i searched the forum for "safe mode" but didn't find anything on this.

basically here is my problem, i was using unleash x dash and after finding myself running xbmc almost everytime i boot i decided to copy the bits i got 2006-11-29 over to the C drive and rename the default.xbe to evoxdash.xbe (or whatever it was booting from before)

my bios booted up to XBMC and naturally it made me very happy so i started messing around with files and replaced the startup.wav a few times but about the third time i replaced it and then reset the xbox it now hangs on a black screen after the bios boot screen

so i'm thinking maybe the startup.wav i copied last was bad or something anyway can i press a button on the controller to skip all that so i can make things back to the original startup.wav

hold white+y while starting. will give you the fatal error handler / error recovery console.

cool tip thanks...

that actually gave me some red/orange text the first time i tried it -- something starting with "XBMC" and then a message about the "network cable unplugged" which it was

so i plugged it back in to the router and couldn't get any text to appear holding down white+Y

so i unplugged the network cable and did it again but no text just a black screen.

is there a special trick to holding down the white+Y or something

but seeing those red letters on the screen gave me hope at least "XBMC" i just installed FlashFXP to try it as an ftp client (instead of buggy windows explorer) and thought maybe copying over that wav file had inadvertantly wiped the drive or something :p

swapping out to a different startup.wav seemed to fix all my problems (except for the hanging when i go to watch apple trailers that aren't one of the ones on the main page)

note to self: if you need to just ftp in to your box to fix something then you can boot to a safe mode by holding down WHITE + Y buttons

yeah now i'm playing around with putting .jpg and/or .tbn files named the same as the xbe file so i can customize my emulator links

i put both the jpg and tbn in the directory and it worked as i had hoped but then i removed the tbn and it still worked and then i removed the jpg and it *still* worked...

anyway is there a shortcut to refresh the bookmark / xbe link icons?

(looking for where they are casched now)

all thumbs are cached using a smaller image for memory and speed. they are all in the userdata/thumbnails folder. there are self explanatory sub-folders for each media window type (music, video, etc)
