Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the whole reason your "team" kept this skin under wraps was to avoid premature hype? Posting half of a screenshot and advertising a month in advance seems to be a little hype builder to me. Just my two cents. Looking good though.

Read the posts elsewhere. The reason they kept it under wraps was so they wouldn't get tons of feature requests and change recommendations until after it was pretty much set. I'm in awe that people complained so much when they didn't post any info and now someone is commenting when they do release it.

Can't we just have a love fest and all just be excited for the next month? :)

Dunno, but unless the skin is spectacular I probably won't use it since it feels like I have been b**ch-slapped by the developers. If they wanted to keep it secret then they should never have told anyone anything about it until it was finished. Instead they are like someone teasing you with candy. OHH you think its pretty and tasty?? well to bad you can't have it. Nor can you know anything about it for months and months.

I have no problem with not releasing something till its done, but then don't be releaseing teaser screens either. And partial screens at that. Either be like aeon and give updates frequently so we can play with it and help find bugs and give suggestions, or don't tell us ANYTHING at all about it.. even that it exists until you are done with it. Not something in the middle that just causing fustration with the users.

Looking great guys, glad to see the hard work is paying off :)

As a sidenote, some people are really taking this WAY too serious. It's a freakin skin people, get over yourselves! I'm not saying this to devalue the hard work put into it at all, because it looks great, but after all it's a skin and not a matter of life and death.

All this whining about being teased and telling people what they should and should not publicize on THEIR skin before release is ridiculous. You didn't make it, they did. And you didn't pay them anything, nor did you make any contribution whatsoever. So they are free to do whatever the hell they want with it. Some of you act like you are entitled to something. You're not. To think that for some reason you can dictate what the creators can or can't do with their creation is foolish and arrogant. If you're getting frustated by teaser pics then I hope you never have to deal with real world issues.

That's the first and final thing I have to say about it.

Dude, its not the developers fault that you can't control yourself, thats something for you to take care of... Its kinda sad admitting on a forum like this that you can't help but get swollowed up in 'hype'.

Hype is something that you control yourself, you're the one who's responsibility it is the way you act, not the people making the thing you're excited for.

I advise you stay off the sugar and stay away from bright colours until you can learn to stop over stimulating yourself.

Apparently you have never seen the affects premature and unmanaged hype can have on products.

Giving people teasers early on in any product and then not following up with any information is bad because it generates alot of excitement, but then the excitement dies and when the product finally comes out no one is really excited about it anymore.

Giving teasers and information consistently since the first teaser lets the hype and user interest continue throughout the development of the product. It also managed expectattions so that users aren't expecting more than they are getting.

I have no problem with them keeping it all to themselves during the development. But after showing stuff.. then complaining and saying they weren't showing anything, and then showing something, and then once again giving almost no information all they are doing is generating negative hype which will only hurt the reception their skin gets.

I don't care what htey do really. I will end up using what ever works best for my needs anyhow, but figure it would be good for everyone to know they are doing some damage and even if I'm the only one that says anything about it I'm sure there are others that don't like what is going on.

But, to each their own. I probably won't use the skin for this reason. Unless is so amazing to overcome the negative feelings I already have about it. And if its that great, when then more power to them and congrats on making the skin. If it comes out and isn't that great... then I will be wondering why it was such a secret.....

As far as I remember the post at the top of this thread is the first image we have ever released of the skin so not sure what you mean about showing and complaining etc?

There are some images kicking about of fluid but that was Emilio's project that he started before we began work on the skin and the skin we will be releasing has very few (if any) of those elements in it.

It's been kept under wraps to prevent lots of people chiming in and saying how they would like to see it developed. I know that gives us fewer opinions to base our decisions on but it also means we have the chance to develop something consistent that works properly and follows the goals we set out for the project.

We're in the final tidy and polish stages of development and will hopefully be able to share some more details on the skin very shortly

Ohhhhh that made me laugh so much.

