Not only some bugs, but lack of specific features that are needed for my to switch...Example:
Bug: It freezes when I either navigate certain menu's or play through a few files
Bug: When I switch views, some icons/images don't display properly (They disapear), yet this doesn't happen in Vision & PM3
Feature: Better choice of views (Wide Icons of course, and a List with Poster view [Like Vision has)
Fix: I've noticed some context menu's aren't fully done
There are some more that I can't think of..and I don't want to list every single one, simply because I know the skin is in Alpha stage and things will get fixed eventually...I was just stating my reasoning for not quiet using the skin yet as default :) Trust me, this is the only skin I prefer more then Vision, so I want to use it bad! :)
I really hope both these posts of mine didnt' sound negative at all, I really really enjoy this skin and I only wanted to say what a good job the skin is :D

Pike I do not know what your talking about
Please stop drinking so much k? Your going to turn into a Mermaid (http://pics.apartment808.com/users/NineT9mustang/PikeMermaid.jpg)
I have heard stories about the Swedes...
djh
the time is near... any chance we will get an early xmas present (since most of us will be with family tomorrow)?
It's 40 minutes 'til Christmas - go back to bed!
YO HO H- *cough*
I've had the flu, so this isn't quite as close to the full-featured beta version as originally planned. Lots of new stuff, though, all of which is usable, albeit in a prototype state. The good news is that the time I'd planned to take before Christmas I'm now taking afterwards, so expect a follow-up build real soon.
A quick overview of the new stuff:
- new OSDs (but Bookmarks isn't skinned as my XBMC work build was playing up)
- Music Roller object for music list views (depth shading to be added)
- new Adult homepage option (name your bookmarks Adult and AdultPics, you filthy buggers - saucy backdrop to come)
- revamped Library views with scrapers, applied to Icon, Wide, List, Episode and Poster views
- non-Library Wide view
- updated CD case image
- improved typeface for List views and miscellaneous labels
- further skinning of context menus, Add Source included
http://www.nashwanpower.com/download/xephyr/xephyr_flyra5.jpg
And Santa's got two bulges in his sack this year. Think of it as compensation for the new build being a little flaky.
http://www.nashwanpower.com/download/xephyr/xephyr_backpack4.jpg
Uploading to the server now, though my hosting provider is having a 'mare with broken pipes atm. Bear with me. Enjoy your other presents that don't have to be decompressed.
Okay, I'm just getting reset by peer errors over and over with this. Anyone with some server space feel like hosting for a short while?

What about uploading to a free file service? Use two different ones so people don't hit a limit.
you could also use bittorrent :)
I'm afraid that, due to some unexpected union action, Santa's having to use crapidshare for the moment.

I'll see to the Backpack4 download in the morning. Yo ho how fucking typical.

have fun
djh,
I removed all the guisettings but unless I'm missing something I don't see any changes? I definitely lost many of the things I loved in the patches... weather on home screen, video grid view, etc.
?
@Affini: The Weather thing's happening in the follow-up build due in a day or so, as are a few other features you might be missing. As for grid views - that's something I'm taking quite seriously so I need to speak to JM about the implementation. Rest assured, it'll be special.
@JezzX: Cheers, mate. I can't criticise Fasthosts as they've been great thus far, but this uploading problem is a pain in the arse. I'll split the backpack now and go the rapidshare route for the moment.
And just for the record, I fully plan on having a beta up, running and feature-complete for the end of January. As I've said before, the Christmas build was really just to give you something to play with.
D.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

...if you hosted Xephyr on The Official XBMC Skinning Project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xboxmediacenter) then you could upload and share your files/skins on SourceForge.net
Nudge nudge, wink wink... :;):
Marry X-mas and a happy new year everyone!
djh,
If you can, definitely take a look at the mods that have been posted, they are fantastic. My two favorites...
'movies' view
- shows description and cover in right pane (cover starts large then reduces, super cool!)
'grid' view
- covers only view, tightly packed on left and description on right pane.
thx for the hard work - I think Xephyr is going to become the most used skin soon, especially if you post in the SVN -- Nudge nudge, wink wink... :P

"- new Adult homepage option "
Heck yeah! Is "profile switching" working in this build? So far I've been switching to PMIII to enable my adult sources... or has profile switching been working all along and I havent noticed?
FWIW, everything's coming along just fine without SVN. Patience is a virtue. Thanks for all your hard work djh, and Merry Christmas everyone!
NS
I haven't got round to looking at profile switching yet. It'll happen sooner rather than later, though.

this skin is soooooo cool. Really really nice...
Found one issue: @720p ( other res don't know ) it is not possible to see imdb like xbmc-formatted movies info table
available for more detailed explanation if needed
merry xmas
ML, the skin ONLY works @ 720p presently. Read the thread.
also, I think it would make sense to use SVN simply as a way to get the skin up without having to deal with bandwidth issues. I'm not saying it has to get updated all the time, just is like 20,000,000 times better than rapidshare...
djh,
IMO... you are an amazing skin coder but by keeping the skin off of SVN you are hurting the skin's ability to grow/expand much faster to benefit all... including yourself who would not need to do everything yourself. We'd have all the patches that we've grown to love over the past several months in and you could focus on the major changes and more ground breaking stuff. ???
I would really love to see bigger posters seeing as this skin is meant for HDTVs like this -
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/9695/movies2ra3.th.png (http://img509.imageshack.us/my.php?image=movies2ra3.png)
instead of this -
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/387/movies1ti5.th.png (http://img509.imageshack.us/my.php?image=movies1ti5.png)
Just my opinion mind.
Also, there's some alignment problem with pictures in preview mode -
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8720/picturesff2.th.png (http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picturesff2.png)
Oh, and I can't turn off the 'now playing media info' on the home page or when the visualiser kicks in.

