View Full Version : Get "Your xbox requires maintence screen" on boot - dead harddrive?

Hi,

I've been a huge XBMC fan for about 2 years now, regularly updating, loving the library improvements among other things. A sad thing just happened though and now I'm in a blind panic. I booted up my xbox to watch arrested development for about the 500th time when the "Your xbox requires maintence screen" came up. I can only assume the harddrive has died since other symptoms were pointing to this before that I should have taken more seriously.

What's the best way to attempt to salvage my settings for my library/emulators?

I realize this is probably off-topic, but I know a lot of you are experts on this and only need to spend about a minute to save me hours.

Thanks a ton for any help/input/advice.

I think your pretty much SOL if your hard drive is toast.

Could be that you upgraded to a large (500gb up) HDD, but didn't partition correctly...

i guess it's a hardware issue best suited to xbox-scene though.

Depends on the code it gave you when you booted.
If it's not hd related (or possibly even if it is if it's not totally dead) you might be able to use xbhdm to grab some of the data off of it.

It gave me code 21:

"This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag

This occurs frequently when the xbox is unable to boot due to dashboard changes being made (ie Gcue true blue hasnt been resigned, parts of the stock dash are missing - incomplete FTP backups copied to a new HDD for example). "

This leads me to believe part of the dashboard was corrupted and maybe I can recover the data...gonna wait till my HD arrives before I try anything though.

Could xbhhm potentially backup the entire harddrive? (assuming I have the available space of course) It'd be such a pain to acquire all of the games I had on there again

You might try using Slayer's to rebuild your C drive. Hopefully you had an EEPROM backup.

I'll try Slayers when my new HD arrives tomorrow...I do have an EEPROM backup both on my XBOX and on my PC. Thanks for the help

Well Slayers didn't work since I had a softmod, unfortunately i didn't realize the problem till afterwards. I had my EEPROM though so I just used xbox hdmaker to make a new HD from scratch. Tried to recover data with xbrowser, but couldn't. Lost everything. Looks like I have some downloading to do

Remember to use the 32kb clusters (If you didn't know that already) if you'll have a partition bigger than 256gb.