1) You must have me mistaken for someone else if you think I care whether you use it or not....the negative feelings are your own for you to play with. Do us a favour "Mr 2 posts" and keep your feelings inside your head!

2) As Skunk has mentioned mate...this is the only image we have posted for this project since it's creation and, therefore, your concern about constant "we posted this....oh no we didnt" is completely unjustified and negates any credible argument you have.

3) Teasers are a natural part of the marketing process. Let's follow your flawed logic through for a second. You rent out a movie for the night. On there it shows a trailer for a movie not hitting the screens for another 7 or 8 months. Are you telling me that you're not going to the cinema to watch that movie because of any negative feelings you might have after seeing the trailer and having to wait so long. "Oh my goodness...why show me that 8 months before release...I have SO many bad feelings, I'm not going to watch that movie now...stuff 'em"

4) You want information? Good...you're not getting any. We're going to tell everyone but leave you out.

5) Stop Crying

6) We dont care...you're not paying for it, contributed nothing to it, so stop yer babbling and take off your flowery shirt!

7) We dont care AND stop crying AND take off that shirt...it's too girly for you!

Bye then!

I still can't believe boodai posted JUST to whine in this thread. As the skin developers said, they don't care if you use the skin or not. Why would you waste your time posting in a thread about something that you'll never use anyway? It'd be like me going on the Media Portal forums and throwing a fit because they're doing something I don't like, even though I have no need for their product.

Get over yourself and stop thinking that anyone cares about your whine other than you.

Skin teaser looks great and I love Doctor Who, to bad last episode of this season was last week.

No matter what everyone says about the 'hype', it's not like your buying yourself a new car or a cinema ticket, it's free for own usage, open source, if you don't like it, there plenty of other skins that will satisfy your hunger, but sounds like Fluid (if that's still is going to be the name) is made for the community, by the community, to advance the skin experience.

So I'm really looking forward to the result of this skin.

O_O This is great!

I was worried that since The Devil's concepts were not being followed, the skin would not come out well, but clearly the Project Fluid team really "gets it" when it comes to design. In my opinion, this is the only skin that can compete with Aeon. I can't wait to see some more screenshots.

Too bad about no 4:3 in the initial release, but I guess you can't have everything. :P

Only skin that can compete with Aeon? lol how do you know? so far I've seen one half of one screenshot.

Two reasons:
1. The screenshot looks pretty damn impressive and shows attention to detail.
2. The skin has very talented people working on it.

No need to get snarky anyway. Skin preference, like many other things, is subject to a person's opinion. If he feels it can compete with Aeon, that's his opinion. If your opinion is different, that's fine too.

I've yet to see a skin that can match the user experience I get with Basics-101 to be honest, that skin is just very cool. Works great with mouse or a remote (try Aeon with a mouse), has a nice contrast so you can read everything on almost any screen regardless of real resolution and just works. Irrelevant in this thread here of course, just wanted to chime in that looks aren't anything and I really am looking forward to the usability aspect of this skin here.

MikeBeecham
2008-07-15, 20:48
can I just chip in here and mention a couple of things

1) Design
We're releasing this skin, knowing full well that not everyone is going to like this skin...and thats ok. We're not vying to get prizes for most intuitive design, most amazing-looking skin, or even the most desired skin on the XBMC platform. It's a skin that has a design which the team feel is true to what we wanted to get out of the project when it was started.

2) Competitiveness
Can I just stop ANY flaming or comments right now about trying to compete for top spot. We're not! period! This is a skin designed by the community for the community. Again, it's a skin that some people will like...others wont. We're not trying to poach users from others skins. To try anything similar to this would just be plain dumb. If you like Aeon, then carry on using Aeon, if you like Basics (and let's face it...who doesn't!) then carry on using Basics. If you try this skin and like it, then great...we achieved something...if not, then we created a skin for the xbmc project that no-one uses...it's an achievement in itself and we're happy!

3) Functionality
We like it! Plain and simple! We like the functionality that this skin has, and have tried to make it as functional as we can. If you dont like it cause it's not like Aeon or Basics...then kinda, well, tough. Use what is comfortable for you.