Noted. Will also give those larger posters a try once I've finished playing with the PosterWall.
djh - great job on this skin
is the new backpack ready for download? i didnt see a link
Mikey C
Anyone with an interest in the Poster Wall will be glad to know it's up and running (to the best of XBMC's abilities) and will feature in an imminent build, as will a fade-cycle of Weather and Time/Date on the usual panel. Screenshot (without scraper info - to be added):

This skin keeps having features so slick looking that I suspect that I will have to "upgrade" to XBMC-linux soon in order to fully enjoy them all :) Surely we're at the limit of what the trusty ol'e xbox can handle ?

Excellent stuff djh! Now I can't wait to get back home to my xbox and try it out properly
I'm also looking forward to seeing the poster wall. I've done a couple of rough versions of it for the Project-Fluid skin but nothing that looks as good in motion as it does in static screenshots  (A fixed focus panel control would be really good *nudge* *nudge* jmarshall :;):)

I'm testing on both Linux and Xbox so you'll know soon enough when that line's been crossed. I'll test the Wall views this evening. When it comes to picture fidelity, though, Linux does look better thanks to a modern GeForce card beating Xbox's rather naff chipset.

Due to changes in its handling of user customisations, it's imperative that you delete any Xephyr-specific settings from your UserData->guisettings.xml file. If this is the first version you've run, you can ignore this.
I ftp'd guisettings.xml to my desktop, manually removed all Xephyr settings with notepad, saved, then ftp->overwrite back onto my xbmc. Somehow when I re-booted my xbox, all of my custom backgrounds came up (although there were different links on the home screen than what I had). This seems to have resulted in some bugs that have caused me to revert to alpha 6 plus mod v7 until I figure it out...
Is there something I missed? The "reset gui settings" feature in alpha 6 was nice.
Also I almost messed myself up by forgetting to switch to PMIII before updating to alpha 7. Might be something to add to the readme. I'm not a noob, just made an honest mistake :)
But hey, the cover wall view in Music is VERY nice! Looking forward to poster wall like everyone else :D
NS
FWIW, the "vertical coverflow" view needs to show more of the next and previous album to be my default view. It's not terribly browse-friendly as it is. Again, I REALLY dig the cover wall for Music :D
this skin killed xtv off my xbox for good :)
cant wait for all the improvements!!
some things i miss at the moment:
on the "power"-button, there is no possibility to set the sleeptimer.
how do i call the "favorites" menu?
if in "files"-mode in the moviefolder, displaying movie information seems not to work..
also:
for the custom settings:homeshortcuts, it would be cool if instead of a boolean switch on clicking it you could directly set the path to a folder for that shortcut. (i somehow cant get to point the "arcade" and "games"-buttons to point to different folders, same with movies, adult and clips...)
if the last point is just some xml editing, could someone point me to the right place? i did some restructuring with xtv back then, but this skin is too different for me to understand easily...

djh_ I got one question and I guess I'm being a little lazy with this, but I don't see where stacking videos is possible. I looked everywhere under movies and did not see that option anywhere? Just curious. If not available that's no biggie. I can always join them together myself.

I'm sure that was in there once and got lost somewhere. I'll put it in tomorrow.
It'll be a short while before it's fully functional (XBMC currently doesn't support a fixed-focus, omni-directional panel) but I'm loving this view already. I did have a cool thing going on where the DIRECTOR field also cycled studio and writer info using the new fadelabel attributes, but the labels weren't refreshing at the same time so it all went tits.
The fade-cycling Weather/Time panel is also on hold until there's some <align> functionality in the control. No biggie, though.
Picture Wall and Music Wall will be added tomorrow, possibly with the aid of the Bourne trilogy, some Gaviscon and an entire bucket of Quality Street. Some more screens for the moment:

Thanks for this beautiful skin. The movie info window is missing.
Good Grief!
I've just read through this thread and I'm blown away... Like 9T9 said also I had a look at the begining and didnt think it was for me... how wrong was I!
Cant believe the Media Portal crew have scanked it to! One said "I have no use for Xbox or XBMC on my HDTV!" which made me laugh.. . but it seems they have it running in some fasion.
Keep up the amazing work!
Fingers crossed it stays within the humble xboxes power range to completion!
Can you add the removal of the RSS feed bar when disabling RSS feeds please - I'm sure it did this with one of your earlier versions?
very nice this new poster wall view!

