Ok, I think it’s time for a first release.
Vinci was made as an answer to all dark graphics/skins we see these days.
I wanted to create a classy timeless skin without too many web2.0 influences.
Some Stuff:
Only 720p is supported at the moment, I have no intention to create a 4:3 version.
As my xbox is broken I haven’t seen Vinci on a real television, so report readability issues.
The video-OSD is not yet finished and playing DVD’s will show parts of the original PMII skin.
I’ve included weathericons. To use them, put the .rar in the xbmc media-folder. Don’t forget to backup the original weather.rar!
I think the most essential functions are skinned. But I’m not a xbmc poweruser so let me know if I forgot some really important stuff.
The xml is an absolute mess. I wouldn’t advice looking at the code. :p It also contains a lot of unused PMII xml. (Vinci is based on PMII)

Word of warning guys the skin has no Login screen xml file so you wont be able to get into xbmc without reseting the default skin unless you turn off login screen before using this skin

Wow. I'm really surprised this skin hasn't received more comments.
I, for one, think it's a very nice change of pace from more "technological" skins like xephyr (which is also very nice in its own way).
It obviously has some kinks to be worked out (some of which I see have been addressed already), but Mntz isn't going to keep the hard work up without some encouragement.
Excellent work, sir. Please continue. Clearity remains my default, but this skin could present a viable alternative for me with a little more polish.

I've noticed the shutdownbug, thinking of a way to fix it. In the mean time go to the mainscreen when you want to shutdown then you won't see the bug.

That site doesn't seem to allow linking thumbnails of pictures.
One suggestion I have for the skin is the ability to change the color on the font.
White text and a bright background don't mix together at all.
For best reading issues the text and the background should always have good contrast to each other.
Skin looks great so far from what I can see, I'll have to try it out as soon as I get home.. Hope it likes 1080i

The fonts were really small anyway but make sure your running it in 720p thats what it was designed for

Just tried out this skin -- looks beaut.
However I would also like an option for greater contrast between the background and the text. White text on a light background is sometimes hard to look at.

I've changed the contrast of the skin. It should be a bit better now.
Made some other small changes as well. (new wide view, better profile support, ...)

After breaking my xbox I read about the login screen error, now I can't boot to xbmc (it freezes at login screen) and I can't ftp to change it since it freezes and it never connects to the network? how can I undo this? im desperate...

its an iso of an xbox rescue disk, basically boots you up an evox dash with ftp access. Burn it to a CD with nero and your sorted.

Are you sure you're using xbmc in 720p displaymode?
Does this skin not work with the normal settings Pal?
I do not have 720p or 1080p only "normal" tv :>

that's the way things are now. lots and lots of people getting HDTV's. time for you to get a new TV I think. or you could always just stick with PMIII. or make your own skin. ;)

If you sort by episode, you get the episode # in front of the title.

Hmm i think the available thumbs should show up when you choose the "get thumb" button.
Maybe try the latest build (12 dec) wich has numerous fixes and some graphical updates.

It's been a while since i've updated Vinci. One of the reasons is that i don't use xbmc anymore because of a dead xbox. I'm hoping to buy a HTPC for xbmc within this or the next month.
Development will be picked up again.
I've slowly started Vinci development again.
Today i tested the new Fanart stuff. Please note it's a work-in-progress, alpha values/colors need to be tweaked.
There's also a strange bug with the clock in linux xbmc. But you get the idea :)

I'm using the colors provided by the fanartinfo. They always seem to work quite fine. The only thing is that the 3 colors are almost the same at the moment.

Fixed as of last night. I now allow artists to select their own colors, so they should match up much better. I'm going through all the fan art by hand today and picking colors for everything. That should make your life much easier. Once again, I think your design and implementation of the fan art is incredible.

I'm one of those who prefer to have "TV Shows" and "Movies" options on the main menu and have them onclick to the relevant library instead of going through "My Videos > Movies/TV Shows > Title" if you know what I mean.

This skin is looking great. I just wish it had a view like Coverflow or something so that I can see my movie posters really big. Right now the view with the biggest view still isn't big enough for me to clearly see the posters from my couch. Is coverflow view something that can easily be added? Is it something you'd consider?

