there are only 2 views in Games (apps)? The tiled view would be perfect!

I'll look into adding it for the next release (I mainly use the Video views and occasionally the Music so those are the ones that I have concentrated on)

Also, I think the glass overlay is missing in one screen, Music I think - cannot remember.

I have checked through the Music views and it's there for all of them (the changes I've made to the views shouldn't affect the glass overlay on any of the pages). If you do see it again please let me know where it happens.

Not quite what I meant, I meant that once a track is playing you are unable to change the view.. ie change from list to wrap etc.

Aha, now I understand. I think the reason for this is that the now playing track info takes up the space on the right hand side and the area with the text for controlling the view is scrolled off the screen to the left.

Quite a few of the issues that people have raised relate to the fact that the now playing track info cuts in to the available space in the UI. The top and bottom are already a no-go and then when music is playing the right hand third of the screen is gone too.

I think I'm going to look into changing the now playing info so that it takes up less of the space available to the views. This is probably venturing into an area that should really be left to djh but I think I'm going to investigate it anyway and see what impact it has. (djh, if you are reading this and disagree, or have other ideas please let me know)

anther bug I noticed is that when you go to skin / custom settings and turn off the settings (down) menu. The visulisations that were turned off come back again in the home page.

Do you know if this is a bug introduced by the mod or was it in the original release? (I've not made any changes to the home page as far as I know)

I'll have a look into it anyway, when I get a chance, and see if I can come up with a solution.

I would have thought you should already have the standard views plus my Wide, Movie and Tiled Movie views as I assumed that the Clips would use the same UI as the other videos? (Movies, TV Shows and Clips all use the same video windows)

I couldn't find many images I wanted to use for music and other things in actual top resoultion, so I went for a scaled-down 1024 x 576 size. I don't even have a HD TV anyways - it's a 21 inch 4:3 - any I'm still using the widescreen Xephyr because it's the best skin. Smaller images load quicker and easier.. With the 1280s, I can hear the fan power increase with every menu scroll so this was doubly better for me as I'm always woried that the Xbox might break.

(If you have a 4:3 TV I would reccomend that you change the Xbox to 16:9 and resize the XBMC screen to have borders top and bottom. Videos and pictures (and maybe games?) can be fixed to play in 4:3 all the while.)

Here's some girlies for Pictures, some for Movies and a Jeniffer Aniston one for TV Shows (I thought it was suited beter there)

In an attempt to keep things somewhat organized I compiled my changes with Skunk's latest release and am calling it Xephyr_Mod_v5.

The main thing I wanted to try was getting Media Sources customizable to avoid editing the homescroller all the time.
Weather has been added and also a Home page option
Library options, and more...
Also Clips and Music Videos now have multiple views per someones request.

Check the readme for all the changes.

I highly recommend reseting the skin settings after installing this to avoid any problems.
It's now under the Misc tab in custom settings.

Skunk FYI,
I didn't modify any of your code just added your views to the bottom of my MyVideo.xls and MyVideoNav.xls
Also changed your Includes.xls (added some home weather stuff)

Hope you don't mind

If you feel this is worth including with your next releases please do so I don't have to mod again!

One thing that still needs some work is the home weather option (I garbled it together...you'll see).
I may tackle this soon.

This will probably be it from me for a while (damn work).
Anyways enjoy...Hope you like the additions.

nice work on the mods guys, have installed your MOD this morning Wir3d and have noticed 1 oddity, if you press the white button on a library screen (to update library) the glass panel in the middle moves up the screen, even though it does not show anything under it, and the side panel options open up as normal. No major problem, just a little oddity as I said :)

I don't have a problem with you changing the code at all, the more people that can get something out of it the better as far as I'm concerned. One thing I would say is that it's probably better to name your mod slightly different to mine just to avoid confusion?

I'll try and download it tonight (rapidshare and everything like it is blocked from work!) and I'll look at integrating as much of it as I can into my next release (as long as you are happy with that?). There may be some stuff that I leave out though as I am trying as much as possible to avoid changing too much of djh's original code. Where possible I've tried to add my code in addition to his (so that it should hopefully(!) be easier to integrate in the future) but I'll have a look and let you know how I get on.

Not me I'm afraid as I don't have that problem with mine. I haven't managed to get a look at your mod yet but once I do I'll see if I can identify the problem (I know I fixed some context menu issues in the very first release of my mod and it could be that your mod still contains those issues)

I see the problem with the context menu. Sorry about that.
I'll let Skunk put the fix in his next release if he plans to incorporate my changes.

You can fix it as follows in PAL/MyVideoNav.xml

Find
<animation effect="slide" start="0,0" end="0,-149" time="150" condition="Window.IsActive(111) | Window.IsActive(106)">Conditional</animation>

Replace With
<animation effect="slide" start="0,0" end="310,0" time="150" acceleration="-1" condition="Window.IsActive(111) | Window.IsActive(106) | Window.IsActive(132)">Conditional</animation>

Wow, v5 is great. The "reset skin settings" is a nice addition - it seems to have cleared up the issue where my backgrounds were not changing while scrolling through on the home screen.

WEATHER is a GREAT addition! Beautifully done, with a great default background.

I know you're sick of hearing it, but GREAT job, keep it up!

Oh, and ditto about getting svn access on this... Maybe you should ask team Blackbolt for space on their server - they sure aren't using it!