Do fadelabels support the new text formatting and newline characters?
If so you could combine the heading and value?
Not sure if this has ended up linked elsewhere, but for whatever reason I've been inundated with questions over the last few days. So why not answer a few of them? I'm putting together a small Xephyr website over the weekend which will host a more complete FAQ, but here are some of the more popular ones.
Q: XEPHYR LOOKS GREAT ALREADY! WHY THE ALPHA TAG?
A: Because it's incomplete. So long as there are major features missing (Weather, Movie Information, anyone?) it remains alpha. Once the last falls into place it goes beta, and if all goes to plan it moves to SVN.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS THEN?
A: If you think Xephyr looks good now, wait 'til you see what a bit of polish can do. Every texture, object and layout in the Xephyr Alpha was put together at breakneck speed, both in terms of code and artwork, hence the rapid development and the fact you're able to use it now rather than wait indefinitely. Post-beta, everything gets improved - glass panels get etched decals (dividers etc.), animations get tweaked, effects like vignetting get added to fullscreen views, colours are improved. This last phase will probably take as long to complete as the entire alpha stage, though you'll get a steady stream of builds to enjoy in the meantime.
Q: WHEN WILL XEPHYR BE FINISHED FINISHED?
A: Never. Hah! Seriously, it'll only move to beta once I'm happy with the feature set, and to a point release when I'm happy that all of those features are as good as they can be. Then come things such as redoing every texture at 1080p resolution and pursuing really advanced, blue sky features.
Q: WHY ISN'T XEPHYR ON SUBVERSION ALREADY?
A: Partly because I'm too bogged down in actually making it (and paying the bills via, heaven forbid, real work), and partly because there are some issues with copyright. I'm dead set against using free fonts, for example, because the quality is simply inadequate. Until that's resolved, either through proper licensing or whatever, it's a barrier. Default wallpapers are another, though the SVN build would probably come without any wallpapers to keep its size down. Be patient, though - it will happen.
Q: WHY AREN'T YOU USING VIEWTYPE 'X'?
A: There's a very specific lineup of view types for Xephyr - more than I'd originally planned but not enough to completely overburden it. What's there adheres to a very strict vision which I won't compromise, no matter what pressure comes via forum posts and PMs. So by all means recommend changes and put forward ideas, but if the view you want doesn't appear you'll have to add it yourself.
On a side note, once the website is up and the skin is at beta, there'll be a section for user modifications which will be quite relaxed. So long as it's sectioned off from the 'trunk' of the skin itself, I don't care what you do with it - all mods deserve their share of applause.
Q: ARE YOU DESERTING XBOX IN FAVOUR OF LINUX?
A: No, but I won't rule out bonus features for Linux users somewhere down the line. The fullscreen Wall views are the only ones potentially troubling Xbox users atm, but I'd be surprised if Team XBMC didn't introduce some swanky OpenGL effects for Linux sometime soon. The one I'm particularly hoping for is alpha blurring (objects beneath glass are blurred, Windows Vista style). Xephyr will snap up anything of use so long as it fits, though there'll always be an Xbox-friendly build available.
Q: WHEN WILL XEPHYR SUPPORT STANDARD DEFINITION?
A: Officially, never. While I accept that not everyone has an HDTV (far from it if you look at consumer studies), Xephyr is an HD concept. Any concern for SD functionality would, imo, both delay and damage the result. If someone wants to batter out an SD version at some point, however, then into the aforementioned mod section of the website it can go.
Q: CAN I MAKE A DONATION?
A: No. Give it to your local animal sanctuary or something.
Q: ARE YOU INVOLVED IN THE MEDIA PORTAL VERSION OF XEPHYR?
A: No, but it has my blessing. I'm flattered, tbh. The only reason I haven't sent the author all my assets is because they're always changing. Again, beta should at least provide a milestone in that department.
Q: THIS CODE LOOKS COMPLICATED. ANY TIPS FOR MODDERS?
A: I'd call it 'a mess' rather than 'complicated'. Like I said, this early development of Xephyr has been pretty rushed, intended more to get all the pieces in place rather than polished or, in the case of code, documented and optimised. Some efforts have been made to comment the trickier XML, but I'm not going to waste time doing that when the code itself is so volatile. Sorry to sound like a stuck record, but beta's the time to look forward to.
Do fadelabels support the new text formatting and newline characters?
If so you could combine the heading and value?
Can you elaborate? I've found that fadelabels seem to lag behind when it comes to formatting attributes, though if you can merge multiple lines and font styles into single fadelabel strings then I'm all for it.
Can you add the removal of the RSS feed bar when disabling RSS feeds please - I'm sure it did this with one of your earlier versions?
Don't worry - I know you've mentioned this before and I am listening. I've taken my eye off the ball with this one, though, to the point where removing the RSS bar would mean adding dual positions for all the homepage objects like Now Playing panels etc. I'll get round to it at some point.
jmarshall
2007-12-28, 22:15
The fadelabel does support the formatting stuff, though if they're scrolling it'll look rather naff due to the way scrolling is computed (which one day I'll fix, but as it's only an issue here it's not a high priority!).
They don't have alignment at present (as they were always intended to scroll all the way to the left) but I guess I could alter this in the case of non-scrolling fadelabels.
Really, someone needs to knock up some sort of "transition group" control where the skinner specifies the transition between controls (fade, slide, zoom, whatever) and it cycles through controls.
Cheers,
Jonathan
jmarshall
2007-12-29, 11:14
Ok, hacked up the fadelabel changes that should do the trick - note that the alignment occurs within the posx -> posx + width box you define (unlike the stupid way the normal label control handles it)
Cheers,
Jonathan
In the first post the pictures say "Alpha7"?
In the subtext it also says "alpha7".
Is this version released yet?
Yes, go back a few pages for the download link.
what an absolute amazing skin, this is a defo replacement for mc360/pm3.
very good work to you mate and thanks for a stunning skin... waiting with drooling mouth for the 1st beta to appear with more features
cheers buddy
Clearly, screenshots don't do this skin justice!!! I never got enticed to try the skin by looking at the screenshots posted, but yesterday I decided to give it a try and, well, it's now my default skin for my two xbox's.
I found a problem with the skin. I don't know if I'm the only one but here goes the description:
tested on a xbox with 128mb and 720p output and on a dreamx-1480 with 1080i output. Same thing happens on both of them:
- sometimes when trying to play a normal video file, it will stutter making it unplayable. Same thing happens sometimes with the screensaver ( any of the complex ones ). they will draw at 4-5 fps.
- the problem is solved if I clear the background folder for videos and tv-shows ( thus disabling the slideshow for those items ).
I belive that there is something that keeps hammering the cpu even when playing a video.
forgot to tell, I'm using Alpha 7 and the first backpack.
also forgot to tell: latest T3CH ( 23-12-2007 )

