View Full Version : Did I Kill my XBOX?

I am new to the whole XBOX modding and XBMC thing so please be gentle! I have searched the forums and the documentation, but I can't seem to find anything that addresses my issue.

I purchased a chip modded XBOX (xecuter2 - not sure of the exact version since I haven't yet opened the case) with a larger HD and everything has been running great and I'm loving XBMC.

Last night, I was looking at the XBMC Shutdown Menu and I clicked one of the icons - I believe it was the "favorites" and I got the original MSDASH. I poked around in there for a bit, but didn't change anything (as far as I could tell). When I couldn't figure out how to get out of there, I powered down the XBOX and started it up again. When it came back up, I got the boot screen (green stuff and XBOX logo with "xecuter2" at the bottom. After a few seconds, the screen flickered and went to a blue screen. This looks to me like there is no video signal, so I don't know if the video output settings got screwed up or what.

My box is connected using the component cables. I haven't tried any serious recovery yet, but I can still FTP to the XBOX and view everything there.

Can anyone help? I'm at a loss. Thanks.

I'm back...I've tried to boot using Slayer's, I've tried to replace the xboxdash.xbe with the backup that I had made when I first got it and I've tried to boot right to XBMC. No good - I still get the blank screen with all of these. I'm not sure if the xbox is booting, but I think it is, I just can't see anything.

I only have component cables to connect the XBOX to my TV, so I wonder if the video settings were somehow reset to use the standard connection. Does anyone know if there is a way to reset the video output?

Thanks!

I know I'm the only one responding to my own post here, but I did find some useful information at the xbox-scene.com forums:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=544220&view=findpost&p=3631313

"Go to your MS Dash and hold down the LEFT TRIGGER, RIGHT TRIGGER, RIGHT ANALOG(CLICK DOWN), AND LEFT ANALOG(CLICK DOWN) buttons and you will be able to see your dash again. This temporarily disables 480p. Now go back into your settings menu and fix your video settings."

The problem I'm having now is figuring out what settings work for my TV and still output via the component cables.

My brother has component inputs on his TV but it will only take 480i. I believe you can put whatever for widescreen or letterbox or whatever. It is just the 480i or 480p that you need to worry about. How old is the TV? If it is newer, you may be able to run 480p or 720p. If it is older, you are probably stuck with 480i.

Good luck.

As you mention, J_K_M_A_N, even though my TV has component inputs, it will only accept 480i.

So I should just set the MSDASH video settings to "normal" and no hi-resolution options right? I'm going to have to spend some time with this tonight to get it working. Thanks!

Yes, I believe normal is 480i (Not positive though as I haven't been in the microsoft dash in forever!). The other options are 480p, 720p and 1080i so just make sure none of those are enabled. They may be in different sub menus.

Good luck.

Okay, got it working. I just had to change the video settings to "normal" and disable all the HD modes. This was a good experience in that I learned a lot more about dashboards and the boot order of my BIOS, etc.
