I had a divx movie 1280x544(720 oar) which was very dark so I turned up the brightness and noticed that the brightness of the black borders on top and below the actual movie was also affected by this option. I think that if possible only the movie part of the screen should be affected by this option. Probably the same with contrast which I did not mess with in this case

not possible the way it's coded now, as those 2 options are tied with 'xbox hardware'. we ask the xbox to make the screen brighter, it's not 'video stream' that gets processed...

You should not use those XBMC contrast/brightness options anyway as they are 'loosy', you should instead tune your TV/display correctly using it's own built-in settings. Get a DVE and/or AVIA setup DVD to calibrate your screen correctly