XBMC has its own SVN with a bunch of the more popular skins in it. No need to talk to another team. I even think djh_ was given access already, but said he wanted to get the skin further along before putting it in there. Hopefully he comes back and does that at some point, so we can all lend a hand once in a while. :)

Installed Mod5 one problem -

When I turn on Weather info the home screen, the time/date text overlap. e.g. time/date does not turn off.

Personally I'd prefer to leave the time/date alone and put the weather in the lower-right corner... like I have it in my PM3 mod. Anyone else like to see it like this?

Well I think I've pretty much managed to integrate Wir3d's changes into my code now. I was doing some testing and I have to agree with you on the weather panel as all the text overlaps so you can't see the time or the weather (I think Wir3d did say that that part was 'garbled' together anyway)

I think I'll have a look at changing the positioning of the weather so that it appears somewhere along the bottom (or at least somewhere where it doesn't require any changes to the time display)

Once I've done a bit more testing and tidying up I'll be ready to release the new version! (fingers crossed)

I've probably not done as much testing as I really should have (what developer does?) but I'm could get a bit caught up in things over the next few days so I thought it would be better to release now as it is rather than leave until early next week.

There has been quite a few changes in this release (which now includes changes from Wir3d's mod as well) and the main changes are as follows:

- added Tiled Movie view to Games area (requested by Affini)
- tidied up how colours for text are used and created defaults.xml in colors folder to control them (see Configuration Options above for more details)
- fixed Clips UI to have options for changing view etc (requested by mug2k)
- created new smaller, more discrete now playing UI for music
- updated Album, Artist, 3D List and List Info views to make full use of width (since now playing UI has been reduced)
- fixed clipping of selected album image in the tiled views when near the edges of the panel
- added Music Playlist UI
- tidied up code for playlists
- put a gradiented fade behind the discrete now playing music ui
- updated Wide Info view so that info is same position as other video info views
- split specific video or music includes from SSCustomContent.xml into new files (SSCustomContent.xml was getting a bit too unwieldy!)
- incorporated changes from mod by Wir3d (customizable media sources, weather etc)
- did a bit of tidying up of the newly integrated code
- added weather info to home page (bottom left hand corner)
- added wide view to programs section (requested by hicaow) also added movie view

New discrete music now playing:
http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7863/albumdiscreteplayinguf2.png

Download the zip file, unzip it and follow the instructions in the readme.txt

You must edit your guisettings.xml file and remove all the Xephyr settings before using this update
(there are changes to the way the settings are handled which mean the old settings could cause problems).

Xephyr Mod v6 (http://rapidshare.com/files/58702456/Xephyr_Mod_v6.zip.html)

a few issues...

no glass background on any Music view
http://members.cox.net/livin/1.jpg
http://members.cox.net/livin/2.jpg

weather info does not quite "fit" the black shaded are... I suggest making it taller to evenly surround the image.
Time/Date text is longer then the shaded area... can we make it longer?
I actually want to make the text larger, so an option for a longer & taller shaded area would be nice. That sized text is too hard to see.

In Video views, the objects counter info is not aligned properly

Sorry to see you are having issues with the mod but have you tried deleting your Xephyr skin folder entirely then installing a brand new fresh one (using djh's Xephyr_Alpha6.rar) and then installing my mod on top of it? Also please remember to remove all Xephyr settings from the guisettings.xml file.

I have tested the music areas and I do not have any of those issues with missing background glass or the bizzarre issue with the context menu having no background (that was an issue with the original release and with Wir3d's mod but I fixed that issue way back in v1 of my mod).

I noticed that your time format is slightly different to mine (mine is 24 hour whereas you have AM/PM) so that is why you have the issue with the time not fitting on the background. I have increased the width of it for the next release so it shouldn't be an issue again.

As for the weather not fitting in the area, I'm not sure what you mean as it looks like it fits in on your screenshot? It's maybe 1 pixel too high but I wouldn't go as far as saying it doesn't fit.

Hopefully that's covered all the issues you raised but if I've missed anything please let me know, most of the images you posted are not showing up so if there was anything else in any of them can you try and repost the images?

:grin:hi,
Congratulations for the excellent job done on the Xephyr skin. It looks terrific on my television. Actually, I am also using a htpc for HD contents managed by Media Portal. Is it possible to do a portage of Xephyr on Media Portal ? The MP skins are really poor compared with XBMC and especially this one. I heard that xml code of MP is similar to XBMC or maybe the opposite, but I have no idea about doing such a port. It would be heaven if it could be done:p. Thanx for boosting my not so young Xbox.

It doesn't remove the strings, just resets them to default.
It's not a bad idea to run the reset option although I believe the problem your having is from an incorrect .xls file.

Probably MyMusicNav or something like that. There may be one in PAL and 16x9 folders. Delete the skin and reinstall.

If you have the sources setup as they are described in djh's readme.txt then you should be able to set it up so that it 'remembers' to start in the TV Shows section when you click on the TV Shows button.

However you won't be able to completely hide all the other videos since pressing the back button when looking at TV Shows will always take you back to the full list of sources eventually.

Go into Home sources in the custom skin options and click on the TV Shows button. Then set it as "TV Shows" or whatever the name of the folder you want.

That is the sole purpose of the Home sources option.

I was trying to recreate the time overlap problem you were having in an earlier post. Are you by chance using a resolution other than 720p or
have a modified font.xml?

Good for those that like this skin though. And all new well managed skins are of course good for the community.

Not to hijack this thread but Pandora has reached a stop it would seem. I have in my spare time been working on somthing with pandora icons but it is not pandora and will be a long long time before I come anywhere near finishing it or probably showing it to the public anyway

Again, to echo what Jezz is saying and NOT to hijack the thread. However, I feel that Jezz is right with Pandora coming to a full stop for now (isn't this the way of promising skins?). It's had it's fair share of stop/start moments, and seems to be continuing that way.

