View Full Version : So you want to become a XBMC for Xbox developer?
@to all existing a future developers looking to join team-xbmc and/or code for xbmc;
please just go right ahead and start coding, then submit any patches on our sourceforge.net project page for xbmc (link) (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/info_faq.htm#patches). if you 'prove' that you're skilled (this will be judged by the quality, size and/or quantity of the patches you submit) we at team-xbmc will contact you directly and ask if you like to officially join our team. i have been working with c++ console programming for the last 2 years and am familiar with .net ide as well as the visual studio 6 ide.
i have access to everything needed, but am not familiar with directx 8. i am willing to learn and would be glad to give assistance if needed.

i would like to help in any way i can, i am a ms vc++ developer (mainly mfc and com/dcom).
i have all the needed equipment.
cheers
i'd like to join/help xbmc development team. i have knowledges about c/c++ (including ms visual studio (6.0 and .net)), directx, i have the xbox and i hope i'll see finally a good/stable realease of xbmc. to get this i want to bring my own contribution :)

i too will be taking an in-depth c++ course this semester (if there ever was such a thing http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). i'm familiar with vb, have fooled a little around with directx, got the needed equipment and i would very much like to contribute, in any way, to the development of xbmc.
hello,
i would like to help work on the xbmc project. *i have 10+ years of c/c++ and come from the land of microsoft (seattle, not the company). *been focusing on java the last couple years, but recently helped one of our other products track down some elusive com memory leaks.
i've been trolling sourceforge lately looking for an interesting project to help out on. *i can't think of any project i'd rather work than xbmc! *
i've been using the xbmp for some time and have installed an early dec. build of the xbmc. *my partner is a techie-geek too. we play online games together. i have her full support and can put the time into this project.
cheers,
don
i wouldn't mind helping with the development.
i have an honours degree in computer science and am currently working full time as a software developer. i have almost 4 years of c++ experience, but no experience with directx. however i am quite familar with mfc/com.
i am currently working on a course with .net c#, and am finding it easy to pick up.
i also have an xbox with a matrix modchip, so i don't believe i can run a debug version of a bios.
thanks. (huge xbmp xbmc fan).
i like to help.
i have work with c++ for 5 years. and i am familar with dx and vs.net. i have xbox and xdk .
i am ready :) .
i would love to help out the development of xbmc.
i have the necessary software and hardware, as well as experience in c++ (currently employed as a c++ developer - although my job is less exciting than xbmc development) and devstudio. i'm still rough in the directx area, but i'm working on learning/improving that.
i'm interested, let me know! :)

as a loooong time user of xbmp and now xbmc, i'd love to help make it even better. i having coding experience but that's not what i'd be interested in, and it seems lots of coders are already willing to help!
instead, i'd want to work on xbmc from a usability/interface design approach. the current gui is workable (and is to be commended!), but is far from perfect. i'm talking about more than just skin tweaks here or there, too.
consistency, visibility, feedback, and just following standard console conventions -- these are all things that could really be improved and make xbmc look and feel sleek, clean and just damn polished.
i've got all the dev tools necessary, but i've a better background in design and like it more. lets make xbmc the killer app in _every_ way!
i am also interested in helping the xbmc project.
i am an experienced c++ developer (more than 10 years and still counting).
i am am very familiar with com technology, using atl, with msdev 6 and now .net.
however i dont have directx knowledge but i would love to learn. i have recompiled xbmp a few time.
one last thing, i am french, but i am able to read/write english...
if you are interested send me an email... :)
as a long time user of both xbmp and xbmc with 16+ years of commerical programming experiencing (many languages including asm, c/c++) i'd love to lend a hand.
i have solid experience and knowledge of just about anything programming related including sql, tcp/ip etc. etc.
i have a chipped xbox, most xdks (incl 5849) and have been playing around with the xbmc source for some months now. the only skill i'm missing is dx8, but i'm sure i could pick it up :)
lol. i was planning on maybe putting some time into it (briefly joined frodo on yamp but had way too little time in reality) but seeing all the replies here i guess there's no use for me even thinking about it ;)
i've read all the posts. *i can't say i meet all your criteria, but this project is brilliant! and i would like to help where i can.
i've been using xbmp for a long time. *i having vb coding experience but no c++ or directx!
i've got ms .net which i'm self teaching at the mo. *you must be thinking what can this plum offer? *well, i can only offer my time and the skill i have! *i'm willing to learn and put hard graft in. *
i can help with writing docs, tutorials, some grafix logos, skins and support other ppl. if needed , just let me know :)
currently do all the above at work!
i'd be interested in working on xbmc. i've got 10+ years c++, bs & ms in cs (good design skills), some experience in dx, lots of com, lots of networking (from raw socket on up). i haven't done any xbox development to speak of though. only had a modded box for ~ a month. just now starting to write some things, but doesn't seem to far from what i'm used to.

