Support for streaming audio authentication?

This seems to have been discussed about a year ago with no real conclusion.

The problem is that with DI.FM Premium streams (and presumably other similar services) XBMC does not display track info. It just displays the DI.FM username and password along with the IP address of the stream.

It would be realy great if XBMC could add support for this. Other media players like Winamp and WMP all can support this so it can't be that hard.

I thought authentication was already supported for streams with a http:// URL?, ...however I doubt support was added for shout:// based URLs so that is probebly what is lacking in XBMC?

How exacly do you start a stream (via a .pls or .strm file or other?)?

To start the stream, I saved the playlist from the website in .m3u format and then moved that over the the XBMC/playlist folder on my xbox.
