View Full Version : WMA Pro Audio Codec (Microsoft WMVHD/WVC1 Sound)?

Hey there. I am trying to play a WMV 720p reencoded to an Xvid. Usually for my HD vids I play them in DVDPlayer since it seems to drop the least amount of frames. When I try and play any of those Iguana WMV releases on usenet on DVDPlayer I get no audio. There is audio on MPlayer but the frameskip is unwatchable. When I check the info at the top on MPlayer, it says Windows Media Audio 9 and I can hear it (choppy but still there). When I check the info on DVDPlayer, it switched between MP3, MP1 and various bitrates but no sound comes out. Is this a restriction on DVDPlayer or... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*Will provide logs and/or more info if needed

yes, dvdplayer have no support for binary codecs and hence your proprietary file wont play. use (somewhat more) free alternatives instead and you'll be fine.

and logs NEVER hurt.

I think the original files were designed for use on the 360. The sound works in WMP but not even VLC. Well thank you Spiff, I guess I'll take a crash course in audio reencoding as there are a ton of these files that I would love to watch on the box. Thanks again!

Hi!

I have a Mac Mini 2.0 connected via S/PDIF to my reciever. Everything works exeptionally good in xbmc, i can view everything at 1080p (matroska, quicktime) except i don't get any sound when viewing Windows Media 1080p's.

Any solution? Sound works in Quicktime with Flip4Mac, VLC etc.

Any response appretiated.

WMA Pro isn't supported, and some other versions of WMA isn't either.

FYI; XBMC for Linux, XBMC for Mac, and XBMC for Windows, do not use MPlayer, instead they uses Team-XBMC's own in-house developed video-player (DVDPlayer) (http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=DVDPlayer) which is based on FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org), ...so if and when FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org) supports WMV Pro, then XBMC for Linux/Mac/Windows will (soon) support WMV Pro as well. Please read this article for more information:

Hello thanks for your hard work - I noticed in the 0.4.5 release it mention fixing a crash when reading WMA files, I haven’t tried any WMA audio files but i do have some video files conveterd for my 360, It will play these files fine video only, but I do not have an audio, These videos are WMV vid format with WMA 10 Pro audio.

What am i missing a codec etc for my hackintosh or?

Thanks

WMV is just about as bad as Real Video, proprietary shit is proprietary. ffmpeg would need support for it but it can't get it without some reverse engineering and I think most of the devs dont think it's worth of it.

WMV-HD Files are not crap - infact they look as good as MKV files - We all know it's dependt on the source! So I just asked a simple question. I guess i should of been more specific.

Thanks for Caring criticism

well, the issue is that nobody has reversed engineered the audio codec used in those files - most likely due to the ability to load the binary in apps like mplayer.

mkv files doesnt look one way or another, that is they look like a lot of 1's and 0's. mkv is a container.

Hello,

I've some WMVHD movies with WMA Pro 9 audio which, video playback works fine on XBMC Linux but the audio won't playback.

I found WMA Pro is not (yet?) supported, so i was wondering is there a possibility it is gonna be implemented or is it just not opensource so it can't be played on ubuntu.

Hi,

I am using XBMC for windows rev14125 i currently have windows XP PRO with SP3 and an Soundblaster Audigy with the SBAX_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0001 driver.

When i try to play an .divx movie everything works just fine, video and audio playback are great. When i, however, try to play an HD .wmv file it plays the video steam just fine, but the audio stream isn't played.

To highlight the errors.

I can play the HD .wmv files perfectly with windows movie player and i understand that it has it's pro's to have xbmc not depend on installed codecs in windows.

However, how do i install the codec wich i already have into XBMC? It's on my computer somewhere so it shouldn't be impossible.

Or maybe better yet. Would it be possible to just let the windows movie player play the files since that's already installed and working?

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated!
Martijn.

well, the issue is that nobody has reversed engineered the audio codec used in those files - most likely due to the ability to load the binary in apps like mplayer.

There's an FFmpeg GSOC project for a WMA Pro decoder. :)

i have been throwing as many file types as i can at xbmc for windows, and mostly it comes out great. however....

this file;

--- File Information ---
File Name: The Fifth Element 16x9 720p WM9 HD-DVD.wmv
File Size: 4,644,930,112 Bytes

--- Video Information ---
Video Codec Name: WMP v9 (VC-1 Simple/Main)
Video Bitrate: 34696kbps
Duration: 2:05:54

--- Audio Information ---
Audio Codec: 0x0162 (Windows Media Audio 9 Professional)
Audio Sample Rate (Hz): 48000
Audio Bitrate Type : VBR
Audio Bitrate: 385kbps
Audio Channel Count: 6

will play video fine, but has no audio playback when played in xbmc, however the same windows pc can playback the file fine in wmp.

the xbmc.log file shows "unsupported audio codec"

# WMA 9 (WMAv3), Voxware audio, ACELP.net etc (using x86 DLLs)

XBMC for windows does not use mplayer.

ffmpeg is probably missing an opensource decoder for it.