oh i am realy amazed by this feedback. where have you all been the whole time? :)
for all who think their coding skills are not good enough for helping out in xbmc development (maybe you just know the wrong coding language) we also need ppl ineterested in:
* - writing documentations (dev docs, tutorials)
* - helping out on translations (language files, upcomming manual)
* - doing some grafix (xbmc logo, skins)
* - and support other ppl by answering questions in the forum and in our irc channel (#xbmc@efnet) of course. :)
* - everything else you can think of the projects needs
i am looking forward to the new year and the growing of xbmc with your help.

i'm not a programmer, but i'd love to offer my assistance in any way possible. i'm currently working as a project co-ordinator for a video games company, dealing with 2 projects.
like i say, i'm not a programmer, but i'd be willing to chip in with things like bug tracking, qa test plans, release schedules and probably even support and documentation.
i can also lend you guys a hand if you want,
been a proffessional programmer for the last 13 year, mainly c/c++. last years it has been a lot of c#. fun language but no challenge !
i know my way arround most of the ms stuff (com/atl/wtl/mfc etc) except dx wich i never have the opportunity to work with, also been working on both unix and linux based systems.
my strenght is as a system programmer, never liked to code gui's :-)
as i've been using xbmp and now xbmc for almost a year, it's definitely time for me to give back
i have a computer science background, and some programming experience in over many languages, including c++, but left the technical scene a few years ago. i'd be happy to participate in the following activities:
1) writing doc
2) translating docs in french
cheers,
netwiz.
hi all,
i've been hacking on the xbmc source code in my spare time and have gotten pretty familiar with a lot of it, as well as some of the underlying mplayer code. *i've added one minor patch and have a working proto for variable speed ff/rw. *i'd love to help out on this project more.
however, i don't have a huge amount of time right now. *as well as my full time job as tech lead for a network software company, i have a number of time consuming extra curricular activities.
but, in the fairly near future i'm likely to have more time on my hands for some personal reasons so things look more promising then. *add my name to the list if i would be useful. *my usable skills are:
15+ years of commercial development experience
c++, c, x86 assembly
dos, win16, win32, linux, bsd, *nix api programming
linux kernel, network stack and device driver programming
tcp/ip and related network protocols at the packet, system and application levels
mfc, com, dcom, activex, basic directx
/meghead
i would be interested in helping out. *i have 5 years experience doing embedded systems (commercial/military aircraft flight control systems) using c/c++/assembly. *i am willing to do anything including documentation, webpages, or coding as i have a lot of experience doing all 3 (faa requires uber amounts of documentation). more importantly i have a passion for this stuff and love to devote spare time to things like this.
i would love to help out in any way possible. i have had a few years experience in assembly language for intel machines and c++. i have also played with visual basic 3 and 6 for some time now.
i have access (if i want it kekekeke) to xdk an un-moded xbox and microsoft studio .net the architect version ;).
let me know

ok. i see that most of you are new to the forum, project or even xbmc (first post for most of you).
so i will try to give a few infos since frodo (one of the main devs) started his vacation today and will not be able to get you started till he comes back (next week).
since all of you sounds very motivated to contribute to the project and just in case you don't know already xbmc is opensource. you can find our sourceforge project page here. (http://www.sourceforge.net/xbmc). maybe you wanna take a look at the code to get a "feel" for it.
if you have questions about it, feel free to ask in the forums and we will try to help you (there is no dev documentation as of yet). a "howto compile xbmc source" can be found here (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=5;t=2).
if you wanna start right away feel free to add/fix/improve whatever you want. just in case you don't know what to do head over to the "feature suggstions" forum and read what ppl want (but i guess you have enought features in mind you wanna see in xbmc).
another place you can get help/infos is the irc channel #xbmc on efnet (if you need a quick answer).
i am realy looking forward to the next year and the development of xbmc with all your help. :)
ps: frodo will contact you when he is back from hollydays.
i'd like to join/help xbmc development team. i have knowledge about c/c++, hardware design and device drivers.