4) End result
If you like the skin when you see it...then great, we'll be pleased that you did. If you like using it and you're dropping other skins to use it whilst the novelty factor is still there, then we'll lift up a beer in your name and maybe do a small dance in your honour. if you dont like it, then hey....now you'll have something to blog about and complain how the world is not right for some reason.

In essence, I guess I'm saying that we made the skin for YOU! if you like it then great, if you dont like it then dont go flaming about how this dont work like Aeon or that dont work like Basics

it's all good!

djh_
2008-07-15, 21:11
What he said.

The skinning engine covers more than enough ground for every skin to have its own turf, so where's the competition? I'm willing to bet the XBMC userbase is pretty evenly split between the major players, so distinct are the plusses and minuses of each one. The scene's all the better for it, too.

Yes this is how I feel also. There are all these flashy skins which looks so good but when I use it for awhile I always find something wrong with them from a usuability stand point. Thats why I always end up back with Basics-101. It doesn't look great graphically but its so streamlined for my needs. If Fluid can strike a balance between looks an usability without it being too complex it has a good chance of being my default skin.

No pocky pocky MikeBeecham... that post was so so needed... that's what grabs me about this the prospect of this release... user input was cut to a minimum, so you guys could concentrate on making the skin exactly the way it should be... it's not always nice having people telling you this and that, almost forcing you to constantly change you base idea about what you wanted from the skin... as for the top spot on my list... it's always got to be windows vista (coz i have to use it everyday at work, LOL!)...

nyways... coming soon will soon be arrived... so we're preparing for ur project...

How's the issue with bug testing?
You guys done a thoroughly bugtesting yourselves during this development, or is it meant to be mostly bug tested by the public to get it released as soon as possible?

Of course there's always gonna be some bugs here and there, just wondering if we can expect an version to perhaps try to directly replace your standard skin.
Or if it's just more of an novelty item until the most major bugs are found and fixed, like skins tend to be for the first period after their birth.

I don't wish to overstep my bounds but yes, it should be reasonably usable on first release. I don't believe there'll be anything missing, but one can never tell until it's tested very widely.

And ofcourse there'll be bugs on release, and things that aren't 100% polished, but the team have been working hard at getting it as ready as possible for release.

I must say it's nice to get some top quality skins coming out that seem a bit more 'mature'... DJH started it off with Aeon, and now this skin looks like it will be another to add to XBMC's 'second coming'.

I think the gradual increase of a 2nd (?) generation of skins will help to bring XBMC to the attention of more people than ever before, so kudos to you guys for helping in bringing that about :)

ok, I guess thats fair enough....youve all waited long enough, so here's a screenie for you guys to whet your appetite with:

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/6131/screeniepz7.png

Now, to be fair we did have to learn how to use MS Paint in conjunction with an xml coder. We've spent a LONG time working on the above for you, and overall we're really pleased with it...I think it represents the year-long effort by many people quite well.

In terms of user interactivity, you can easily change that shade of purple to any of the basic 16 colours that are available to you free of charge....we're givers..we like to do these things for you...you can thank us later!

Also you'll notice the clock in the corner....that actually comes in both digital and analogue formats, because we already know what you want before you demand it like it's a right of yours to have something for free. Again, just because we like to give!

Also, you'll notice a subtle use of highlight lines in the actual screenshot. These are actually guides that position a very high-tech focus bar for you to use, so that you can access your media, your way, your coffee in your style, etc, etc...you get the drift.

Finally, we also included an interactive ordering slip as part of the settings screen. This is essentially another high-tech not-yet-seen bit of techno wizardry. In essence (I dont want to bore you with low level techie details), it is a simple interactive form that allows you, the user, to be able to let us (the team) know what other elements you demand for free. You see, as a team we understand how uncompromising you are. We understand that despite constant reminders that it's for free, blah blah, you'll still make demands of "i want this", "i want that" like you're ordering dinner from your moms, expecting clean laundry in your drawers upon demand etc...so we thought we would make it easy...