A few more fixes and adjustments:
- Weather info can now (again) be delivered on the Home page, only this time it fade-cycles with the regular Time/Date info and uses the one panel
- The destinations of home menu options can now be defined via the Custom menu
- All skin settings can be reset to default via the Custom menu, also assigning default values to the above
- Live tutorials have been extended to every major screen, now fading rather than scrolling with correct timings
- Vignetting (optional) has been added to fullscreen views

I must say that you have done an AMAZING job with this skin. It is just stunning, but more than that it is also functional. It is rare to see a skin for anything that is so visually appealing and yet functional as well.
Unfortunately I am still stuck with a standard def 4:3 TV so using this skin out of the box is really not an option :(
I don't know if I am capable of doing it, but would it be ok if I was to hack away at this to try and make a version that would work on my TV?
You're more than welcome.
New build should be ready before too long. Just have to fix some new issues with Linux XBMC and pretty up the fullscreen views. I'm also fixing the dimensions for the standard Poster view - they've been off since day one. Also going to redo all the glass textures as the more recent ones (used for the Music view, for instance) were just recycled old ones, and it shows.

Dude, this skin plus the increasing amount of high def content that's *available* has me obsessing about LinuXbmc way more than I obsess about devouring the flesh of the living while riding on the back of a wooly mammoth. Yeah! :D

I personally grabbed 500+ posters: Changed its dimensions to fit into xbmc perfectly. I also edited all of them, I took away small fonts you wouldn’t be able to read (Like critic reviews), Quotes from Movie, Enlarged the Movie Title if necessary, etc.
I also have a personal SVN full of DVD Posters which has more then the above, I don't have the link handy, but if anyone wanted it, I'll search around for it...The SVN should have about 1,000 DVD Posters and includes all the TV Show Episode Thumbnails for tons of shows

djh,
Is there any chance I could get a hold of your source images so I could make changes where necessary as I work on the 4:3 version? I've already started and done a lot but its obvious there will be many areas where the underlying graphics will need to be changed to fit the square theme.

I've got to admit that I installed the skin over the v6 alpha and didn't follow instructions about removing settings for the old skin but my weather is all mucked up with the date and time at the top right of the screen. I'm guessing it's just me being a "dime bar" so I'll have a proper look at it tonight but I couldn't find where to change the weather settings either... :O

installed skin (still no weather)
I can see some references to weather in some of the files in the skin folder...

By editing guisettings.xml
from

<setting type="bool" name="Xephyr.weather">false</setting>
to
<setting type="bool" name="Xephyr.weatherpanel">true</setting>

I've got the garbled time & date again and I now have weather on the menu bar but when I click it I get a blank black page... help ? LOL
Thanks in advance...
Weather isn't working in the available builds. You don't have long to wait, though.
and I might not again :/ Especially with skins like Xephyr!
Of course you do. Or else we will burn your house down. ;)
Seriously I would hate to see the best skin out there die off.
Vision rules! You've done one helluva great job with that one.
Guys please keep this thread on topic... if you want talk about another skin please keep it in a different thread... this one is about Xephyr
djh,
Is there a way that you can have the skin reset/update GUIsettings.xml automatically while keeping the custom settings already in place... like the Custom Background Folders, etc?

I'll put it in the next build, though apologies in advance if it spanners everything up. Assuming I can get the default icons working without any hassle there'll be a new build tomorow night/Saturday morning. New stuff to include:
- revised Music Roller (repositioned with cases for all items)
- redrawn glass for all Media views
- v. early Poster Wall (the XBMC functionality just isn't there yet to make it work, tbh - pretty though)
- new Poster view
- support for the new Font resizing and fullscreen resolutions under Linux
- new Weather screen
- default wallpapers for Adult and Weather
- fade-cycling Time and Weather (optional) for Home page
- vignette effect for fullscreen views and Home backgrounds (both optional, though recommended)
- user-defined targets for Home page links
- option to reset all settings to Default, optionally leaving user-defined settings untouched
- new default icons with text overlays (fingers crossed - haven't tried it yet)
- more discreet default bookmarks for Adult sections :;):
Next stops after that will be finishing the File Manager and getting the Movie Information screen online, then a rather audacious fullscreen photo view and yet another OSD (I'm still not happy with it). Oh, and that Backpack will go up tomorrow as well - they finally sorted my webspace out.

Hey djh...any thoughts about resizing xephyr to 16x9?
DJH
Looking forward to your next release. Just one function I would like to see added if possible is the Movie Information screen as when using Library Mode sometimes the IMDB info drawn down is incorrect but with the skin as is there is no way to amend. Also in the Music View the Contextual Menu function doesn't display properly. This has been my default skin since your first release and I believe you have set a new bar with regards how skins should look.
An amazing piece of work to say the least.
D
I'll see about adding the movie information screen today - hadn't considered that that was how you amend wonky database info. Cheers for the heads up.
Hey djh...any thoughts about resizing xephyr to 16x9?
With the new font system it should work perfect in 16x9. I tested it with my skin and it looks just the same in 16x9 as in 720p without one line of xml. :)
Haven't tested Xephyr though.

Indeed it should be fine
Though not in the build available presently: there aren't any aspect ratio settings.
Is the download broken currently? I cant seem to download the skin from the first post...