would be interested in doing some xbmc dev.
i'm a professional xbox game developer.

i know directx 8 and 9 including vertex and pixel shaders.
i'm familiar with the xdk.

if you guys like to start coding something directly but don't know where to start i suggest that you begin by porting or re-create from scratch the functions/featutes that are already in xbmp (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/info_project.htm) (but not yet in xbmc) to xbmc. i believe noone of the existing devs are working on these functions:
xbmp functions/features not yet in xbmc:
- control panel
- screensaver (black screen) on configurable timer
- ttf gui fonts, (why not skip mplayer fonts and only use ttf fonts?)
- ttf subtitle fonts, (why not skip mplayer fonts and only use ttf fonts?)
- vobsub subtitles (un-compressed), need to be improved (hdd cached and read in smaller portions?, vmm?)
- compressed (rar) vobsub subtitles, need to be improved (hdd cached and read in smaller portions?, vmm?)
- video bookmarking (so can resume a movie later, even after reboot)
- stack multi-file videos option, plays files ending with _cdx & -cdx & .cdx as one
- audio normalization filter
- ffwd/rwd seeking and pause during audio visualization, also on normal music playback whithout visualization (so in menu only)
- tv-guide *(xmltv show listings)
- full dashboard bootup using .cu (same as in latest xbmp cvs)
- command line option available when launch a xbe via shortcut (.cut)
- iso 9660 option to cache the whole file to harddrive before play (and option to select which drive to cache to)
- audio cue sheets (.cue) support (should work with all xbmc supported audio codecs)
- bi-directional (right to left) subtitle support (hebrew, etc. languages)
- xbox front led control
- change video settings (read/write to eeprom) big warning here!!! (more than one confim/cancel option with info?)
- streaming video from a tivo over network (requires hacked tivo running ccxstream), to be ported by duo later?
however if you're one of those who like a bigger challange i would like to request xine (http://www.xinehq.de) to be ported to xbox and a xbmc dll core
however if you're one of those who like a bigger challange i would like to request xine (http://www.xinehq.de) to be ported to xbox and a xbmc dll core
i was thinking that vlc might be useful as another player core for xbmc, it has lots of features including dvd playback, and unlike xine it has already been ported to many platforms including windows which may make porting it to a dll easier. (although what do i know about porting mediaplayers  ) and it's open source of course.

hi there
i'm also interested in helping you to develop the xbmc.
i'm familar the following programming languages:
- c# very good
- c++ good
- java enough
- vb very good
i've also expirience in programming directx 9b applications.
i've written a voice over ip communication tool as exam-work for my school. this tool was written in c# and managed directx.
i know that managed directx is much easier to use than the "normal" c++ directx, but i think i could handle this ;-)

i would be able to contribute around 15 hrs a week or so. if you are interested in having me contribute just let me know.
i have all of the approriate tools required and can assist with anything on the following subjects:
c++ 13 yeare experience
c# 3 years experience
vb.net and vb (started at version 3)
java 4 years experience
xml 2 years
in addition i have been developing applications for around 13 years and am familiar with networking, networks and ip programming as well.
i have about 6 years of sql experience as well and can also develop in web-based languages including asp.net, cold fusion and php. i don't see how that would be of much assistance to your current project but you never know.
regardless, just email me if you need more specific information.
k, topic is closed now.
we will contact the ppl we think can make a contribution to xbmc in a couple of days.

ok,
time to make a decision.
first i would like to make clear to our new members that:
please only apply if you really want this and want to spend considerable time on xbmc. if you just wanna send a patch now and then, then offcourse thats fine too.
but i think to become part of the xbmc development team you must have enough time
(i myself spend like 2-3 hours a day on developing xbmc. i would b glad if you could spend like +/- 10 hours a week)
ok, here we go:
i would like to invite the following developers to become part of the xbmc developers team:
- seschu01 cause he's experienced and has +/- 15hrs/week
- butcher for his experience and directx knowledge
- twisted for his experience and directx knowledge
- forza, cause he seems very enthousatic
- meghead, cause he's already familar with the source
if you still wanna join, then please drop me a mail at
csharprules@hotmail.com
about the other developers. if you really wanna join 2, then please dont feel disappointed. as said its hard 2 make a decision, so maybe i should have choosen you.
if so, prove it to me by sending patches, extensions, bugfixes, whatever. if you prove to be good and really wanna join then offcourse i'll add you to the team as well!
now, the non-developers.
i would like to ask gamester & hullebulle to make a selection
for ppl wanting to writing manuals etc
i am also interested in helping the xbmc project.
i can help to make the skin.. am working in phososhop and will
help to make it...
if you are interested send me an email...

