View Full Version : LIRC compatible IR/IrDA receivers?
I am currently searching for a lirc compatible receiver with USB. I have found several receivers (commercial and examples for self-building) but they all work only with RS-232.
Can anyone recommend me some?

Can't you just buy and use a RS232 to USB converter? ???
...otherwise I guess it depends where in the world you live?

Are these really working with lirc? If I remember correctly I read somewhere that lirc does not support these adapters.

the best (and cheapest) solution for me was: Buy a XBox DVD Kit. IR Receiver and remote for about 10€ on ebay. And an XBox/USB adapter, so you can plug it into your pc. It works with Lirc! Needed some hours to get it to work with it though, but that was every time I tried to do Lirc stuff.
I use the MCE remote and reciever and it works well. It also comes with two IR transmitters which you can use to drive other bits of gear (for example I've got scripts that change the settings on my amplifier using the IR transmitters).

Very interesting. I thaught that LIRC was unable to use these transmitters.
Would you please share your scripts ? I'd definitely love to do that as well.
For knatsch, go for a MCE remote, they are very easy to setup with Lirc.
Instructions at MythTV wiki (http://http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_lirc_install) worked like a charm for me.
Thanks

usb to serial dongles won't work. For serial recivers lirc uses sensitive timers and usb signaling breaks that.
Xbox1 remotes works nicly with lirc and XBMC, just use the atiusb driver. MCE 2005 remotes also work very well with the mce_usb2 driver
Thanks guys I have bought the MCE and the usb receiver is working very well :)
Kako78, your guide was very helpful to get it running!
Thought I'd wade in here to share my own ignorance. I'm currently using a Harmony 885 with my Xbox XBMC install and my Linux box arrives tomorrow. So will the Xbox IR receiver work equally well with it under Linux, assuming I have a USB adapter?
I have not tested that combo but it should work.
Lirc can handle the IR reciver and then it's just a matter of writing the right stuff into lircd.conf and lircmap.xml :)
I went with the Streamzap receiver in the end. Should arrive on Thurs. Will test and post results.
FWIW, the Mytbuntu distro setup will allow for an easy setup of the remote. All I had to do was tell it I was using an MCE remote during install and it worked fine. There are instructions posted elsewhere for getting lirc going with this remote elsewhere. The MCE keyboard though, that's not working other than the media keys. :-(

I have a Harmony 555, which works splendidly with my Xbox. Now I am planning to move to a Linux HTPC.
Anybody here has a working setup of a Harmony remote on Linux PC with XBMC?
What receiver can I use? Preferably USB as RS-232 is being ruled out of most small factor boxes (I am considering the EEEBox)
I read everywhere in LIRC website that USB dongles and adapters would not work.
I use an MCE USB receiver and MCE IR codes with a Harmony 555 XBOX version remote. It's pretty much PnP and ZipZoomFly was selling them pretty cheap - my sig ought to have more info.
Edit: In other posts I've mentioned this I also took the time to find a ZZF linky for purchase, you ought to be able to search and find that.

@BLKMGK: can you wake your PC back from standby/suspend with the remote?

Honestly I've not ever tried! I leave my HTPC up and running full time w/XBMC as it's interface.

If you ever have a try please let us know if it works.

That I will, it would be a nice feature to have. Not sure what button combo would put it to sleep etc. but if I can figure it out I will try. I've just now today received a Logitech DiNovo keyboard to try out. I'm not sure I'd want to use it for a daily remote but it's looking pretty darned nice! I have yet to try and install it, I understand I may need to do some work to get it's mouse functionality working, but check out the thread discussing it too. It's USB/BlueTooth so if the MCE remote won't work for you maybe this one will!