I hope that something can happen soon, but I'm not convinced it will.

Wir3d - looks like deleting and starting over fixed it, thx.

One feature that would be nice to see is the ability to set the Home menu scroller links via the GUI. I use Files (not Library) for both Movies and TV Shows and they are both in separate folders under the same fileserver share \Media. I'd like to be able to set the settings in the GUI and not need to modify the XMLs directly. If there is already a way to do this, I must have missed it.

Also added some other stuff and did a little cleaning up.

Having an issue getting the home scroller mod working...For some reason it doesn't allow the <info> function on the home scroller :confused2: :confused2: Might have to choose a different control.

Anyways hopefully something soon. Sure wish we could put this in SVN!

When djh first announced this skin I immediately fell for it's fantastic looks and great design. When he then said that he had to take a break from it I was frustrated as I wanted to use it as my default skin but there were some parts of the functionality that I used on a day to day basis that weren't quite implemented.

That is what prompted me to start the mod in the first place and over the last few weeks I've pretty much implemented all the functionality I needed (plus a few other things that other people have requested) but it's now getting to the stage where any more changes could start to move the skin away from the original vision that djh has for the skin.

I now have some ideas for a brand new skin so am going to wind down the work on the mod and being focusing on the new skin. I am planning to release the final version of the mod later this week so if you have anything that you think should be implemented in that release please let me know ASAP (as it currently stands this release will have video bookmarks implemented, wider area for time display and a few other minor cosmetic changes).

Hopefully djh will get back soon and move the skin into SVN so that future releases can be better structured (having to install the mod on top of the original skin is not an ideal solution) and the skin will move from Alpha to at least Beta!

Skunkm0nkee,
Can you integrate my "font problem" (cfr post 545) into your last mod ?
Or do I need to do an other manual operation ?

Thanks for your help,

Thanks for your help,

Eric

If you can see those special characters in other skins then the issue is not specifically with the skin but with the fonts the skin uses (as you guessed in your post).

The way to get around this is to place fonts in the skin/Xephyr/fonts folder that do contain the special characters (you could try copying them from other skins and renaming them).

Nope, you only need to apply the latest mod. The mod itself contains all the files and is not a mod of the mod before - hope that makes sense!

skunkm0nkee... if you decided to continue work on this instead of (or in addition to) working on your other skin idea, you could always branch what djh has and create a starting point for an entirely new skin. That way when djh returns he can either pick up where he left off, incorporate just your updates and continue from there, or work with you on the separate branch. I think everyone wins that way, since the best possible skin gets developed and you're really not stepping on his feet.

Let's face it, the large majority of XBMC skins start as branches from other skins anyway.

Branching is a possibility for the future but it would most likely need the original media files from djh to get it going properly (and get it all in SVN too).

For the immediate future I'm going to concentrate on the new skin but I'll hopefully have other ideas and input for Xephyr along the way (it's still the default skin on my xbox at home after all)

I leave this place for five minutes and all kinds of crazy shit starts happening. Kudos to skunkym0nkeeman for all his mods - I'll have to work through the thread and find out what cool stuff I can plunder. Cheers also to all the ppl who've contributed wallpapers, feature suggestions and nice comments. All are appreciated!

So here's what happens now. In a few days, I'm taking a week off to return to Xephyr and bring it closer to where it should be. To that end, I've put together a To Do list which I'll be working from until the job's done. I'll post it both here and at the front of the thread, where I'll mark off each item as it's completed. At least this way you'll know how close it is to each milestone release.

I'm still deciding whether to release interim builds in the meantime. But if you have a feature in mind which isn't on the list, let me know.

Cheers

Concerning the weather backpack I'll try to produce some images using photos of mine ;)

Just 2 little problems using Xephyr:
I just realized, in Music Library mode, the wallpapers are from the Movie folder, not the music one...?! quite strange behavior...

And I have some problems with the views in music mode, too, like, the album art on the right sometimes doesn't take the shape of the perspective-square, don't know how to explain (once again sorry for my bad english ;) )

Anyway, both of these problems MIGHT be only on my install, maybe I didn't correctly delete the Xephyr settings ;)

I have to update XBMC anyway so I'll put a fresh xephyr install + v7 mod, might fix those problems.

To save memory etc and keep files loading "rapid" could you do the backpacks as xprs and allow users to change via the themes might help with memory issues i think theres a difference between bmp and png in terms on memory usage!

Not tested but worth a try i suppose...

EDIT : Just checked PNG is approx +40% smaller than BMP and contained in xprs might help as they are quick to load also.

Im absolutely loving this skin. Couple of questions though, I saw the djh is planning on adding episode view to tv shows. That means it will sort them by aired order correct? As it is now it only sorts alphabetically. Second, are there still plans on adding coverflow to the video library? I think a nice big movie poster coverflow view (similar to the one in xtv) would look amazing on this skin. Lastly, I use movie info view right now. Is there any way to make the poster stay large for a longer period of time before it shrinks to show the movie info? I like the movie info view but i have a 720p projector and i really like looking at the high quality movie posters. It would be great it they would stay large for say 5 or 6 seconds before shrinking. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

I'm pretty sure the skin already includes sorting options in the black menu bar at the top of the glass area. The default option is most likely Sort By: Name but you can change this to sort by date etc.

