I spoke to someone who has been enjoying watching NetFlix videos via Vista MCE on their TV. That got me wondering as to how this might be done on XBMC. On Vista there's support for the DRM they are using with WMP 11, obviously we do not get that. There's talk about NetFlix supporting OSX and Linux in the future using Microsoft's Silverlight. I'm curious, what do the devs think about possibly supporting this should Netflix do this? Obviously it's not out yet but I understand that the devs aren't real thrilled with closed source stuff, I can understand that. How do folks feel about Silverlight? The license is BSD "like" but umm well considering the source....

If netflix offers it on linux/OSX it'll still be contaminated with their DRM and only available in their custom application. Unless sites start making videos freely available in the format like youtube and FLV, I don't see anyone much caring about it. Really silverlight is a loser technology anyway.

Yah, agree it will likely be wrapped up in something, the studios will insist on it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be displayed the same way the Vista plug-in is doing it. Since I'm sure at least some of us are subscribers to NetFlix it might be nice to be able to watch those live streamed films on the TV the same way we can do Apple Trailers now. Speaking of which, noticed the Trailer button in movie info today and it worked! Very nice :)

Just wait.

Netflix has plans to make a set top box of their own to stream through. Rumor is once this happens the entire Netflix library will be available on-demand rather than the totally pathetic library now available on-demand.

I almost never use the on-demand side of Netflix and instead just rent the movies. Much MUCH better selection and frankly I don't need instant gratification anyway. Just add it to my queue and it shows up whenever :)