So, in essence, instead of spending your obviously-important useful time spamming threads with "I want this", "I want that"...you can download the skin for free upon release (at no cost to you, I might add!), play with it, test it, then let us know what is missing or how we can help improve it.

Again....it's all because we love you and we're givers. It's just how we roll!

Will we be able to change that blue part to other colors though? I'd like to keep the purple. I like purple. And I like blue too. But I like dark blue better.
So if you could go ahead and make that blue a darker color blue...that would be great.

I remember watching with interest your email some months ago as you posted a very inspiring "lets all pull together to create something amazing for the community" message. Whats happened since then?

I don't see how it can be shear weight of demands placed on you - you have largely stuck to yourselves, only surfacing every now and again to drop a tidbit of info and then following up very quickly with a scathing putdown whenever people start to get excited.

I don't see what the problem is.

On a generic level you can develop something in two ways:

1. Incremental development. The team make one little piece, shows it to users, users have their say, team goes back to finish the piece.
2. Don't release anything until you feel it is finished according to your goals.

There is no right or wrong method. The first one is excellent if you have a general design, but you might not be sure of certain features etc. The second one on the other hand is perfectly fine if you believe you have a clear goal and design and you are of strong belief to release a first version according to your design.

Method 2 was clearly advertised here no?

1. Having people continuously asking for progress is like having a bunch of kids in the back seat yelling "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?". Beyond comprehensive annoyment.
2. The team has a strong belief that their design is the way to go. If they would release bits and pieces all the time there would be an endless amount of thread with suggestions and whines about things. But suggestions are good? Yes, but they want to release something according to THEIR belief and design FIRST. THEN you can clearly have how many opinions you want.

On a closing note. Begin able to use sarcasm properly is actually mature. Not understanding it when it gets thrown at you when deserved is not however.

UND3R ACHI3V3R
2008-07-28, 11:40
If the sarcasm remark is directed towards me you need to know I am fully aware of his intentions, my statements after the fact are simply my way of ignoring stupidity. There really isn't a call for such behavior when in most cases EVERY skin has people asking for more information.

phunqe
2008-07-28, 12:38
Again, most other skins have started like "Hey, here is a concept, what do you think?" and then gradually evolved into a skin, with the author(s) posting stuff as development progresses and incorporating suggestions etc.

What is so hard to understand with the fact that someone might want to do something their own way first and then release it? If that path has been choosen, posting progress reports with examples etc as you go along would only help to derail you from the original plan.

There would be whines in any case.

Current situation: No progress reports or teasers are released -> Whines.
Developers do their thing, but still release progress reports/treasers: People post their suggestions and/or flames. Suggestions/flames are ignored -> Whines.

Either way the developers get crap. Let them do it the way they want. End of story.

Also, sarcasm doesn't seem so stupid when you're in the driver's seat, trust me. Sarcasm is usually the least you want to inflict on back seat drivers.

Isn't this going to be released at the start of August? I don't see what the problem is to release information at so late in the game when most content is set in stone. Isn't this how most products are released build excitement and get ppl's attention just before a release. I can understand if the theme was going to be released like 1 year from now and content is subject to change and you want to focus strictly on development. Unless your motive is to surprise people or lower their expectations but I don't see how releasing some info early is going to dampen it if anything it will make ppl more excited.

Anyway don't take it the wrong way I'm sure I'll take a look at it when it gets released.

What needs remembering here is that the people asking for screens and getting frustrated by the lack of them, no matter how stubborn or disrespectful that might seem, are your friends, not your enemies. The mere fact that they're posting in this thread means they're excited by what you're doing, which is ultimately the most you could hope for. Their assistance, furthermore, as a focus group and as bug-testers, has proven increasingly invaluable to me, though I can't speak for others. I do know that software companies spend millions gathering the same kind of feedback.