Edit the SSCustomVideoContent.xml file (I'm assuming you are using v7 of my mod?) and look for the SSMovieInfo include. Within that there are two lines which contain System.IdleTime(1) this is making the larger image appear for 1 second, if you want it to appear for 5 seconds then change them to System.IdleTime(5)

Check out PMIII and where it uses ListItem.Overlay images as it's the overlay which shows whether it is watched or not. You can then update the views in the SSCustomVideoContent.xml file to add them where you want them to be displayed.

You may also need to add OverlayWatched.png and OverlayUnwatched.png images to the media folder as I'm not sure they are in the current version of the Xephyr skin?

Love the skin. I'm not sure if it's the way the skin is or if it's just an issue with my skin. Is there something I can do to get my videos to play in a PiP window at the bottom of the screen while I'm navigating through the main menus? Similar to how we have the "Now Playing" at the bottom of the screen for music but have the video playing there kinda like what PMIII does. Another option is to have the movie as the background image (which it is when I move to the TV Show on the main menu).

Quick question. On your latest Mod v7 when browsing Music in list view if I play a song the Album Cover and song info appears bottom right how can I get it to display like DJH's original List View in that the backdrop moves left and displays the Album info to the right of the curved edge also if I bring up the SubMenu whilst playing a song it pushes the content to the right as expected only it offsets the backdrop image too far to the right causing a blank space where the Menu info appears. I have only tested this in Library Mode so not sure if its happens in File View as well. I'll check later as I'm at work at the minute.

I also got the watched/unwatched icon sorted so thanks to yourself and some others who gave me some pointers.

If you want to have the Now Playing working as it was in djh's then it's probably easier if you go back to the old v6 of the mod as there are a number of changes to views and everything in v7 to change it (it was changed as I thought the original Now Playing UI took up much space and left too little space for the rest of views)

I also got the watched/unwatched icon sorted so thanks to yourself and some others who gave me some pointers.
D

No problem, glad to be of help!

Thanks for the screenshots Eric.

I don't know the script specifically but it looks like the selection image that the script is using may actually be part of the PM III skin, in which case the script itself has been coded with PM III in mind. If this is the case (can anyone confirm it?) then you could get around it by placing a similar image with the same name in the media folder of the Xephyr skin.

Like most scripts its looking for list-focus.png and list-unfocus.png as they are kind of default names for the images from long ago I guess zephyr uses another name

Aah, makes sense. I'm not sure if they are in the skin (I never got the original media files form djh) but I do know that the highlight that is used in the list items in Xephyr is called listhighlightstub.png but since it's all black then you wouldn't be able to see it in that script anyway! :sniffle:

Hi, firstly - thanks for the amazing skin.

I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to post up how one would go about changing the functionality of the right thumbstick to bring up a quick shutdown menu like PM3?

I had a Google and the implication from earlier in this thread (page 10ish) was that it was present in an earlier build and was replaced by the popup system information panel. I tried a comparison of Alpha 4 vs Alpha 6 (4 was the earliest revision I could get) but couldn't see the option (in xml) - possibly too late a build? I tried PM3 vs Alpha 6 too but they're just too different for me to luck upon the answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

I don't think it should necessarily be the default function of the right stick, but it would be nice if there was an easy way that those of us (lazy sods) who want the PM3 functionality could enable it.

yeah, clear gui settings after each mod.

I get a weird (minor) bug also... There is no more "settings" backgound - the black X default one. It shows my Weather background in the settings and system menus. Anyone get this?

I reset gui settings and have v7. Home tabs are movies, tv shows, music, and weather. Set to display weather on home page, no time, no tutorial, settings menu enabled, fullscreen visualization disabled... I forget what else. Sorry, I can post more detail if necessary.

Is anyone using this skin with the latest XBMC Build? Oct 21, 2007 I believe. I've got a BRAND new XBMC Build with Xephyr and I can't seem to get it to load any games or applications?!? PM3 skin works just fine, when I switch to Xephyr everything loads just fine, but when I try to execute an app or another dash from file manager the screen goes black, and nothing loads, i'm forced to reboot the xbox. If I switch skins back to PM3 everything is just fine. wtf?

Ughhh my bad, it was a USB reciever for a wireless keyboard I had. Apparantly Xephyr doesn't know how to deal with this thing when it's plugged in and refuses to boot games or applications. Maybe someone needs to look into it as i'm using the "recommended" keyboard for XBMC as stated in the manual.

I'm not overly optimistic about djh coming back on this as he hasn't been around for quite a while now which is a real shame as he definitely had some great designs and ideas for the skin.

Maybe at some point soon I'll see if I can put together as many of the files as I can so we can at least get it in SVN in it's current form. We at least have a list of what functionality he was planning for the skin (if not the design skills and ideas he had) so I may take it up in the future and see what I can do.

At the end of the day I hope djh surprises us and pops up with the completed skin any day now but I'm not holding my breath.

I love the work djh has done so far, but I can see why people are getting anxious about the progress on Xephyr. djh hasn't made a post in 3 weeks. I authored TheTVDB.com, which is one of the main sites that provides TV data for HTPC projects. At one point I was able to put a lot of time into the project, but hit a point where I had so much going on in "Real Life" that I wasn't able to finish many of my tasks. I was lucky enough to find someone willing to help out as much as possible, and the project has benefited a lot from his work.