Thanks very much.
Call me stupid but how do I stack AVI's in Xephyr using the pad?
Wow, great skin, really well done.
Couple of questions...
Why does the skin not remember which section was selected on the homescreen when it returns to the homescreen? Its always defaulting to Music for me which is a little annoying, I'd rather it remember the last one selected.
Should the background images not change to the section selected on the homescreen? Whenever I move between sections on the homescreen it still shows the background images from the Music section which as above is the one thats always defaulted to. (I have downloaded the background packs and I'm using them, they work fine once inside the section)
This is using the latest t3ch build and alpha7 versions of the skin.
Thanks!
The not remembering thing came about thanks to a weird bug that made certain backgrounds not fade in/out properly after returning to Home. Or at least I think it did. I'll have another look and see if anything can be done.
As for any other weirdness with background changing, I'm at a loss. I'm not aware of any other bugs in that department, so all I can recommend is the usual practice of wiping your GUISettings and trying again. The next build will have a reset option which makes that less painful, though I'm hesitant to release it yet thanks to a) a number of nuisances I've yet to iron out, and b) because it uses features which, until a new binary's released, will simply malfunction in anything but the latest SVN build.
Really lovin this skin thank you for all your efforts. I was wondering if it was possible to use some of the space on the list view to display a thumbnail file, I have knock together a quick mock up to try and better express this idea. What do you this possible or not?

@sp10
There is a zephyr mod a few pages back that has a Tvinfo and Movieinfo view that do pretty much what you have shown. In these views the thumbnail icon shows up on the right hand side of the screen for a few seconds then zooms out to a smaller picture with the video info underneath. It is very nice to look at and is my default view for tvshows at the episode level. Hopefully there will be something similar in the new xephyr build coming out soon. If not I will definitely be working on adding it. Cheers.
@DJH
Thanks for all your hard work. We are all anxiously awaiting your next build. On a side note: i know that you, like myself, are using the linux build of xbmc. I have successfully added buttons labeled "web" and "live TV" to launch firefox and mythtv respectively. The integration is fairly flawless already and will only get better. Have you considered adding new home menu buttons for linux users? I have actually been scouring the internet for backgrounds for my "web" button without much luck. As of now "live tv" shares backgrounds with Tv. It might be a little early to add linux specific features but i am sure you can agree the linux port is phenomenal already. Cheers.
thanks Rand Al Thor and thank you to skunkm0nkee for the mod.

I've found what causes the bug. Its switching the settings (up) menu off. If I switch the settings menu back on the homepage the backgrounds start changing as expected. Hopefully it should be an easy fix.
Thanks.

I'm sure that was in there once and got lost somewhere. I'll put it in tomorrow.
I also noticed stacking was missing. I guess we waite untill Alpha8? Or is this easy to add manually to Xephyr?

T3CH released the latest build today can we please have it? ;)
Hi.
Saw this skin yesterday and spent hours installing / configurating it.
I just love it!
However I had a lot of problems first fixing the movies settings, so that they get the information from IMDB. I've done this plenty of times before with other skins without problems. I got it to work after a while though.
However, TV-Shows is not showing properly, cant get it to work as you guys have it here. Also, when I enter TV-Show it wont save the "default directory" which is a network source. This is equal for Arcade and Games but works with Movies and Music. Very wierd... (and yes I have chosen "Set directory as default").
Well, like it a lot, will see if I can get any better hang of TV-Shows when I get home.
Oh btw, I also saw that the "Stacking" option might be a bit buggy, it says that I have it enabled in settings but still it's not working, the wierd thing is that it worked fine, then without any changes, just a scan for new files, it stopped working... ?
Thanks for the effort!

Very nice DJH, thanks again.
A word about the Movie Information screen. I was a bit lost as to what to do with it so I chucked something together real quick. When you select the option in the context menu it'll look at first like it's reverted to the usual media view, but you'll notice that the menu options have changed momentarily to "Change" and "Get Thumb". Both work, though neither is particularly pretty. Once you've done your editing just press back and the menu will return to normal. One quirk is that the scraper info doesn't visibly update while you're in the new menu, only after it's closed. You'll see what I mean.
That errant backpack is up in the other thread, btw. Well, it's uploading, at least.

djh,
just tested... a few issues...
1) I get some text overlapping the day/time on the home screen... it fades in and out.
2) I don't get weather info on the home page - is that in yet?
Definitely looking forward to completion of the poster wall and addition of the Movies view from the previous Alpha mods - I use these since it shows both text on the left, and the movie poster (If I have it) and the movie info on the left side. VERY nice since I don't always have the movie poster... and thus the movie wall would have a ton of blanks. ;)

When having 1000 of albums i often need more then the album title... At least the name of the artist would be nice.. And some kind of grid view would be nice.. Apart from that this is amazing!
Will u implement more views for music?

why don't you just use the library mode.... then u can view by genre, album, artist, date, etc...
Djh: I think this skin is incredible... It is my default now for whenever my xbox is hooked up to my plasma... One issue, when using the "episode" view in my tv shows section when one of the icons has focus the picture dissapears and all I'm left with is a black square. Just wondering if this was a known issue?
Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Of course i use the library mode :), anything else would be stupid. And using sort by album (for view of everything without clicking into the artist and the get to see the albums)
The problem is the views.. I (and many others i guess) like to have the whole info at the same time.. at least artist - album - cover . . the way it is now its only the album name and picture... i miss the artist info..
Is this making sense to anyone or have i misunderstood something here?

Im with you in terms of adding more views. I believe more the merrier.. i just set and forget.
but I do accept that Djh has a different view which places more emphasis on quality as well as the fact its his skin/time and he can do with it as he pleases.
big up thanks for this update, installing now...