Great work Mntz. In my view there's only 2 decent skins available for XBMC, xTV and Vinci, and the former can't match the pleasing aesthetics of the latter.
I've been trying to test the fan art option but is it just me or is there no button to select fan art, just the usual "get thumb" option? When I'm viewing the list of episodes for a season, and the display is set to fan art, there are two "get thumb" buttons available. One will start the episode playing and the other just displays the usual thumbs?
Am I doing something wrong or is the option missing?

All I know is that Fan Art is not supported in the current T3ch release, so unless you have compiled your own xbmc since fan art has been added, you won't get proper fan art support. That said I do not make my own compiles, nor have I tried the fan art option to see what kind of lack of support would occur...
There's a new T3CH release due out tomorrow.
I know the skin was developed for 720p, but I am running it on Linux in 1008p. The fonts were pretty darn small.
I then copied the Font.xml from the 720p directory into the 1080i directory and that helped quite a bit.
Just in case anybody else is running > 720p.

I'm loving the new update. Have a few comments though. In the Video Library (I noticed this in Coverflow view) the name of the movie in the lower left section of the screen is gray and does not have enough contrast from the grayish textured background for it to be seen clearly. Also, I'm on a mac and the Font used for the Time in the lower right doesn't show up. It just displays a blank white box. It also does this on the top center of the screen where the section name is supposed to be displayed. Not sure if this is just a mac related issue or what. Anyway, keep up the great work.

Some times it'll complain about having too many failed entries in the playlist.

I'm not sure why this happens. On my older laptop with ati firegl videocard i had the same problem, on my htpc with nvidia 7150 the clock displays fine.
I just tested it on my mac pro at work and it displays fine so maybe its an issue with the mac mini's (it has an intel GMA950 integrated graphic card).

Interesting...I just tested this and out of three TV shows (Greys Anatomy, ER, and NCIS) all work fine except for NCIS. When I pick an episode from NCIS it just hangs.

Actually, I just noticed something. All my NCIS episodes are in .avi format and all the others are in .iso format. I'm willing to bet that has something to do with the issue.
Mntz - any chance of a version with black (or just dark brown) text in the upper area instead of white? This skin is beautiful and the only thing holding me back from using it is that it's too hard to read stuff.

I'll do some testing with other textcolors but it looks fine on my television atm. Most TV's look much too bright/vivid out of the box. :)

The idea was to keep it barely readable since most of the time the movie title is in the cover and the episode title is highlighted as your choice. Maybe i'll change it in the next update.
At the moment there is no way to increase text fontsize unless you alter Font.xml.
The flowers can't be removed maybe i'll make an option in a skinsettingpage but this will only effect the flowers on the Fanart page.

thanks for the help...
btw....no offense, cause i think you did a fantab job on this theme...but i wanted to make it more minimal.....thats why i want to remove the flower pattern on sides, and remove the images that appear on home screen list when item is highlighted. where are the images?....cause i only see .xml files in the theme folder.
i think a nice clean orange sheet, with the nice stone grey texture on bottom would make a beautiful contrast.
also....i noticed that my clock is screwy on bottom....the minutes appear in correct location, but the hour and : symbol appear higher up between the disc and power buttons.
The images are compressed and can be found in the Textures.xpr file.
If you want to remove them, just remove the corresponding lines in the xml files.

like others, I prefer to have both TV Episodes and Movies on the homepage. Thanks for putting that in.
I would like to know however, how I get each one to open to it's respective folder. At the moment, I open TV Episodes and it links to my movies!

I just installed the latest T3CH SVN (4-20-2008) and it seems to not play well with the Vinci skin. I haven't tried any of the other skins with it yet but this is how Vinci looks with it.

Hmm maybe some changes have been made to the xbmc code.
I'm using System.Time(hh) and System.Time(mm) in XML.
Does anyone know if there has been made a change to the system.time stuff?

One thing strange too was that the update seemed to bork up my music database and tv shows. TV shows would not play and my music db was literally gone. I went back to the 4-6-08 build and reloaded my music and all is well now.
I just registered for these message boards for the sole purpose of telling you thanks for such an amazing skin. As someone else who's bored of the usual web 2.0 rounded-corner look, I've got to give you big props for setting an ambitious goal and absolutely nailing it. There might be a few minor things that still need tweaking like the audio/video OSD settings, but overall it's amazing work.