I hope that if the same thing is happening with djh, that he brings help in on this project. Obviously skunkm0nkee has done great work in his absence, but is understandably hesitant to continue without djh's approval. I'm sure it's also hard without the original Photoshop files.

djh, if you read this, please don't be offended. It's a testament to the amazing work you've done so far that we're all pushing for progress to be made. Please consider adding this to the SVN so people can help out, or pass the original files along to skunkm0nkee so he can get stuff done on his own. I would be willing to bet that skunk would try following your to-do list to some extent as well... to try making this skin what you really want.

I'm still here, though I'll admit this is the first time I've visited the forums in a while. Real life has indeed got in the way over the last few weeks, though I still plan on making time real soon to get Xephyr stuff done. The longer I spend doing other things, the more enthusiasm I'll have for this when I get back to it.

My plan atm is to have a near-beta build ready for Christmas Day. Just to reiterate what I said earlier (at least I think I did), the SVN upload will happen when it finally goes beta.

wouldn't it be easier and quicker to collaborate with some other coders on this project?
and if that were the case, wouldn't it then benefit everybody to put it into SVN? As it stands right now, there's not even a single definitive place to go to get the skin, because there have been so many mods and revisions and updates released. I can host one if and/or give people FTP space if that would help. I have a huge hosting package which barely gets used by my various projects. Affini, don't you have access to my FTP already?
Basically at this point I think it would help to have a place to point to when people inevitably come into the thread and say "OMG WHERE DO I GETS IT?! ME WANTS IT! MY OWN... MY PRECIOUS!!!"

I actually had been meaning to try this skin ages ago but was holding off because I didn't feel like reading the entire thread. It's been unusually slow at work lately so I have been able to get totally caught up...

And as with everyone else, this skin is totally awesomecross. It pretty much made my roommate shit his pants, and it now graces both of our HD setups :D I am so enthusiastic I am like "OH MY GOD I WANNA CODE STUFF ON THIS SKIN!!!! AHH!" :D

Keep it out of the SVN as long as you need to. Until *everything* is locked down in terms of layout/design/style sheets it shouldn't be made publicly editable. I know everyone's chomping at the bit, but if the people who want to help don't have exact guidelines for what needs done then they'll make guesses and assumptions and you'll end up with a different designed-by-committee version of your original idea.
Even if there are lots of cool things put in by well meaning people, if they don't fit in with the "Xephyr philosophy" they'll be detrimental despite the editors best intentions.

Sleepy is right... sorry Radio but your view is very ANTI-OpenSource.

Radio's view is fine if the skin was not being used on an OpenSource app. But Radio calls detrimental is purely opinion with no basis in logic that I see, and none given in his post.

Just because a person submits a mod does not mean anyone needs to use it, thus no harm done.

And, to use Radio's own words... having "*everything* locked down" defeats the purpose of both OpenSource (for private use) and the actual Mod itself... the whole point is that most of use want to mode for our OWN USE... If someone else wants to use my mod, great, if not... that is fine too.

DJH,
You work is personal, I understand 100% - but you initially shared to benefit the community, and you have. But to continue providing benefit there is no reason not to post it in the SVN during your continuing construction... this is what SVN is for.

MikeBeecham
2007-11-08, 11:57
Affini I can understand where you're coming from, but let me try and 're-jiggle' what I think Radio was saying.

Already, I am noticing with the Fluid project that EVERYONE has great idea...it's natural when you have a community of so many talented individuals. Everyone wants to put across thier perspective or opinion of how it should work, what functionality, what scrapers, kind of navigation, etc. All these things in themselves are not a bad thing, and there is sense to the saying "The sum of the whole is greater than it's parts"

However, you also need to bear in mind what DJH was saying in his original post. He started this skin for himself (a little like Jezz's Basics 101 skin). He noticed that none of the skins that had been created had quite what he wanted...so got to making a skin himself. Now, unfortunately for the community, djh's work and personal life has made it a fact that he cant dedicate as much time to the skin as he once did...AT THE MOMENT.

What this means is that he has not yet finished put together the skin that would suit his purposes. Whilst I agree fundamentally about the OpenSource policy, i think it's unfair to ask djh to release his work to the community for them to do thier thing, when he has not yet finished doing HIS thing with it. I also understand that putting the skin into an SVN MAY help speed up the process...but without a collaborative relationship between those coders and with DJH himself, how would the eager-beaver developers know that they are continuing the skin in the way that DJH imagined it?

For me, it seems a little selfish. What is essentially being said is this...

"I know you havn't finished the skin djh...but I WANT IT NOW. Release it on SVN, so we can have this NOW, instead of having to wait for you to get you're heiny in gear"

...I don't know, but it seems a little selfish and disrespectful to djh.

My perspective (from experience already) is this: Lock the skin down until DJH feels that he has done what he wants or needs to do with it, or until such time that he feels ready to release his baby. You need to remember that this is HIS vision...djh is still pregnant with this thing, and as such I think the community should let him give birth to it properly.

Nick8888
2007-11-08, 12:08
yes but id hate to see this go down the road of the nzb streaming development(which still gets bumped often) which was worked on 6 months ago and I think this is essentially what affini is getting at.

MikeBeecham
2007-11-08, 12:12
Indeed...but anything else is disrespectful to the owner / creator until such time that they either decide to leave it alone, or happily pass it over.

This is djh's baby and it's great that he has released alpha builds for us all to use and play about with thus far but if he chooses not to put the skin in to SVN until he's ready to, then that should be up to him.

I know there are people out there who are chomping at the bit to get updates to the skin (I'm probably one of the worst culprits!) but that is because of the work that djh put into making it such an excellent skin in the first place.