Are you using Xbox or Linux? I ask because I have the same intermittent problem as the second screen you posted, though never the one in the first screen. I'd put my problems down to quirks in the Linux build as they've only happened recently.
affini:
Not sure about the overlapping text - got a screenshot? The Weather on homepage thing is in, however, but is disabled by default. It's in the Xephyr settings under "Home". And yes, the movies list view will be changing (actually quite soon) to something similar to the view you describe.
sandmanCL:
I see what you're saying but the Weather screen was a conscious decision. I don't want Xephyr to be identical or predictable from every angle, so I add a little spice here and there.
jazzen:
The drop in music views is only a recent - and temporary - situation. After the music roller object went in all the other views messed up, so I disabled them for the moment. They're next on the list, however.
competes2win:
Never seen that myself. When Xephyr goes beta and becomes available on SVN, I'm hoping ppl such as yourself will be able to seek out and correct these issues - I can't really fix something I can't see.
Xephyr gets a new, final name soon, incidentally. Name and website will probably appear when the beta version's done, which will probably be if/when the new PosterWall control gets implemented in XBMC. Fingers crossed.

Hands down for the great work djh_
Got the new build and all backpacks, and I started doing a big update on my database. I have two Xboxes (and one offline at present) and 3 different kinds of HD displays, so I plan on doing some big time testing to help nail down any weird issues, at least with the skin running on XBox :P I can do my own builds from SVN, so should always be current. I have some ideas for some minor detail tweaks here and there. Hope to post a couple mock-up screenshots later tonight once I am off work and have access to Photoshop :)

I'm using the xbox with the latest t3ch build installed XBMC-SVN_2008-01-06_rev11247-T3CH
Anyone know weather the movie views works in the previous build ok
Thanks for your reply djh hopefully i can sort it out soon
It only happens for me when I enter subfolders. In the root of a bookmark, everything's fine; enter a folder, however, and the wraplist problem arises. I don't see how the same code in the skin can produce two different results under these circumstances, so I'll assume it's an XBMC problem until told otherwise.
Well i rolled back to the previous build of xbmc XBMC-SVN_2007-12-23_rev11071-T3CH clean install i still have the same issues so i would think that maybe it is the Alpha 8 might go back to Alpha 7 for the time being

That is how the wraplist works. You have 4 items, so it'll wrap those around to fill up the space. Use a fixed list if you don't like this behaviour - it has a fixed focus point, but does not wrap around. I'm sure you can see that this is the only choice we have.

Was wondering if a space at the end could be added eg no Item for the last item in a wrap list (a tag to turn it off and on) The space would be scrolled across this would could show us where the list started and ended easier. I think they do this in Vista media center. Cheers people this skin is great work

Yes thats right, and also if you look at this pic (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot001bmpko5.jpg) the movie war is selected and it doesn't enlarge and overlap the others like in the Alpha 8 preview
I'll have a look over the code after completing this Capcom boss-a-rama.
djh, great work on alpha 8. It's looking really good. I am having trouble with the TV Show Information dialog. It's not opening, just like the Movie one was doing before you got that set up. Any chance you could just copy what you have for the Movie one to the TV Shows one and replace the fields?
Other than that, I'm just patiently waiting for the post-1.0 480p updates. I resized the fonts so it all looks decent, but there's still some minor overlap issues. :)
It's not opening, just like the Movie one was doing before you got that set up. Any chance you could just copy what you have for the Movie one to the TV Shows one and replace the fields?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean here - I'm not aware of any problem with the scraper dialogs for Movies, TV Shows or episodes. Or are you talking about something else entirely?
@jm
The problem we were talking about re: wrap lists concerns a weird glitch where the focused object doesn't zoom into its correct position. What's weird about it is that the skin code appears fine and has worked previously, and that the problem only arises when browsing subfolders. There's no code matching the odd dimensions you see in my99's screenshot, nor does this happen when browsing the root directory. That's my experience at least. I can PM you the wraplist code if it's any use.
EDIT: Actually, it's not subfolders - it's folders where aren't enough objects in the wraplist. The focusposition I've declared is 6, and I'm thinking that when there are less than 6 objects in the wraplist the focused object goes pear-shaped. Not had this problem before, mind. I'll tinker with the coordinates and see what happens.
EDIT: Okay, I've rejigged a few wonky coordinates and tried changing the focusposition number. Neither have had any effect - the focusobject still doesn't zoom in folders with less than a certain number of items.
djh,
Nice work. Just a comment... I think having a Recursive Slideshow in Pictures is needed.
I added the following to MyPics.xml:
<control type="button" id="7">
<label>361</label>
<include>mediamenu</include>
</control>
Thanks :)
Just to summarise after some fiddling, the wrap list problem involves the zoom animation not playing correctly in folders with less than a certain number of items. The focused icon instead adopts the start coordinates of the zoom animation and stays there without zooming to the end coordinates. I had some wonky start coordinates in the current release which is why my99's screenshot shows the icon out of position.
Arh k sorry for the hassle i just added more of my movies and it works perfectly didn't think it would effect it like that. cheers:grin:
I get that problem if I scroll too quickly through my films but not if I do it slowly.
A brief update:
- the Poster Wall now animates properly
- the flickering texture glitch in the Music Roller is fixed
As soon as this glitch in the wraplists is fixed I'll post another build.
jmarshall
2008-01-11, 22:35
I know the issue with the wraplist(s). We reset the focus of the item when we are rendering it normally (to make sure it's focus anim is disabled) so when the same item is rendered both unfocused and focused (small number of items) it won't zoom as it'll be immediately reset. Unfortunately it's not a trivial fix, but I'll see what I can do sometime this weekend.
Cheers,
Jonathan

hey djh... today I was tweaking some things on my xbox and just had a few quick questions.
1. Is there no option yet to set a directory for Weather background images? I found where to set the others...weather wasn't included, this might be a stupid question but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
2. Also, kind of along the same lines... I'm able to set my directories for the 'arcade' and 'games', however am unable to do so for my 'Apps'...
thanks for the great skin.
I'll sort Weather out in a second. As for a custom Apps folder, there was a reason for that. The problem with these custom menu targets is that, if the bookmark is either absent or invalid, they simply give you a blank media window. I wanted to limit the chances so Music, Pictures and Apps simply head to default paths - that way there's no confusion or inconvenience.
It's just a prototype and I'm not entirely happy with the layout, but it's up and running without any real issues. A mere wraplist, of course, but with the pictures updating in vague left/right directions. The PhotoWall title's a bit misleading as I'm still planning a more conventional fullscreen view for Pictures - I'll call this one PhotoDesk or something.
Oh, and cheers, jm, for the info re: wraplists.

