If I have a soft-modded xbox with XBMC installed, can I pull the drive and GHOST it (using bit-by-bit method) onto the drive of a second xbox and end up with two softmodded xboxes (with both running XBMC)?

i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong but i think the answers no.

the drive is locked to the host XBOX during the mod process. while you might be able to make a clone of the disk, it wouldn't work when you loaded it into the donor XBOX because the eeprom keys would be wrong.

softmodding isn't hard if you follow the steps and there's lot soft tutorials around.

I used xboxhdm to do mine and it must be easy if i can do it  done about 10 so far and doing another one over the weekend for a colleague at work.

be happy to help, hell if your anywhere near Birmingham (that's the original one in England of course) i'll do it for you

Not to mention that I think the softmod modifies the chip as well (the eeprom), so cloning the hardrive wouldn't cover that.

I could be wrong though.

Vambo,

I wouldn't ask you to repeat all the steps here, but a link to the method you used would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, I have looked at several guides to softmodding and everyone involved (1) using a video game (such as Tom Clancy Spinter Cell) which I don't have, probably can't rent and don't want to buy, and (2) a memory card which I don't have and would prefer not to buy, since I never intend to use the xbox for gaming anyway.

My experience is that a few weeks ago, I bought a used xbox off craigslist for $75, then paid a local guy $30 to softmod it and install the latest xbmc and my choice of scripts. Since then, I've bought two more off craigslist for $75 and $70 and so far the softmod dude has fixed up a second box, also for $30. The third (and final) xbox isn't modded yet and the dude is dying of the flu -- which is runnin through my town like it's 1917-18 again -- so I thought maybe I'd try to mod the third box myself... only my brilliant idea of using Ghost is obviously a dud.

If you know of a way to softmod a box which doesn't require buying games or cards I don't have, I'm ready to try. If not, I'll just wait for the dude to recover.

Well, if you don't have any of the equipments you mentioned I'd recommend you wait for the modder to get well. I'm not positively sure, because I may have forgotten if there's another technique available but there's at least the possibility to hot-swap, but it's not a preferred method by any means. It takes timing, and some risk, but it's definitely doable. I've done it several times before, but I'm used to it, so I know the process by heart, but when I first modded a box with a mem-card - I knew I had found heaven. If you really want to do a hot-swap, go ahead, but it's not recommended at all.