i've got the x*k only at the end of march, then i had my long holyday, today i checked out the project files, i'll try to build them and accommodate with these tools ;)

there is only a problem: the last version of xbmc is so stable and bugs free, that i don't think there is something to do *:) *:) *:)

hehe, nice to hear that you are still interested, so welcome to xbmc development.
i think there is still enough to do for you. *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
take a look at the sourceforge bugtracker (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=87054&atid=581838) and i'll bet you will find something.
if you don't like bughunting, feel free to add a new feature you are missing or a user suggested, but beware, we have a feature freeze atm for the upcomming 1.0 version. so new things won't be added until the 1.0 code is finished. :)

for everyones information, we have now invited ezar2003 to officialy join team-xbmc and he has accepted. welcome *ezar2003!
(fyi, reason we invited ezar2003 is that he submited many patches and he is also showing loads of enthusiasm for xbmc coding).

a quick question,
i got the src tree from sf cvs and built the project locally and ended with an .exe file. is this the correct xbox binary if i just rename it to .xbe? yes, i know i could just try it out on my xbox but i don't wanna take a chance. :-)
thanks.
quick answer: no
see the nice long thread about how to compile xbmc we have pinned on our forum

gasparo:
xbmc is programmed in c++. yes, newer versions of the xdk will work fine.
the procedure is generally to start hacking through the source and seeing what you'd like to work on, then getting stuck in coding a patch. you can ask questions etc. via the forums. once you've done a patch (or three) and it's decided you'd be a valuable asset, you'll be invited to join the team + be given dev status etc.
one thing that you may wish to look into is the xbmc skinning project xform. this is coded in c# and it would be fantastic if you'd be able to help with that - it is the major thing holding people back from making skins. see the front page post on xbox-scene for more info.
ofcourse, it's your time - you're welcome to work on anything you like!
cheers,
jonathan
i saw that everyone is using visual studio.net 2003 to compile xbmc. does anyone know if newer version will work?

hi! visual studio 2005 has been released now for some time. does the new xdk integrate into vs.net 2005?? and if so, what does this mean for xbmc? will it still compile? visual studio 2005 is entirely different from vs 2003 even the runtimes are completely different...
does anyone know if its possible to use vs.net 2005 with xbmc?
i'd be very surprised if it did work.. the xdk required an update when last vs came.
ive searched and couldnt find anything on this.
ive applied to vs 03 the visual studio .net 2003 crystal reports security update. the compile seems ok but i dont want to submit bug reports if my config isnt on the baseline others are at. any issues?
haven't done that, but i'm sure you are fine.

are there instructions on what types of things are done to port the latest mplayer release into xbmc? *i'm interested in having xbmc play dvr-ms and i've read the posts that said to check with the mplayer group for support. *my interest is that if mplayer supports this format, what needs to be done to import this functionality into xbmc?
being a newbie, i tried to search for the information in this forum, on google, and in the docs directory for xbmc, but was unable to find the information. *any help would be appreciated.
(by the way, i'll do the work if i can get a handle on where to start).
no docs no.. it's going to be a big process thou if you want to port whole mplayer.
just taking the updated stuff for dvr-ms it would be alot simpler. there has been some fixes in that area that might be of interest.

thanks for the tips. as i mentioned, i was trying to get some sort of starting thread to take a look at. since i'm unfamiliar with the dvr-ms additions (or any of the mplayer architecture itself), i'm still not sure where this will lead me, but i'll work on doing some more research into the code. any further help would be appreciated.

Given the age of these posts, I wonder if anyone ever reads these anymore. Anyway, I have a question for any developer. I'm at my wits end with trying to run the debugger on the XBMC. Every time I build and download, I either get an error reading a file, or I get an unhandled exception.
For the former problem, it appears that the symbols being used aren't the ones from my build, as the 'step-over' action ends up stopping on blank lines. I haven't even tried debugging the latter.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate any tidbits of wisdom.