Wanted to know if this was possible? And can I be pointed in the right direction for a read if possible.
I'm using the most current T3CH and Xephyr for skin.
These are just more personal intrest:
I use a controller instead of remote at the time so if I'm looking at the poster wall view in Xephyer, and instead of when I push (B) to go back I would rather go back to the home screen instead of the Library.
And how do I implement Wraplist or get rid of the Icon to take you back one screen?
Great Update fella,
The new padding Idea works well with the vegas view with anything else I don't know?? Im english so the $ doesnt fit for me.. Great Idea though, and I love all the additions.

Looking at the new photo view, I must say:
It's official now, you are a genius.

Any way of having a setting that could automatically move through that photos wraplist? I like it far better than a simple slideshow, but wouldn't want have to sit and hold the control the whole time. That'd also be a brilliant screensaver in XBMC. :)
Bear in mind, first of all, that the PhotoDesk wraplist doesn't scroll - because it can't. All it does is update the photos in a left/right direction as you navigate it; none of the objects actually move. As such, it'd make a useless "screensaver" as over half the screen would be static, though the thought of it running as a kind of automated gallery did spring to mind. I don't think the functionality's there to do it at the moment, however.

couldn't you make different desk which it switched between so images were not in the same position all the time?
I'm going to try using a fixed contents wraplist - might work.

Like the Photowall and Posterwall view a lot but (there's always a 'but' isn't there :rolleyes2:) how about hiding the top menu bar like the weather view? It makes it look even better IMO.
EDIT: And make the selected image larger?
There's a reason for the menu not disappearing which can't be resolved, unfortunately (complications with all the slide animations involved and its dual positions on fullscreen and normal views). As for the focus size, it might well increase though not by a great deal.
This skin just keeps getting better. Unbelievable how active this community is, even though the Xbox360 already has seen several versions.
Thanks guys...I just love my XBOX, thanks to you!

I resized the fonts so it all looks decent, but there's still some minor overlap issues.
Where/how did you resize the fonts? I'm using 16:9 and am experiencing font overlap.

It's possible that 16x9 isn't working properly with the new font sizing - I didn't get a chance to test it. You need to edit the font.xml file in the PAL16x9 folder, though not having done this myself I couldn't tell you what aspect to put. Soz.

Ah, well I just realised that I hadn't updated my XBMC since rev11071, updated now, still font overlapping. So I edited font.xml and cut all font sizes by approx 20% and now the overlapping issue is resolved. A few of the fonts are a little too small but I'm sure I can determine which ones are which and sort that out.
Also, just to let you know, with the latest build, I do not have the 'glassy' textures when viewing my music in library mode, or when viewing movie information in library mode. Plus, when viewing tv shows in library mode, the thumbnail for the highlighted episode is plain black.
Still, minor glitches, great work none-the-less
I don't have any of the problems you described here. It could be a weird SD 16x9 quirk, in which case I'm afraid you're on your own for the moment - I'm only officially supporting 720p.
Hitcher: I had a fresh look at the menu-hiding code for Wall views today and think I've fixed it. Just needed a different perspective.
EDIT: Fixed.

thought i'd just say something about the font issues with 16x9 to those who have it (although i run 720p myself)...
from the info given with the new t3ch build, there was this notice about PM3 and 16x9:
You must install PM3 skin CLEAN if you use PAL16x9, otherwise you get font issues
I don't know what that means, but perhaps there is some relation to the problem with 16x9 on this skin... and if that's the case, that would tend to suggest the problem is that the new builds have had some changes with the way 16x9 is displayed?

Wow, that's just fantastic news - thanks.
Haven't read the whole thread (who has, 95 pages doh!), but I just downloaded the skin and noticed that there's no options to browse for target paths when setting paths for tv-shows etc. A lot easier than to have to type in the full path yourself.
Also, more view options would be good for example music. And if it's possible to be able to scroll up and down among titles and not just left and right during poster/photo wall view, as you get to the top menu by pressing up.
Just some small thoughts.

Maybe it would have been better if you had read at least the more recent posts... djh has said more views will come in time, after all the skin is still in an alpha stage... also the poster/photo wall views are fixed now but he has yet to issue a new release....
To clarify, none of the wall views will have four-way scrolling for one very simple reason: you have to navigate off them to reach the menu. They scroll correctly left and right now, which is how they'll have to stay.

Oh I gotcha. Makes sense. Any possibility for a dedicated button to bring up the menu, specifically for that view, perhaps have the back button bring up the menu on the first click, exit on the second?
that would probably kill the continuity of the skin however...
Just wondering.... Keep up the good work.

I agree... I'd prefer a button for the menu. The 'Movie View' from the Alpha6 mods was fantastic... it could scroll 4 ways. What about implementing that?

Agree. For me, "poster" is working better than "poster wall." In general, right and left scrolling is not my favorite way of navigating my ~200 movie collection.
Man, I wish there was a different way to offer feedback than this - it feels like I'm just complaining, despite the fact that I love this skin :D

HI DJH,
I thought that Xephyr mod7 was perfect but you proove me wrong. I definetly see a lot of improvements in your new releases. Thanks for that!
I've just got a problem with the TV Show views which prevent me to go for the new release:
1. Wide icons in Library view: Having a lot of TV shows, I would appreciate if there was a view with 2 columns of wide icons in the left part (like in mod 7).
2. TV Info in library view: For some seasons of TV shows, I don't have a picture for the episodes. Your view with the thumbs of the episodes on the left and the infos on the right is then full with black boxes.
I would then like to have the view from mod7 where you have the list of episode in the left part and the infos + an animated picture (when there is one) in the right part.
Thanks again for all your work !