It might be a long wait until we get the next updates (Christmas seems so far way at the moment) but I'm sure once it arrives we'll all be glad we waited. :;):

Radio, what makes you think that putting something into an SVN archive means "everyone" can "edit it"? That's simply not how things work. If it is, go put a patch into XBMC's source right now. I'll wait...

As to being "disrespectful" of djh's wishes or whatever, I think thats extremely silly. For an XBMC skin, because the engine allows you to essentially do whatever you want, the initial design and layout is really the key to defining what each skin "is". In this instance, Xephyr has already been fundamentally established in what Microsoftian language would call its "look and feel". Thats the main part of the skin that requires the big ideas and self-expression, and thats already essentially done. The things that are left to do are mainly annoying code work required to get the skin usable. Have you seen what the keyboard window's XML looks like??? On PMIII (for example) its over 1,500 lines!

Finally, the design of the skin, as well as XBMC itself, is set up to allow the end user as much control as possible. You choose the icons and layout style for your media. You choose how to view that stuff. You choose how things are named. etc etc etc. Hell, the skin already has the end user setting up the Home page contents. Does that make it seem like the intent of the project is for DJH to control everything and do everything himself without anyone else contributing?

But what do I know, its not like I started a skin project before or anything...

szsori
2007-11-08, 22:51
This is gonna keep going back and forth. I think we all agree that djh has done a good job so far and will probably continue to do so as he gets free time. I think we can also agree that we're all anxious to see progress on this project. Finally, I think we can also agree that it's ultimately up to djh what he decides to do, and we can just make requests to help sway his decisions.

Personally, I would just like to see progress made on this project. There's 3 possibilities to achieve that goal:

DJH continues work as he has time, releases the beta at some point, and then puts it into SVN.
DJH brings one or more other skinners on to help him achieve exactly what he wants done, and makes (or allows them to make) official updates as progress is made.
DJH immediately puts the project and files into SVN, with a roadmap of things he wants done and guidelines for patches to be accepted (graphical elements being in certain formats... things of that nature).

I personally see #2 as being the best possible solution for everyone involved. DJH is able to release a skin that exactly fits his concept without having to put in nearly as much work. Skilled skinners are able to contribute to a skin they'd like to use themselves. End users are able to see faster progress on the project. I don't think DJH should completely hand over this project to the community... that's not what open source is about. However, I do believe he can make use of the community to achieve his goals faster, which the community would appreciate and benefit from as well.

No matter what he decides, though, keep in mind that he has put his time and effort into this for free and we owe him thanks for that. He owes us absolutely nothing. Be respectful toward him and he's going to be far more likely to listen to your recommendations and requests.

OK, so back to the skin...

The biggest issue I have is that many items are difficult to see from 10' away on my 57" 1080i screen... yes, it is big and still hard to see, IMO, with my near perfect vision (checked a few months ago by a Dr)

I'd love to see larger fonts-menus-overlays and more contrast with text.

I think the Vinci skin does a nice job with text size and the overlay size to screen size ratio. One example...

SleepyP
2007-11-09, 10:31
doesn't doing the text display introduce a series of potential problems? What I mean is, the above the example shows "Disturbia". One would have to assume this is the title of the movie as it exists in the library database. What if the current item isn't in the database? Is there a way to make the overlay invisible if the info to be displayed is blank? otherwise you'd end up with a graphic sliding in on top of the video with nothing on it, which would look weird.

SleepyP
2007-11-09, 10:35
oh and I second what szsori says. the community's going to need to contribute anyway for doing things like real-world testing to help get the skin looking good on all sorts of displays. We've got a 32" LCD and 50" DLP at my place. So far haven't used the DLP yet, but it looks perfect on the smaller LCD.

What's so bad about xephyr that there's suddenly this huge surge in people that are DEMANDING svn? The only things I'd like changed/polished up have to do with adding/deleting stuff from the library and other administrator type stuff (well, I guess I'd like a bigger album art/progress bar when playing music with fullscreen visualization). If it's that much of a hassle to me, I'll switch to PM3 to get it done.

But that's just someone on a 51" CRT projection TV running his xbox at 720p. I guess some other people are chomping at the bit...

In the end, I'm just thankful for this skin that has renewed my obsession with xbmc, and can handle waiting until xmas if djh wants me to. Thanks to everyone that makes this the best open-source project to date.

p.s Oh, I'd like to put up a pack of wallpapers for the Weather tab (since no one else really has) in the next few days. Check the Xephyr Backpack thread if interested.

What's so bad about xephyr that there's suddenly this huge surge in people that are DEMANDING svn?

I have a TV that can display 480p and 1080i, but can't handle a 720p signal. This means that I have to run Xephyr in 480p, which still needs much more work than 720p. 1080i mode is completely unusable, but I would use 480p anyway. Also, the context menu in the file manager isn't skinned at all, making it very hard to read. Without using skunkmonkee's mods, the skin really needs much more work.

Like I said, it's completely up to djh to do what he wants, and we're all very thankful for the work he's put into this so far. I think we're all just anxious to see some sort of progress on it. Just look at djh's to-do list and you can't argue that there's still a lot of work to be done on it. Not saying Xephyr is bad (hell, it's good enough to be my default skin)... just saying time/work will make it so much better.

I posted in the middle of the moral discussion around posting to SVN. Am trying to get my hands on the mods that have been done for this skin - have it on my 40"LCD and its just lovely.

Ive tried all the links posted in the forum but am unable to download - any have a link to these mods which works

If it's not possible with the skin itself, try creating a copy of the skin for each user and doing it that way.

Make sure you download the main files from the first post in this thread and just copy over the mod.

