since smb is supported any network attached device with smb should work fine.

smb/samba is already supported. cifs is not (see cifs rfe (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=593)). think all other nas access/network protocols are proprietary(?)

i was looking for just a nas device not really a server. i could get a snap server but that would be a waste of money. i was looking to see if thier was a way to use a 250gig nas device that could be transported from pc to xbox. could do the same with one of the xpc kits out, but i am in iraq and it is not that easy to keep computers running over here. between heat and dust killing the cdroms would still have to normal crap that goes with having a pc. something like this

nas device (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?catid=207)

undertsand that all nas boxes use a protocol, but not all use same protocol, if it is a proprietary protocol then it can't be implemented.
("nas/network attached storage" is not a standard, it's just a common name for a device or box that all preform a similar task/service).

what i'm saying is that you can't have feature request for generic "network attached storage support", specify the specific protocol!

i just installed xbmc today so i'm still pretty new with it.

i do have it accessing music/pictures/videos off of my nas however (which is a nasas-2040 with 900mb of raid5 storage). i'm using smb which i've used for ages just playing movies off of the nas via a winxp box thats hooked up to my tv.

so, there is no problem with what your suggesting.

oh smb from my nas (nasas-2040) definately works great! *'ve watched a couple of movies over my smb link to my nas without any issues. *the nas is being used simultaneously by 4 computers, one doing fairly regular traffic on it while i'm watching movies.