You should put a webpage together to really let people get a good look at this and make it very nonspecific to the xbmc scene. That always helps bring more people in.

Can you please put this in the SVN?
I don't think it's a good idea to put Vinci in the official SVN since there are some pics in this skin where i'm not the owner of. For example the Vanessa Mae picture.
Vinci has been updated :)
Some of the changes:
- OSD buttons restyled
- added initial music OSD
- Fixed volume bar
- added episode icons to infopanel
- new programvisual in homewindow

The only thing I would suggest is to include an option to enable/disable the floral border designs. More importantly, a choice of color schemes would be great, as orange may not work for everyone. Thanks again, and regardless of the colors, etc, this skin is the new "default" for my HTPC.
I'd really like for this to be release on the SVN also. I would love to be able to change some of the those images in the home menu.

couldnt wait so i googled and found a program that extracts texture.xpr file even from protected one. search this XPR-Ripper but be fair and dont release a skin with other ppls media. i wanted it just for my self

QFT I also love the skin, but the floral design part just doesn't do it for me. If there was a non floral option this would be my skin of choice for sure! :laugh:
floral options is definitely something for the next update.
Colors schemes is a bit tricky, i've experimented a few times with different colorsetups but i was never pleased with them.
Maybe something like this is worth a shoot ?
-I'm running it on meedio and it looks great, my guesss is that with XBMC advanced graphic engine would run even better...

Cool idea, i'd add more transparency to the stonebackground part though.
The new update will be purely skinmodification options i guess :)

Sad, thought those were XBMC screenshots... Not much of a Meedios person, although it is pretty cool to an extent... but I'm an XBOX junky, so sadly, not my bag...

If something like that pitched up for the XBOX though... it'd be a serious contender for XBMC's best... but yeah, that's just my opinion... so many good ones around or coming out!

nah i changed the original vinci skin(from here). nothing from medioo. medio is really different. also i made it all sepia. and it has randimized backdrops in the home screen for each area.and more so yeah all me :). but yeah i dont no if i have to get the okay from the creater of the vinci skin to start a vincimod thread with download option.someone tell what is okay to do if you no.but its not perfect i dont now how to skin ive only been learning for 3 months off and on and i stop for some weeks and forget how to do thing.hahaha .i also needs alot more work.

Nice work, the mock-ups/screenshots look sexy :) I downloaded the build and tried it but I'm having tons of issues... I wonder if there is some kind of incompatibility with OSX? I get stuck a lot in the navigation, the selections don't work, icons dont show up, fonts overlap, OSD doesn't display well, etc...
Anyway, keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to a more stable release :)

I can only test Vinci on my Windows PC and Linux HTPC. It works without too much trouble on those platforms. Maybe some other people who use OSX can help you.

Something that you may want to look at is that any time I move my mouse in the video library the context menu drops down. If you could change the sensitivity or the place to mouse over I would like the skin a whole lot more. Other than that, it's a very good looking skin.
Am I the only one, when downloading this, who gets a size ~130kb file instead of the promised 6mb?
It downloads fine over here.

The download is corrupt, I have tried 3 times now and the winrar is showing an unexpected end of file and CRC errors......

Either wait until the author updates or roll back your XBMC to the date of the release.
Maybe by looking into the skinning tut you could update this yourself.I remember a thread somewhere that pointed somebody in the right direction of what you need to do when it comes to updating a skin.

I tried the skin with the latest svn version of XBMC but I can't see the mouse cursor. It reacts to mouse clicks and mouseover tough.
Otherwise it seems to work fine.

Edit: Updated to the latest version. The problem still remains, sadly. :sad:

I honestly thought all that was needed was to build it against a newer XBMCTex.exe which is all I have had to do with about 10 other skins to make them work with the newer builds of XBMC.

After looking at your concepts I must say the one thing I really liked about the old version was how strong the colours and contrast of the white on grey of the bottom bar thing was. I feel (These are just my own personal opinions) that everything fading into each other is a bit "airy fairy" and makes it not as striking which I think is what made the first version so successful.
Just realised the pure version is pretty much in that direction. Nice.
Just my 2 cents :D
