Hello Guys

I'm having trouble playing back a 852, 480 mkv file, it plays fine, but then it does drop frames by the bucket load. I have tested this on both the xbox hd and over a samba share.

So I'm not expecting mericals from the xbox here, so what is best res the video should be, and whats the best program I can use to rescale it. I have virtualdub, but I can't seem to load mkv's. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Gregs

VirtualDubMod should work, but you will need the appropriate codecs installed. You will want to look at sites like doom9, as they're more dedicated to that kind of thing.

what output resolution will you be using? standard or hi definition? 480p? 720? Pal or NTSC? this will help determine your needs.

Don't use h264 and you can easily go higher than 852x480

oks, so my orignal file is 852, 480. mkv

Its incoded (I think checking Media player clasic on my pc, in MPeg4 video H264 video.

I've copied the file to the xbox HD, and it strill drops conciderable frames. Probably around 5 - 15 fps playback.

I was thinking to resolove the problem I should re-encode to a lower res. But beint an encoding newbie I seem to be having numours problems!.

Should media centere be able to playback these files? If not whats the best way to re-encode. I've looked at Doom9, but found it a complete mindfeild of encoders, decoders etc.

When I load up the file in virtual dub I get an error: "couldnt locate decompressor for format 'yyyy' (with odd y characters) [unknown].

Anyone have any tips?

Thanks for the help