Hesitant as I am about wading in with my two cents, some of the recent posts here made me wince a little. This looks like a solid, popular skin, and of course it's the author's prerogative to show as much or as little as they like. That said, a few of the shots fired here seem aimed squarely at the foot. It seems a shame to let hostility creep in so close to its release.

MikeBeecham
2008-07-28, 14:59
You're all 100% correct, and DJH you already know that I respect your honesty and two-cents...constructive criticism is always appreciated in my house mate...you know that.

With regards to the sarcasm, etc you have to understand a couple of things, which I would like to share.

So often I see threads started with "What about this concept" and "would this make a good skin", etc. These are great because it shows that the community is really wanting to make a difference to the platform that all we know and love. I think it's excellent to see people taking thier own time to create something that others might like to use.

Also, I see quite a negative flip-view (singling NO-ONE out) where they sit around waiting for something new to arrive, for them to use free of charge. This is also fine because this is what the community is set up for...we all pull together, etc etc.

What gets me riled, however, is when numerous posts are made before something even gets out the front door. I have seen too many times when screenies are made, when those that contribute nothing to the process are quick with their criticism or comment...we would like to see this, we want that, etc. Very rarely does anyone take into consideration the sheer amount of personal time and effort that is poured into something that will undoubtedly be hacked up for mods the moment it's released...this is the reason why we never released screens or gave too much information...we didnt want the forums spammed with "I wants".

My post last night, albeit sarcastic in nature, was meant to show my frustration at those kind of people.

This will probably be my final point on the matter...I'm sorry that you think you have rights to more information, or that it's the done thing to give you more information, but it's just not..okay? You dont get a right to more information because you never contributed anything to the process. I have a shed load more people who have svn access than are in the team, because they all contributed to the project in some way or another.

If all you're doing is checking forums threads for freebies and more information on any upcoming project, then NO...you dont get more info or screenies just because you want them. You get to sit and wait for it to be released...then you get to use it or not use it, depending on your fancy.

I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, and I'm sorry if it cuts down the userbase of the skin when it's released. Personally? I dont give an arse if you use it or not. We started out making a skin for the community. It's taken nearly a year of our time up...EVERY DAY, and we'll be using it. If you want to use it then great...if you have improvements...even better (we love them!!), but if you dont use it I'm not going to cry myself to sleep.

My team have worked bloody hard to produce something for you for free...at our expense and at no cost to you. We're damn proud of this skin, whether you want to use it or not...Is a little patience too much to ask?

No, I didnt think so!

Mike, with all do respect, you are egging on the problems. If you don't want people to ask for more screen shots then just simply don't mention it until it is ready. You guys mentioned from the beginning that you wanted to build this your way from the ground up and I respect that. But you have to expect people to ask for more when you give them a small taste. It's a lot like some babe flashing a boob from a distance and then telling you you have to wait to see more. :oo:

I am part of what I hope and suspect is the silent majority of xbmc users who are quietly waiting to give this new skin a run when it's released.

Chances are that for every person who has felt the need to have any sort of whinge, that there are 10, 20 or maybe 100 of us patiently sitting by, appreciating the fact that another skin for a great piece of software that also happens to be free will be upon us soon...

I personally found the MSPaint screenshot hilarious. Some of you are taking an XBMC skin WAY too seriously. Sit back, relax, and be happy when it comes out. Until then is it really necessary to flame each other?

Additionally, Mike (and others, I assume?) are making this in their free time and charging you exactly 0 (insert your currency of choice here) for it. If you don't like the responses he's given to this point, then go make your own skin or simply don't read this thread. No need to get your undies in a bunch over it. :)

I've been quiet through all of this until now but I've got to throw my 2 cents in....

Mike, most of the problems in this thread are a from you guys offering up some little tidbit and then expecting people to not want more. If you didn't want to be bothered then you should never have posted anything at all. Once the post was up, you honestly expected people to not read it and want more info? That's being rather naive don't you think?

