Are their any tutorials or software to unlock an xbox harddrive without using a modchip? The situation is where an xbox of mine is getting error 16, and I found the solution (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210562). I do have an extra xbox that is softmoded with xbmc so I could maybe use that drive and swap it out with the xbox that currently has the error. I have googled it but most tutorials and such require a modchip. Any help would be apprieciated and I hope this post made sense.
If you can handle some basic soldering you could build a eprom reader. Then unlock the drive in your pc. Reading Xbox HDD Key (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/Reading_Xbox_Hdd_key.htm) I built one to repair a broken xbox I picked up for next to nothing a while ago. I used 3.9K resistors instead of 4K and it worked great. Good Luck

No soldering required, use a hotswap method. I believe the xbox will keep the hdd unlocked even under error16. Here is the quick and dirty steps
Open the xbox and remove the HDD. (leave cables connected)
Connect a video cable and power cable to the xbox(video need not be connected to a display)
Connect a wire with aligator clips to the xbox case and your PC case (connect grounds together) <-very important step
Burn a copy of xboxHDM
Turn on xbox let boot to error screen.
Disconnect xbox IDE cable (yes the xbox is still running)
Connect PC IDE cable
Turn on PC, boot from xboxHDM CD
use tutorials for xboxHDM for installing softmod. Dont worry about unlocking the harddrive steps. Because this is a hotswap the drive is already unlocked. Make sure to use a softmod that bypasses the clock check (UXE does if I remember correctly)
turn off computer
turn off xbox
reconnect xbox IDE cable
turn on
enjoy your softmodded xbox