I had this problem remove it zephyr completely then make sure the guisettings.xml file has no references to xephyr in it and the stick a fresh copy of the skin back on and you should be sorted

Yes this happens if you don't follow the readme and delete all references to Xephyr in your guisettings.xml.

I did that before installing V7 and again after I had the first set of problems. I also tried a fresh XBMC deployment, + Xephyr, + V7 before starting up the new XBMC for the first time to ensure no settings creeped in.

None of the above addressed the problem.

What resolution you running your xbox at as i had a similar problem in the past with memory running out causing movies not to play. I use 1080i and find as long as i have about 20MB free when on the homescreen that I don't have any problems.

Ok i tried everything and i've managed the first bit.

For info

if you cut the "music" entry's from the <content> section under the <control type="wraplist" id="300"> entries in homescrollers.html and paste them behind the "tv shows" entries so you get this

You shouldn't have any issues with SkunkmOnkee's v7 Mod as I have had that running no problem for quite a while now and never have had any issues with the backgrounds changing during navigation. Try deleting all traces of Xephyr in your guisettings.xml and restarting your xbox so that your starting with a clean slate as I know some of the changes made in the past have caused issues similar to yours.

thanks man, i didn't have any entries for Xephyr per say as I'd been working with a copy while i was messing around. So i deleted all the entries for my copy and the copy of my skin. made the change to homescrollers.xml as above to set music as the default and set everything up from scratch. I found the problem only occurs when you customise and the home page. Everything works fine until you change the settings and set "settings (disables UP menu)" under home shortcuts. Do this and the backgrounds stop changing on the home page while you navigate. Did a bit of digging and can see there's two includes in homescrollers.xml one for when you do use the up button to get to the settings ( <include name="scrollernobutton"> ) and one for when you don't ( <include name="scrollerbutton"> ) now apart from the difference in wraplist 301 where the "settings" item is added in scrollerbutton for when you disable the use of the up button i cant see a great deal of difference between the two ???

So i'm afraid lack of knowledge has me up against a brick wall again
I do know it's not a problem with mod 7 as the same thing happens with just Xephyr Alpha 6 without mod 7 installed and it doesn't make any difference if your using custom background folders or the inbuilt background pictures. At the moment i cant see how the disable up arrow customisation get applied. I can see it writes
<setting type="bool" name="Xephyr.settings">true</setting>
in guisettings.xlm when the customisation is on and sets it to false when its off but beyond that what the skin does with this entry so far eludes me.

golly this skinning lark is complicated, my respect of people like DJH and SkunkmOnkee just goes up the more i get into this.

Wir3d

The Disable Up Menu button should trigger "Skin.HasSetting(homesettings)".

In HomeScrollers.xml:
If the button is not checked it uses the functions between <include name="scrollerbutton"> & </include>.
If the button is checked it uses the functions between <include name="scrollernobutton"> & </include>.

That's the basics of it.
If you absolutely would like to disable the up menu I can look into it some more.
However if it's working without I would leave it until djh comes out with his next official release :)

Anyone using this on linux XBMC ?

Mostly everything works fine except the background for media listings.

Haven't got a screenshot handy but I get mostly black on the left hand side so the text is unreadable unless it's selected. The background graphic seems to be offset too much to the right, as it's there (the curve of it basically starts next to the text list) just not in the correct spot it seems...

I tried using alpha 5 and this works fine...

yeah, i've modded my xephyr skin extensively and one of the things was the home page. basically with the wrap list, it will go back to the focused position. by default, it's the 4th menu item that you have visible (by settings, not by eye). by moving music in your case, it changed the 4th item to something else. you did the right thing by reordering it. (i changed mine to the third item, centered the focus area, and changed the order to my liking)

as for your second point, this has nothing to do with the mod really, but with backgrounds.xml. basically the order is not the best for transitions. i didn't bother changing it all, but i moved the settings and shutdown menu to the very bottom of the code to fix some of the transitions.

let me know your problem and i'll try to let you know specifically. my code is really different so i'll try to figure out my changes.

as for the right-thumbstick-click, that shouldn't be information (i believe that's the white button no?). it should take a screenshot for you. either way, you can change buttons to do what you want my editing the keymap.xml in the UserData\ folder of xbmc. try out the wiki if you need help: http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=Keymap.xml

Hi manturafs, thanks for the quick reply!

Basically I'd like for a shutdown menu to come up when you press an arbitrary button while playing back a video. This was the standard functionality in PM3 (assigned to right thumbstick click) but in Xephyr it brings up a panel with system information (hostname, uptime, etc as opposed to the white button which brings up media information; bitrate etc).

Having *any* shutdown menu appear would be great - it doesnt matter if it doesn't match the skin, if it's text only, or any of that sort of thing - it's just so I can shutdown the xbox while playing media (rather than drilling out to the main menu and navigating).

Given that there doesnt seem to be a button (joypad or remote) currently assigned to the shutdown menu in xephyr I didn't think it would be possible to use keymap to do it? (that's why i was asking about adding a function to bring up the menu, i was planning on later remapping that via keymap to suit my needs).

I must admit, if it wasn't already clear, that I'm rather new to 'hacking' XBMC config files. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've taken the latest tech release and dropped Xephyr and Mod V7 on top of it - completely clean. I then start up XBMC for the first time, and do all the normal configuration stuff. That's all fine.

Now, if I choose to shutdown while playing a video something odd happens.... The shutdown menu will appear, I press shutdown, and it appears to try to shutdown. What actually happens is that the video disappears and the 'xbox' background comes up, the navigation bar (grey bar behind the menu text) disappears and the xbox freezes.

