Hello
I have my xbox connected to my D-Link DSL-G624T router, I can FTP and all the net functions are working as they should but when I try to set up SMB I get either "Connection refused" or "Invalid Computer Name"?!
I've tried using "MSHOME" and also my PC IP but my xbox just will not connect. I've set up another user called xbox with password but still no joy. Been googling all night but I've hit a brick wall here.
Help please
Hi,
Few questions:
What build of XBMC are you using?
Did you set the WORKGROUP name on the PC and XBMC to be the same?
What O/S on the PC?
Does the PC and XBMC obtain an IP from your DSL-G624T DHCP service?
Did you disable Simple File Sharing (Folder Options) on the PC if WinXP?
Is your PC computer more than 12 characters, has non-alphabetic or numeric characters in the name?
Cheers,
KZ
Sorry,
Is your PC computer name more than 12 characters, has non-alphabetic or numeric characters in the name?

P.S. Tried disabling Simple File Sharing (folder option) but still no job. Problem here is I need the xbox to see that there IS a workgroup called MSHOME, then I can worry about seeing the shared folders later.
Help :oo:
Hi jackhulk,
Few points:
- You'll need to turn off Simple File Sharing (SFC), it's nothing but problems otherwise.
- Create an XBMC User account/password on MCE2K5, you may need to make it a Power User or Admin
- Create and share a folder, Everyone Full Control; ensure that the Security Permissions tab include the XBMC user with Full Control (for now)
- Just to confirm, your PC Name is something like:
MYPCNAME and not 1MYPC_NAME
Sometimes, the length and chars that make up the name can cause issues.
Try browsing your MSHOME network to see if the machine and folder are accessible.

Thanks kzr1y2 but I've already applied all of your suggestions and the xbox still cannot find my PC.
I can also confirm my pc name is all one word.
Here's a few more details...
Router/modem is wired to PC.
Xbox is wired to router.
Router IP: 192.168.1.1
PC IP: 192.168.1.2
Xbox IP: 192.168.1.4
On the xbox I've tried all sorts including MSHOME (my workgroup name) and both router and PC IP's.
The xbox is clearly communicating with the router as I have net access on my xbox but it just cannot see my PC via the router. Driving me nuts.
Hi jackhulk,
That's really odd ??? ... should work; I've been able to browse network resources without problems - mind you, my network is Domain enabled.
If I read your last post correctly, both the PC & XBMC are connected to the router. The router is supplying DHCP (IP, Subnet, Gateway, route table) and you can get to the net from both the PC and XBMC. I'll assume you've done the obvious and rebooted the router, then PC, and then XBMC.
Few other things to check in the hopes that someone else can provide some insight (in case I missed something):
- What's the model of the modem and/or router; or is it a combo device?
- Is this a fresh install of XBMC or an 'overwrite'?
- Was the SOURCES.XML file altered? Might help if you posted relevant portions.
- How are you navigating the network? (Filemanager, Music Library, etc.)
Have patience, other users are running into similar issues ... would be nice to isolate the root cause.
Cheers,
KZ
BTW - you will need to disable SFC to view shares on the PC; tons of posts on that topic.

Yep, both PC and Xbox are connect to router. Router supplying DHCP to PC and xbox (I tried static IP for xbox but it still cannot see workgroup). Done the obvious reboots etc.
Router model is D-Link G-624T
Fresh install of XBMC
I simply add source and either brower for network or type name of workgroup or IP address, both come back with nothing.
The XBMC SMB works fine IF I connect Xbox directly to PC but I need it going via my router as I have now have two xbox's I need to network.
Hi jackhulk,
Can you try the following test and post your results? Suggest using a default SOURCES.XML for this and use the PMIII Skin:
1. Select Music
2. Select Files View (not Library)
3. Try navigating the network without using Add Source
Workgroup (SMB) Network
SMB Network Share

1. Selected Music.
2. File View.
3. How as the only option there is to add source.
Also ...
Just to confirm;
- Windows Firewall or others are currently disabled
- You didn't make HOSTS file changes (doubt it) on your PC
- Both the computer name and DNS name on your PC match

So you're not seeing resources similar to Filemanager ?

jackhulk,
Here's a link to a post I made a while back;
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28851&highlight=sources.xml
Try copying the content in the post as the Music Section in your SOURCES.XML file; make sure not to have a duplicate <music></music> section.
When you return to the Music area, see if you can browse the network and post your findings.

I can see filemanaged no problem but I was following the above. Ok checked filemanaged but no difference there. All that is present is the xbox drives/partitions.
Hi jackhulk,
Here's a full copy of my SOURCES.XML; it's pretty 'basic' ... only big difference is that it has a reference to G: drive.
http://pastebin.com/f78e3b3a2
Create a UTF-8 SOURCES.XML file with this content and test it out and post the results of your findings.
Cheers,
KZ
Also,
Make sure the SOURCES.XML file is in the correct folder.
