Softmod Xbox able to boot Xbox game backups?

Is a softmodded xbox supposed to be able to boot from a burned disc? I thought not...but was proven wrong when I booted off of Slayer's EvoX autoinstaller disc.
I thought when the xbox first boots (and reads drive) its on retail bios, thus not able to read backups.

Can someone clarify this for me?

Yes, a softmoded xbox will run unsigned code witch includes alternate dashboards, home brew games, or backed up games. The problem most people seem to have with softmods is when you incorrectly change the boot dashboard you break the softmod. Then it no longer runs unsigned code and it can be more difficult to repair.