This only happens in Xephyr, and only if I select shutdown while playing a video. This happens whether I use the above right-click fix or whether I jump back out to the main menu and do it (while video is playing). This does not happen in PM3.

Any ideas what might be doing it, aside from a potential lack of resources?

Cool, I'm glad you're still here.

DJ, do you think that the movie posters could be bigger and with less boarder?

Thanks man.

@ DJH. I have been running this skin on linux build since not long after you released it. Gotta say, I absolutely love it. It looks amazing in 720p on my 120in screen. I even put together a whole bunch of Christmas backgrounds. The family loves it! Definitely looking forward to a new release. Cheers.

djh,
on that last screnshot... will the grid view also have the right-side film info ability? This would ROCK! I love the grid view since it can hold more covers but having the info in view is perfect!

A few small requests...

Grid View:
Can you make an option so that the non-selected are not dimmed and your glass frame is the 'highlight' for the current selection?

All Views:
If a cover does not exist can you have a default icon? Right now it is just empty... a bit confusing to navigate.

thx!

I'm stoked for the next release!

Not so much "before Xmas" as on it. Won't quite have the full beta feature-set but should be pretty close.

Hi,

Don't you guys think that it will be cool to create a new "splash logo" (logo that shows up when Xbox boots) for this amazing skin ?

I would love to come with proposals but I really suck in design.
I hope that a skilled designer will have some ideas...

Regards,

Eric

I just discovered tonight that there's a Linux X server app called Xephyr... how very inconvenient. What with the talk of splash screens, betas and such, I'm thinking it's time to settle on a final, different name for this thing. (rubs beard)

What about just changing the spelling like Xeffer, Xeffir, Zeffer, Zeffir or Szeffer?

Unless they've asked you to change the name, I'd say the projects have different enough scopes that the same name could be used for both. Xepyr(linux) is a small embedded part of the X Display Server and Xepyr(skin) is an XBMC Skin.

Agreed, Xephyr to me only means one thing.

I won't argue with that. The name stays.

@ djh
I am setting up a "guest" account on my linux box. I have the profile set so that settings are all locked. However, i am still going through and removing buttons to clean up the UI. So i have removed all the "setup", "refresh", "Get Thumb" buttons. I even have the home scroller so only wraplist 300 (movies, music, etc) is available. I am still having trouble finding a few buttons though. When i right click on an album and it brings up the context menu with delete, rename, queue etc. I would like to remove delete and rename. When you right click on a movie I would also like to remove that "settings" button as well. Any chance you could point me to where these buttons live?

When i am finished i hope to have a completely "Idiot Proof" ui that even my grandmother can navigate through without being overwhelmed by buttons. I would also feel comfortable that my nieces and nephews couldn't find a way to screw anything up if left alone for an hour. I would be happy to share the finished product with anyone interested when it is finished. Sort of like a Xephyr(guest) mod. Cheers.

If i am not mistaken the delete rename selections that appear in the menu when you right click, is a setting you can do in the XBMC settings menu. There is an option there where u can disable the functions to delete, rename.

Rand Al Thor
2007-12-16, 22:11
Yeah, i know you can do that in the settings menu. I thought i had set that. hmm. anyway, i am wanting to completely remove certain buttons from that list from the ui. For example if you click on settings in the video context menu you will be asked for the master code to change the settings. I would like the settings button not even to appear. I guess i am being a little picky but oh well. Cheers and thanks for the response.

You can't without editting the code.

ahh, then i think i might have found a bug. It might be just with the linux build. I checked to see if allow delete and rename were checked in the settings menu. They were greyed out. ie not selected. I then logged in as guest and went to music files view. Right clicked on a folder and clicked delete. It removed the entire folder from my linux box with no problem. The profile is set to read only. Can anyone else confirm this?

Got it figured out. Allow rename/delete has to be UN-checked before locking the settings of a new profile. Once locked these settings are greyed out even if you have entered the master user code to change the settings. The only section that seems to still allow delete/rename in this particular situation is music. Not sure if this is really a bug or just a quirk. Cheers.

hey , just wanted to say what an awesome design xephyr is , really love it.

but unfortunately its too many bugs for me atm , but i will definately get it when its finished. youve got awesome taste in what works.

i dont know if this is helpfel for you or if you already know this but here are some bugs ive encountered on my xbox.

1.Cant play videos with build 7 implemented into build 6.
2.sometimes the xbox will freeze when flipping through files escpecially pictures.
3.sometimes cannot choose new background picture , and even if resetting goes to a blank bg.

well those are the ones ive encountered that were the most frequent.

but i hope you will still continue with this awesome project.
as they say rome wasent built in a day =)

cheers and have a happy holiday =)

djh_ This skin is absolutly amazing  This whole time I've only seen screenshots, and it didn't really appeal to me (Don't like the grain), but wow, after actually trying this and seeing it in HD, I must say this skin is gorgeous! Not nearly what I was expecting! Seeing those 720p wallpapers on a tv amaze me, a completly different experience then viewing them on a computer screen :)

Anyway, I wanted to come in and tell you good job :) I really hope you get things worked out...I would love to use this skin (some bugs prevent me from doing so :()

I've been gone for 6 months (here for christmas), hopefully when I return in the summer things will get finished :) Looking forward to it, again great job man wow. Pictures dont do this skin justice at all

Not sure what they are talking about with bugs but I've exclusively used this skin for months and do not have any issues that stop me from using any functions.
