to switch back to blades.
i didnt like the loud screaming colors anyway. plus it always looked cluttered to me.

I don't really see how extracting assets from illegally obtained software is a path to inspiration. You've got screenshots, you've got videos, and soon you'll have hands-on experience - what more do you need? I've never quite got the whole thing about assets having legal protection while the design itself doesn't. Surely Microsoft's beef is with the cloning of its IP, not the manner by which it's done. Presumably, the deciding factor is what will stand and fall in court.

Ok guys here's the dealio with what happened to me concerning MC360.

Microsoft's European legal team contacted me via email with a 20 page pdf document that detailed every usage of their xbox 360 logo and the word 'xbox' on my website and in the skins screenshots. They asked that I immediatly take the site down till I could make the necessary changes. I acted on that immediatly and took it down. The didn't want their 'x' on anything, which is why I changed it to the 'bolt' logo. I changed all instances of 'xbox' like 'xbox live' and 'xbox 360' to 'xbmc live' and 'xbmc 360'.

Once I had done this, they approved it and allowed me to continue aswell as sending me a very nice letter of approval of what I was doing. I did not have to prove I had made all my textures myself, infact my original 'x globe' was made by myself, but because it was 'in the image' of their original x globe logo for the 360, they wouldn't allow it.

My advice to anyone making this new Xbox experience dash is to make all the textures yourself, make them different enough that they aren't mistaken for being ripped and also don't use any official logos, even if you do create them yourself.

So there you have it, the actual true story of what happened when Microsoft served notice to Team Blackbolt back in March 2006. I'd also like to point out that while I don't share Jezz_X's entire thoughts on the new dash, I don't deem it so great that I'd drop everything I'm doing to re-create it, but good luck to whoever tries it as Team Blackbolt won't be going there.

It's now complete
wanna try it out?

download and unrar to your skindir
I've used aeon as a base so if you want to switch back to another skin select Appearance and choose your skin instead.
