View Full Version : Can I use folder shortcuts on my PC with XBOX?

Hi,

Have April 6 2008 build of XBMC installed. It is working really well. I have created a number of sources linking back to my PC harddrive over Ethernet, all of which work correctly. In order to organize a little better, I tried to create a folder shortcut under Vista, and paste it into one of the shared folders. It works perfectly under Vista, when I click on the folder shortcut I get redirected to the folder which actually resides on a different hard drive. However, the XBOX doesn't seem to pick up the shortcut as a valid folder.

I can see the main dir, and it's normal subdirs, but I cannot see any of the folder shortcuts I created. It's not a big problem, I will just move the actual folder and all of its contents under the main folder but was wondering if there was a solution so I didn't have to move things around. Here is what I mean :

\divx <==main folder picked up by XBMC
\divx\TV shows <==subdir picked up by XBMC
\divx\kids shows <==folder shortcut to a diff hard drive, not picked up by XBMC

Under Vista, when I click on "kids shows", it opens up that dir on the secondary hard drive. In XBMC, it does not show up.

Thanks,
DD.

No, Windows shares do not work like that, (and it not a XBMC/Xbox limitation, you would see the same over the network from another Windows Vista/XP computer).

The solution is either to use "junctions" (also known as "symbolic links") on your computer or use multi-paths in XBMC (multi-path requires multiple shares on your computer though instead of just one). HOW-TO use multi-path sources in XBMC is in the XBMC Online Manual:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Types_of_Media_Sources#Sources_with_multipl e_paths_.2F_targets

but for a HOW-TO use "junctions" (also known as "symbolic links") under Windows you have to search Google.

I had the same problem a while back and multi-paths fixed it for me.

I would stay away from junctions if I were you as they can royally screw things up if they break