Seems as if the icon problems are a recurring issue. However for me it is only with the "episode" view, and only when the icon is in focus... when focused the icons suddenly are just the blank black boxes...
Whenever I have time, perhaps instead of complaining I will do some testing to see if various circumstances cause/prevent this issue...
I tried to fix this a couple of days ago by just reinstalling the skin while totally deleting my guisettings files.... And it actually worked, but obviously in the mean time something got corrupted or something, as it doesan't work any longer.
good ongoing work djh.

Just to be clear:
I don't have problem with the icones. I just mention that for some seasons o my shows, there is no Pictures in the Database so it's normal that the boxes remains black but it's not very beautifull.
PS: I didn't check if in th new version the selected icons is black or not. It's certainly black in the mod7.

Isn't that the scrappers fault for not finding any?
Also, the mods made by skunkm0nkee and not DJH himself.
God, I wish I could use this skin on my new HTPC - I even tried out MediaPortal but it's not even close to XBMC with Xephyr.

switch to ubuntu and u can. you can run mythtv too.
djh,
Is there a way to make the views using images use text if the image does not exist... so it would use the filename if the song/album/video image is not available.
This way we'd know what the selection is instead of a blank spot or a generic image that still does not tell us anything about the video/music.
If there is not presently, maybe JM would be kind enough to make this a reality?
Getting better and better. If I want to change the wording "clips" to "Anime" on the home screen, how would I go about this?
Thank you.

I think thats a nice Idea to implement in the next build, I think "clips" is part of "videos" so no need for it, therefore if it can be changed to "Anime" that will be really great, but the final decision is djh's.

This has been the plan for a while, hence my forum post from a while back about using IsEmpty conditions to create labeled default icons. JM implemented some changes but unfortunately it's not going to plan in wraplists - not the conventional ones at least.

I've considered the whole user-defined labels thing but there's little space to make it worthwhile. Also, given that the navigation from Home page to media sections is essentially a hack, I'm reluctant to build on it too much. I'd sooner chat with JM about how to "officially" do it, then work from there.

IsEmpty() should be working everywhere (including any containers) now I think?
It wasn't the IsEmpty specifically that was the problem. It was that when I used it in wraplists, I couldn't find a way to apply it to each unfocused item individually. When I tried using IsEmpty(listitem.thumb) it checked the focused object instead, making the labels disappear and reappear on everything at once depending on whether the focused object had a thumbnail.

Indeed - that's what I fixed ;)
Love the skin. One thing I noticed missing is the progress bar. I like the way it was implemented in the mods, maybe it can be done on one of the next builds. The only way to see the progress bar now is to show the movie info which covers up most of the screen and is in the way of the movie.
I also noticed when running the python scripts, for many of the media streaming scripts, you cannot see what item is being selected. Apple trailers works though.

I don't post often (but I do read regularly) but...
The XBMC Devs and the XBMC community really are amazing. My XBMC box "just works" so I don't do much with/on it other than enjoy it, but the Xephyr skin got me playing around again. Just amazing.
It really makes me think that the XBMC Linux project is definitely the future of XMBC. The (original) XB hw was proven to be incredibly robust but has been showing its age now for a couple of years, and being able to move XBMC to a "fully HD" platform, which XBMC Linux will allow, will really bring XMBC into the mainstream.
I'm a longtime AVS'er and, every week, new folks stumble onto XBMC and are _AMAZED_ at how robust it is.
It is this way thanks to good folks like djh_, the other skinners/scripters, and most importantly the XBMC devs who've been along for the _whole ride_.
Thanks fellas.
Amazing.

On the one hand I agree, on the other I don't. the beauty of XBMC on the XBOX, is how well the XBOX itself works as media hardware. It is a nice self contained unit, that fits well in your media cabinet, is quiet, and cheap and easy to get. Modding it is a bit of a challenge, but still rather simple.
On the linux side, you have to try and build some sort of unit similar to the XBOX which is a heck of a lot harder. I'll be sticking with the XBOX until someone can point out a unit similiar that runs linux and is easy to hook up to my TV, and easy to control with just a remote control.

hi i was wondering if it would be possible to make the wide icon view mode for tv shows a little different , kinda like the poster mode where the icons are closer together in a vertical line in the middle but the sellected gets outlined like in the poster mode. maby like in the music view how the album covers move, kinda like that. i think it would make the tv show view mode alot cooler imo.
also is there a way to make the random background selecter to pick quicker sometimes when you view files the background will go to black and take 5-10 secs before loading a new background , but in the main menu it works pretty well.
anyways keep up the exellent work , looking forward to next rls =)

The 5-10 second slow down when changing the background also happens to me ( I posted a problem on this thread related to this a few pages back ). It's not 5-10 seconds, more like 3-4, and it happens on my two xbox's, one at 720p the other one at 1080i. Both have 128mb ram and one has a 1.5GHZ celeron. The HDD's are fast and empty so no problem there either. The problem I reported about sttutering when playing movies is still present in alpha8. When playing a movie most of the time it will start stuttering. trying a few times solves the problem. If I choose a static background instead of a slideshow, the problem goes away 90% of the time. When using PM3 or MC360 I have no problems at all ( I really mean at all! ).
other than that, this skin is HOT!
I'll do some Xbox testing when I get a moment.