I am new to XBMC for Windows.
I am using XBMC (some years) now on the XBOX and do not have problems with playback of WMA lossless audio files.

When I try the same file within XBMC on windows (build august 23) playback does not start.

Using a WMA 192 KB/s does work

Any idea if this is not supported or do I need some configuration?

Gamester17

XBMC for Xbox uses MPlayer to load Microsoft binary DLL codecs for WMA Pro ("Windows Media Audio Professional") lossless audio decoder. XBMC for Linux/Mac/Windows does not feature MPlayer but instead uses Team-XBMC's own in-house developed "PAPlayer" and "DVDPlayer" players to playback all audio files, and niether of them can currently load binary DLL codecs, they only rely on FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org) (open source codec suit), ...so when FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org) supports WMA lossless then XBMC for Linux/Mac/Windows will not be far behind to support it too. FYI; FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org) developers is currently working on a WMA lossless codec, see http://code.google.com/soc/2008/ffmpeg/appinfo.html?csaid=124750E3DFF1EA23

Ive set up XBMC however I dont seem to be able to get any sound when playing WMV-HD files. MKV and DVD files work fine though.

Ive installed the Atlantis build onto a Vista HTPC. This feeds my Denon receiver via Optical output. I have set the Audio option to Digital within XBMC, and also 5.1 for the speakers. My mobo has onboard Realtek HD sound. I can play the same files using Windows Media Player and the sound is intact.

Any ideas what I may of missed?

Marcus - he was simply referring to the whole rest of the thread already giving you the answer... for now all our hops for not having multiple versions of audio files (and coincidentally video files with wma audio) rests with the folks coding for FFMPEG and them adding support for WMA.

My first post so let’s hope I get this correctly

I understand that ffmpeg now supports WMAPRO or WMA9. This was incorporated in SVN 17003. This was great news however I haven't been able to successfully play files with WMA9 sound

Here are the details

Tested on Vista SP1 and XP sp2
Tested XBMC SVN 17003 and SVN 17015

Error:

Assertion Failed!

Program C:\Program Files\XBMC\XBMC.exe

While playing WMV (HD) files there is no sound. I read in this forum that WM* files are not well supported.
Is it something XBMC supports? Or is it an issue with mplayer?

The audio/video codecs according to MediaInfo:
Format : Windows Media at 4 143 Kbps
Length : 1 GiB for 46mn 51s 486ms
Video #0 : VC-1 at 3 900 Kbps
Aspect : 1280 x 720 (1.778) at 25.000 fps
Audio #0 : WMA3 at 384 Kbps
Infos : 6 channels, 48.0 KHz
Language : nl

Is there something I can do? Install a codec? Or just stay away from all WM* from now on?

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for your time.

Fitho

I am running XBMC Live 8.10. But it seems to be an issue on Ubuntu and even XBMC Windows. File plays fine in Windows Media Player. I don't think the files use DRM, but how do I check?

Have searched the forums, but I couldn't find any thread about WMV audio issues, just some loose comments about little support for WM*.

spiff
2009-01-19, 00:17
we dont use mplayer ;)

anyways, the issue is that those files use wma pro as their audio codec.

the real solution to the problem; stop using crappy proprietary formats.
in any case, these are now supported in latest svn (using somewhat wip code)

Hello

I have a problem with playing some files.
I work with Windows Vista x64 SP1, everything play's ok, i have 5,1 DTS sound with DVD and 720p & 1080p files in Blu-Ray and/or MKV.
But some other movie files have only DD 5,1 audio, and then i hear nothing over mij Denon reciever.

Some of the files where i have no audio look like this:
Video Codec............: WVC1
Video Bitrate...........: 3,5 Mbit/sec
Video Aspect Ratio....: 1280x720 (720p)
Audio Codec............: WMA 10 Pro
Audio Bitrate...........: 384 kbit/sec (CBR)
Audio kanalen...........: 5.1 channels

Anyone an idea?

just wanted to say that i don't think that the sound included in

Terminator 2 - WMV-HD

disk is working properly. I just got the latest svn build (17626) and tried playing the track. Versus the normal current build available to download its still got no sound but is now playing at a faster rate, i'm guessing caused by the audio decoder getting confused. Checked out the normal log and saw

20:18:41 T:2968219648 M:2093244416 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Discontinuty - was:441946743.893333, should be:442068666.666667, error:121922.773333
20:18:41 T:2968219648 M:2093109248 ERROR: PortAudioDirectSound::AddPackets - sanity failed. no play handle!

If i can be of anymore help i'll gladly try anything.

Is it to be expected at the moment that the audio isn't going to play correctly.

Cheers

Let me start with that I have read everything I could found about wma pro support in XBMC (even the wiki which still states mplayer is used, which isn't the case for the windows version).

I just like to get some clarity and want to make sure it isn't just a setting.

My problem is that WMVHD plays fine in XBMC, both under XP and Windows 7.
I do have sound but the voices are coming from all speakers while normally you expect this from the center speaker.

Is anybody else having this problem ?

Thanks