I am sure this skin is going to be a beautiful thing with as much hard work and time invested that you guys have put forth. But honestly, you need to get a grip. There will be people who want something for nothing, there will be people who think you should listen to their wants and put it in your skin. It's a fact of life, deal with it gracefully, not childishly. Don't open a door then expect people to not walk in while you're busy cleaning house.

I for one am willing to wait till release to see this, mainly so I can make my decision to use or not use based on the finished design. But don't get mad because others want to know more now. That's simply how society these days works. People want it NOW, not later. And if you can't deal with that then you guys should never have started any discussion of this in a public forum. You hand the monkeys a banana and then don't expect them to eat it and want more???? :D

Hehe, my thoughts exactly.

The beast is almost upon us and I'm sure Mike will be releasing some more screenshots very soon so there'll be something else to focus on - the home screen might not be quite up to the standard of the MSPaint screenie as that was more like a preview of where we'd like to get to when the technology catches up with our imaginations

Very nice looking. I especially like the blade/sub-blade system on the main menu. That Home page is lush - definitely the highlight from this first batch of screens. Reminds me quite a bit of Vision, which isn't a skin I'd use personally - but really damn slick overall. Not a fan of the movie views, though. Be interesting to see how the dark transparencies hold up against black backgrounds, but I'm sure you've tested it to buggery. Looking good. I personally like both the homescreen and the movies view that shows the info on it.. I like the scrolling icons on the bottom with the large dvd cover on top. Nice. And I really enjoy the big lettered font. And I agree that it has a very, very Vision(2) esque feel to it.

Funny how all the skins just kind of evolved together... Poor old blackbolt and his Ellipsis project... seems as if that skin will be a bit behind the times whenever it comes out... perhaps he can hail it as 'retro' and bring back the 'good ol times' of xbmc before all of this media centric glitz and glamor...

I was definitely thinking that the AEON backdrops wouldn't work... I'm not sure about the horizontal layout but judging by the design, i bet the skin by default uses backdrops similiar to the red theatre seat backdrop and art similiar to that music panel you see... more along the lines of pm3 I suppose. All of which I think would look stellar.

What the hell is wrong with you people? People ask stupid questions and he responds with something that most of us wouldn't find offensive at all. It's like you're all looking for something to attack him over. I deal with end-users myself and it gets seriously frustrating. Yes, some comments come across as harsh, but this is the Internet: if you can't handle them go to the Nickelodeon site or something. How do you people manage to read spiff's responses when you can't even handle Mike's?

Here's a tip before anyone else posts stupid questions in a thread:
READ THE THREAD.

More importantly, look to see if the specific question has been answered already. If it has, don't ask. If it hasn't, then ask yourself if it's something that REALLY needs asking.

Now, can we stop the petty flamewar? No need to freak out every time someone posts.

Hehe, this is why I love forums and online communities - theres no shortage of village idiots to keep the rest of us entertained.

As far as our team having a 'nasty attitude' - that's just our spiky exterior (Mike), don't worry we also have a soft and cuddly underbelly (well JustMeD's belly anyway) and a flighty air of confusion (my contribution).

It's understandable that people have frustrations and attitudes when taking part in a discussion on something that no-one can actually get their hands on yet and I wouldn't have expected anything different. Things will hopefully be more interesting when the skin is actually released as their will be something tangible to actually talk/moan/whinge/laugh about and that's what I'm really looking forward to.

The skin won't be to everyone's liking and there will be things that people want added and other stuff that they would like changed and the skin will evolve based on that feedback but I'm pretty sure that the initial release should please some people and that's why we've put the effort in

Ok, look...it was not my intention to do anything other than bat back at the people that start with either unnecessary comments, or rude comments.

Let's draw a line under this as I AM actually a nice person...ask my wife and kids...they will tell you.

So...everything from this point on is in the past, let's focus on the community and the skin, which is why we started all this in the first place and get to loving each other again. No flaming, no smart-ass comments from either party. You're either going to love the skin or hate it..and thats cool.

