Okay its been a long time since I have used my original 1.0 xbox and I have a new widescreen TV. So I am using the standard AV cables that came with the xbox and I select widescreen in the dashboard but nothing happens. Can I not do widescreen with these cables or is something else messed up with my xbox?
I do have a X-B.I.T. mod chip with EvoX running. Trying to get it working in 16x9 for XBMC
Any ideas?

Yes I know where to change it in the settings but thats just it. I have it set at widescreen but it is still only doing 4x3 same with the original MS dashboard when I set it to widescreen it goes 4x3 never 16x9

If you are using standard AV cables (Yellow, Red, White) then you cannot do widescreen because that only outputs 480i which is a 4:3 resolution.

That's not actually strictly correct. There is no difference as far as pixel count between 4x3 and 16x9 - they're both 480i. The only difference is that there is a widescreen flag available in the video stream that may or may not be set to indicate widescreen. It doesn't have to be set, as seen by some TV broadcasters who don't bother sending the flag.
Whether or not the flag can be sent over composite I'm not sure.
It doesn't actually matter though, as most TVs can be forced into widescreen viewmodes, so there's no problem either way.
The key is that on a 4x3 TV that also has a 16x9 mode, switching on widescreen may not show an obvious difference as the application running doesn't have to take pixel ratio into account. I'm pretty sure the MS dash does look different in both modes, however, and ofcourse XBMC does as well, assuming you switch XBMC to a widescreen mode.
Cheers,
