View Full Version : Power Supply Gone! Now my pictures too!

I had *all* my family pictures from the birth of my 9 month old daughter to today.

For some reason I had a false sense of security in my xbox, and then the power supply went.

I took the hard drive out and hooked it up to my PC, and all I saw was some very distorted versions of my old XP OS (it was used in a PC before it was in my Xbox). I forgot that you can't view FATX in Windows.

So I loaded it in a friends XBOX (a diff modchip and bios, if it matters) and XBMC loaded fine, but all of the content in my F:\ drive is gone. There were a few backed up games but way more importantly my pictures are gone!

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

rapid bump because a thread with 1 reply gets more views :)

I am desperate.

How did you transfer them to the xbox? Maybe you still have a copy on a different computer or CDR disk?

Also I should note that it was a 120gb drive and when I go into filemanager F only shows 800megs free, which is accurate to how full it was before the crash.

Cocophone: I used my XBOX to backup the pictures because I recently formatted the only PC that had them on it.

So the pictures are no where else!

If your drive is unlocked or you know the HD key, you might be able to access the data using xboxhdm. There might be easier ways that I'm not aware of. If you decide to use xboxhdm be sure you know exactly what you're doing or else you can easily destroy whatever data you have left.

Jesus, man. There's no way to say this in a way that doesn't sound condescending, but check out Picasa and/or Windows Live Photo Gallery. Both are excellent photo editors that allow you to upload all your pics to free online galleries.

Aside from that, get over to http://forums.xbox-scene.com

NotShorty: I appreciate the constructive criticism and I totally agree.

I repaired the PSU and when I booted the old xbox back up all the files on my F drive were showing up again.

See, something like this. Just fix the power supply:

The xbmc forums are really limited for hardware related stuff.

For completeness I'll awnser this question

The partition table on the xbox is not stored on the hard drive. Its stored in the bios. That is why there are versions of bios with only E drive (like the original bios) some with E + F (.06 style bios's) and E + F + G (.67 bios's)
To recover the files you would have to use another xbox with the same bios you were using.
Alternatively you can mount the partitions under xboxHDM and recover the files through linux. Windows could technically be able to access them but the tools to mount fatx partitions in windows are utter garbage