On release, we would appreciate feedback as we've never done this before (I know I havn't), as well as recommendations or improvements.

That's all from me for now!!

I don't think anyone is really expecting it to be released on August 1st, based on comments that have been made from the team to date. My take (my hope?) is that it will be released sooner in August rather than later, once you are happy that it is ready for public consumption.

I would respectfully suggest that the earlier the team can set a public launch date the better, rather than waking up one morning and there it is.

I don't think I could bare the suspension

Ahhh it wont be today I'm afraid. What I CAN tell you is that we're aiming to have something for release on the 8th August 2008, so keep an eye out for that. If I'm being honest, what we're trying to do is get a whole raft of different things sorted right now...such as a releasable skin, website and decent hosting sorted out.

The skin is 98% there I would say, with tweaks and refinements taking place before release. It WILL still have a few bugs and it WILL have some areas for improvement, but overall I think it's in a state that can be given over to you guys.

In 2012, 45% of all TVs worldwide will be HD-ready (9% in 2007).

Same over here, HD is really in it's infancy her too content-wise. Just recently a fair amount of channels finally switched to 16:9 broadcasting  After, what, 20 years since widescreen was introduced?
The european football championship was broadcasted in HD though, resulting in a lot of HD screens being bought. I just recently got myself an HD screen, which I would have done much sooner if more content was available in HD. The people are waiting for more HD content, the networks are waiting for more people getting HD screens first :rofl:
With which I btw don't want to imply skins should be restricted by SD compatibility.

djh_
2008-08-03, 20:22
It's completely unrealistic and regressive to expect a modern UI to shackle itself to backwards compatibility. I don't expect Blu-ray discs to run on my Dreamcast, just as I don't expect Crysis to run to my calculator. XBMC is not Xbox Media Center anymore, nor are SD or 4:3 considered current-generation tech. Anyone unfortunate enough to be lumped with those should be grateful for every ounce of support they receive from XBMC and its artists, but expect nothing. Furthermore, I pity any skin that mistakedly tries to satisfy both crowds, however noble that might be.

ultrabrutal
2008-08-03, 20:42
So the target for XBMC now is mobile phones? Ok just use PM3 in 4:3 or have some black borders. ;)

When I think of all the people I know. I can actually only find my own folks as the only ones with a 4:3 TV. My guess would be that it's less than 5% who still have 4:3 TV's when not regarding the older generation (who will never use XBMC anyways) - but even my grandmother and my wife's have 16:9 TV. Ofcourse this differs from country to country.

Oh yes, and what djh said ;)

MikeBeecham
2008-08-03, 20:47
Duncan, whilst I understand your sentiments I also have to disagree with you in some respects. Obviously, I cant argue with you about Aeon, but for MediaStream it's about trying to encompass and provide for as much of the community as we can. I dont want to exclude a portion of the community, just because they cannot afford a certain peice of hardware.

Just because they have less money than other people, does that mean that they should not expect to use something that they COULD use if people provided support for them? No, I dont think so. I think your argument about blu-ray is flawed, only because it's a different animal completely. Blue-ray was NEVER designed for the dreamcast, whereas XBMC WAS designed for 4x3. To not consider it's foundational roots is to deny the very platform that it originated from in my opinion. In using your argument, should we say that because there are now more widescreen televisions that square ones, TV Companies should never broadcast content in 4x3? No, not at all.

It that warrants someone's pity for wanting to serve the wider audience, then so be it. However, Razorfish set out to provide for the community, not a single part of it.

djh_
2008-08-03, 21:12
I'm not denying the origins of XBMC or your right to cater to the bottom end of its technical hierarchy. I'm disputing the assumption that artists on the forefront of UI development should cater for that entire spectrum simply because it exists.

I'll admit, though, that my rant was somewhat out of context. It was my assumption that someone had kicked off about SD support when, in fact, they were just happy about it. More the fool me.

I guess it's a "suck it and see" thing!

