View Full Version : Audio In Menus
Recently I upgraded to a newer build, and the sound in my menus stopped working. Acutally all sound stopped working, but once I changed my audio settings from default to the pass through, the sound works in movies, and music. Any ideas?
Does sound work fine in k?ubuntu?
if not, try enabling the passthrough in alsamixer (run alsamixer from command line, arrow over to the passthrough device and unmute it)
That's how I fixed it a while back... if I remember correctly.
Sound doesn't work on desktop either, and it used to. Movie and music sound works. I checked the alsamixer, and nothing is muted.

Sounds like you're off to the ubuntu forums then.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have allready been working with the Ubuntu forums to try to solve this, the reason I posted here is because the problem started directly after updating to a newer build of XBMC. While I realize that a pre-req package may have caused it, I was posting here to see if any fellow XBMC users had the same issue. Again thanks for the suggestions, but I would appreciate a non smart-assed response next time.
I've now had sound stop working twice via my digital output. Both times sound still worked via the headphone output just no digital. Since this also stopped at the desktop I concluded it's an Ubuntu issue but no amount of resinstalling ALSA, muting and unmuting, tweaking of files, has brought it back. After the first time I rebuilt from scratch and then when working I backed it up to my NAS. The second time it occurred it was after XBMC locked up on me and while I saw lots of "broken pipe" messages in the log from XBMC pointing at ALSA I still figured it was Ubuntu and simply rebuilt from backup.
I'm not yet ready to conclude that this isn't an Ubuntu bug however not being able to bring it back short of a rebuild is pretty distressing - although fast with a good backup! Asking in the Ubuntu forums is pretty much useless IMO since there are so many screaming about weird sound issues. If others are having issues like this after an XBMC crash maybe we ought to start trying to see if there's a common thread. While I doubt XBMC is doing this to our systems keeping an eye out won't hurt.

I installed a fresh Ubuntu7.10 OS today and used the Build script to compile the XBMC source. At first the audio worked without any problems (after unmuting the IEC958 Passthrough). Now I experience the same problem.
No sound in the XBMC menu and also no sound in Ubuntu.
Also I couldnt play mp3 files within XBMC. This was solved by changing the default output in XBMC to IEC958. So PCM sound and DD5.1 sound in XBMC is working, expect the sound in XBMC menu and Ubuntu itself.
I dont know what's causing this problem. But I am willing to follow any lead in order to get to the source of this problem.
Cheers,
Bram
I've had similar issues. Bring up the volume controls (double click top right) on Desktop. For me, my volume sliders had all gone to the bottom.
Maybe the same issue?

Yeah, this is a common issue with Alsa... they default their settings to no sound. Kind of counter intuitive for a sound device :)
