I trusty Xbox 1.4 which I watch more then anything else died. So I got a Used working Xbox 1.4 and swapped my xenium gold chip over and got that working.

Now I get a 06 harddrive error. which I am pretty sure is a serial number lock problem.
The working unit was complete and unmodified in any way until today.
I'm just not sure which software package I need to take the 300 gig drive from the deadbox to the new box without wiping out everything I have on the drive.

I'm doing lots of reading and searching atm, but if someone can save me 4 hours please help.

Thanks.

First of all; understand that this has nothing to do with XBMC and that this has been answered hundreds of times over at xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com) (which is why you should have asked there instead of here at the XBMC forum as we only deal with questions/issues directly related to XBMC).

Now, is the harddrive locked?, if so you have a backup of the EEPROM?, if not then you are screwed, see:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=sv&q=EEPROM+unlock+xbox+harddrive&meta=

There are a few software programs that can remove the lock even if you lost the password but they cost a lot of money, (probabably more than a new harddrive).

This is the "Xbox hardware like: Harddrives, DVD-ROM and Media" Section.

At any rate.
I did read a few dozen post over there, where I found multiple ways to unlock it, All semi-to extremely complex. I am working on it now, will post back if I have success.

This is the "Xbox hardware like: Harddrives, DVD-ROM and Media" Section.Yes that is the title summery of the forum, but you seem to have missed the forum description under it which read:XBMC related hardware only. No modchip discussion here please.
Read FAQ + project info before posting, (follow the forum rules!).I know because I wrote it  so if you look twice you will find that the hardware discussions in this forum is mosty about video-adapters, remotes, NAS compatible with XBMC, etc.

I am saying that you will get better and faster help with your specific issue over at xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com)

You can choose to not believe me if you like but it will be your loss.

@jonb2,

You didn't say whether the drive is locked or not, or whether or not you have the EEPROM backed-up.

This is essential info.

I'm guessing from your post that the drive is locked, so if you don't have your EEPROM, you're not necessarily screwed, but there is only one way to get it... basically you wire up an LPC to serial adapter and apply power to the EEPROM chip on the dead board, then you use LiveInfo to to generate the locking key for your HDD.

see my posts here:

http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33266

It's a pain in the butt to get it, but making the cable or PCB is the hard part. The rest is software.

If you have your EEPROM, all you have to do is use LiveInfo to unlock your hard drive and you're good. You don't have to re-lock it since you have a mod-chip.

Hope this helps,

Wes

Hi all
My XBox has died an ignoble death and I was wondering, if there is a way to get the media files (about 200 gigs worth) from the internal HDD using windows or linux??? Many thanks

another reason not to put media files on the xbox. yes you can get the data off but the hard drive will probably need to be unlocked. research at xbox-scene.com

I don't see why you couldn't just plug it into a PC running windows and pull it all off...if you can't, you can probably get another Xbox for $60, unlock the HDD and put the one from your dead Xbox into it...

might not be a need to unluck (since the drive is replaced and the only reason for locking a non xbox drive would be to launch M$ dashboard). But anyway it isn't impossible to unlock it.

secondly to put in the pc, you need a special driver to be able to read the drive.

My option would be to borrow someones xbox and plug the drive in there.. then you wont have to depend on crappy hackish drivers.

But as kraqh3d said. www.xbox-scene.com has many tutorials and also forums to browse.

Thanks for replies. I am not sure if drive is unlocked. I never used it for anything but XBOX media centre (it is default dash) and when I do accidently boot into the original xboxdash it brings up a disk error...so that may be a good sign.

I should also mention at this point that it has a mod chip installed....thanks

waldo22 (http://xbmc.org/forum/member.php?u=28071) Yes the drive was locked, it's not anymore though thanks.

It's been quite a while, but I did manage to get my key and unlock the drive and install it in another xbox. I spent days searching etc... in the end I wound up taking a working xbox and stealing pieces until I got the dead one booting, then I got the Key, unlocked the drive, installed it in the working xbox. I've been using it for a couple months now and just thought I would post back the details.

atapwd proved useless as it would not allow enough characters to be input to = the password on the drive. and another dozen utilities.

If your like me and have 0 interest in xbox live, then you definitely want to make sure you permanently unlock the drive, so you don't wind up loosing a perfectly good drive and 300Gigs of stuff.