Yes, as I said before as well; No matter what certain opinions might be, you have done a great job and the open source community would be nothing without commited people like you.

I think if the skin requires time off work to set up the I would be very disappointed

haha, well depends how nice it handles squished to 4:3 (initially) - i won't be able to help myself but tweak it. this skin pretty much the decider between plex/boxee for me and quite a few others atm - been drooling over it since the initial fluid screenshots.

plus a nice skin is a good excuse to reorganise the library and track down some nice coverart too, and it's motivated me to finally finish my new mediadb

Looking forward to it Mike and I'm sure it will be fine!

I'm just hoping the humble Xbox can run it smoothly! ;)

It should be able to Geeba...I have a version 1.0 box and it's pretty much as smooth as you want it to be on there.

Mike rough idea on how much memory was left while your running it?

Geeba,

I dont have that information to hand, I'm afraid.

2008-08-06, 12:43
Geeba, it all depends on what screen you are looking at or what media you are playing. We've done a lot of memory testing and I'm pretty confident that we've ironed out all the memory problems we had initially as I haven't had any memory related issues in the last few months using it on the xbox.

Thanks fellas! really glad your testing on the Xbox and not just the "lob in some more Horse Power to cover it" platforms.

What you will have to accept and appreciate thought Geeba, is that the xbox as a media center is on it's way out...most development now is for Linux, Mac and (to a lesser degree) windows. This is the future.

the Xbox will probably never have enough power to compete, going forward because it cannot handle High Def capably enough. You only have to see the latest implementation of fanart, etc to see that the xbox struggles.

That said, and with the best will in the world, Razorfish (certainly for the foreseeable future) will attempt to create skins that cater for both...EVERYTHING we do has to be for the community, and in a manner that the entire community can use. As long as I have breath in my body, I will not exclude a portion of the community that makes xbox what it is, simply because they do not have, or cannot afford a certain piece of hardware.

Does that mean, however, that we will ALWAYS have the xbox as a media center? No! I can easily see a time when the xbox is defunct, especially in line with the speed technology is moving. However, until that time comes we're going to cater for the community in whatever way is both feasible and practical!

Here endeth the lesson!

Fully understand where your coming from Mike.... the Xbox is 8 years old now and had go inings... things change thats life but I'd bet my bottom dollar 50% or more users still use the Xbox to run XBMC.... personally I have 1 FULL HD movie in my 400+ collection and I'm still not sure how to use fanart!! LOL!! so Xbox still is a main player in my home (thanks to team XBMC of course!)

Just a shame the two main ports are on my least favorite OS's! LOL! Keep up the good work WiSo!!! my media life is in your hands! :)

heh...I wouldn't worry Geeba...to be honest, there are many of us (me included) that do not own High Def equipment. Therefore, you will have a close allie in SD for a while to come yet. I got my xbox off ebay and did the work on it myself. I can build PCs (linux and Windows) so this would always be a possibility, but there's just something about the xbox that continues to appeal to me...come in, turn on, sit down and fetch media...

Job done!

Geeba, you're still lucky then... For me, it took like one or two screenings of a high quality 1080p movie and within a week my appartment was filled with boxes containing a 56" HDTV, 5.1 speaker set, new reciever and a HTPC...

...and my wallet empty :p

Same here. I've still got my v1.0 xbox and it's going strong. Did a mod to change out the noisy gpu fan for a heatsink and it's a super quiet media center. I plan on using the xbox as my media center till it dies, then i'll think about building a htpc.

Can't wait to try out mediatream on the xbox!!

Wowser...same thing I did! I ripped out the heatsink and GPU fan, then replaced with a Zalman passive heatsink...did the job just nicely. Also ripped out the case fan and replaced it with a nice 19dB fan instead. As silent as you can get it now.

Like you, will probably run the box till it dies, although at the expense of probably a lot of niceties currently working through the skinning engine at the moment.

Cheezus. Calm down folks. Take a deep breath and relax.
It'll appear when it appears. Even if it doesn't appear today.
