40MB, get here... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WRKWXB19

tested on XBMC 2.0.1 build 2006-12-17 rev 7377

I've added a ton of custom images for the backgrounds plus made some custom buttons and such. The goal was to keep the PM3 theme true and arrange the interface to be more elegant and also easier to navigate for the non-tech guests that I have. All the tweaks are small but make large improvements IMO.

I have included some XMLs as examples. All you need to do is customize the Home.xml, DialogSubMenu.xml, and Sources.xml to get it set for your own use.

Enjoy!

I prefer the button scroller too. I like having direct access to my most used items and scripts... that is why I put it in. Also, I added some animations too :;):

Enjoy!

just downloaded it and looked at the files.
tipp: smokehead mentioned a while ago, that bmp loads quicker than jpg (backgroundpictures in home).

well, it will take a while, before i can realy test it.

they may but they also take up more hd space... and I have seen zero lag with the images... I fade them in a bit for effect.

you need to make sure to have a skin.xml file in the root of the folder. Either copy the original PM3 skin.xml or copy/paste the below code into a new one...

<skin>
<defaultresolution>pal</defaultresolution>
<defaultresolutionwide>pal16x9</defaultresolutionwide>
<version>2.1</version>

<!-- amount to zoom skin to remove overscan compensation -->
<zoom>1.1</zoom>

Other skins loaded the same way work ok.

Did you look to see if the skin.xml is in the folder called "Project Mayhem III"?

I have the same problem. The skin.xml is in the folder. I had originally tried to just overwrite the existing Poject Mayhem III with this new one and was able to switch to the new skin, but upon reboot all I would get is a black screen. I am using 2.01 also.

try this link...

Affini - yes i checked for the file skin.xml, even replaced it with a new one made from the code you posted above.

Ryker, i get nothing, just tells me I need a v2 skin.

Will try removing the original PM3 skin when i have more time and replacing it with Affini's

For those having problems make sure you have the entire RAR extracted into it's own folder - call it whatever you want. I just replace my 'Project Mayhem III' completely.

Here's another RAR (http://members.cox.net/ltek/Affini-PMIII-UserData.rar)with UserData files. You do not need them but it shows you how I set up my RSSfeeds and Sources.

I love this skin - I just would like to be able to hide some of the buttons/options on the main screen as I do not have all those items - i.e. - home control, shoutcast, etc. I actually would like to change a few of them. Can you tell me which xml file these might be located in so I can make some changes.

I do have one question about the skin - it doesn't seem like there is a "now playing" screen like PM3 has - am I missing this somewhere?

Thanks in advance. Nice work.

Thank you for the compliment. I really liked PM3 and just wanted to maintain the integrity of the original skin while adding a few features and making it more efficient for my uses.

You can see the XMLs that I modified within each folder. Just look for any files that end in .orig - these are the originals of the files I mod'd... from here you can change the files. You are likely to want to look at Home.xml to change the buttons in the button scroller.

The Now Playing screen is there, unmodified... I have not deleted any screens from the PM3 that comes with the builds.

Thanks again. I do see all the button dialog in the Home file. Just a quick question - as I know enough about xml to get me in trouble. If I don't want to delete your button information but would just like it so they weren't visible do I put <visibile> no <visible> as noted below?

</button>
<button id="5">
<visible> No <visible>
<description>TV Shows</description>
<label>TV Shows</label>
<onclick>ActivateWindow(MyVideoFiles,TV Shows)</onclick>
</button>

Thanks again. I love the mods you have made - trying to customize it a bit more for myself.

Hi Affini,

Great job on the skin mods ... very nice indeed.

Would you consider placing your version of everything required to run the skin in SourceForge or other location? Would make it easier to update/build as you make enhancements.

Cheers,

KZ

Love this skin/mod!! I can't believe I just now found it. I've been looking for something with a customizable home menu for quite a while. Great job!

Anyway... Do you plan to usew the new XBMC logo in you home.xml? It's an improvement over the old one IMHO.

I may... but I'd need to redo the home screen complete since they changed it a ton a while back. I'm using an older version. I'll see what I can do when I get time.

I had this same issue, but it is there....

On the home screen press left (or was it right) several times, it'll go through the icons at the bottom left and then the highlight will seem to dissapear (As far as i can tell), clicking "a" now will take you to the settings.

Hope that helps.

P.S - Nice mod!

Yes, I hid the screen from sight. I do not understand why it would be needed in plain site ;)

I like the PM3 look/feel but the usability I always felt was off... not efficient so I changed the interface to be more logical and user friendly... for the average user (non-techie person).

Glad you like it... enjoy.

No the skin is great, and if you know how to get to settings, then it's no problem.

I think we just got stuck when trying to change from your skin to another.

No problem though now we know.

A hidden button that you have to press isn't very "logical or user friendly".

Maybe show the button when focused? If it already does this and I misundertood peoples posts, ignore this.

Do you suggest a button that is triggered by psyonics? ;)

A hidden button is logical... and that one iten is not meant to be friendly like the rest of the interface... it is meant only for the admin to know about. I wanted the button "out of the way" so it did not clutter up the interface or have people try to use it that shouldn't... you can password protect it too.

This is just a great skin. I really like it...

I'm a non-techie person but I managed to change the home menu so i just got the menus I need. :grin:

But I can see you have changed the way the small preview of a movie is shown when you go to the home menu. Instead of being shown behind the grids as the backgrounds pictures it's in front of the grids and much bigger.

Can you tell me what I need to change in the home.xml so the small preview is shown as in the original PMlll ??

Again a great job you have done to tweak this great skin.

Thanks very much for the super-quick reply. Really cool to chat directly with the developpers in this forum.

I have looked through this threat as well as through the forum. Unfortunately, I didn't find an answer to this fairly easy question.

The home XML contains for a button (for example) the following info:

</button>
<button id="4">
<description>TV Shows</description>
<label>TV Shows</label>
<onclick>ActivateWindow(MyVideoFiles)</onclick>
</button>

Where is it specified where "MyVideoFiles" leads to? I would like to change this in the XML files and not over the GUI.

Thanks and best, Steve

That is built into the skinning engine in XBMC, nothing to do with the skin itself. It tells XBMC which view to start with.

You should start reading the Online Manual to understand basics of XBMC and skinning before you attempt to mod anything.

Thanks again for your quick reply. I thought and hoped that I could this easily without getting into the world of modding. Will read the manual and hope that I can make some progress here.

I have two more questions regarding the skin (though they might again lead to the same answer -> modding):

(i) Is it possible to jump from the hom directly to the movies in library view(instead of having to arrive at the movie folder and then open the folder to arrive there? I guess it comes down to modding againm isnt it?

(ii) When I go to library view and scan the movie section, it scans all the movies and not only those in the selected folder. I searched the forum and also the manual and didn't find help. Probably has nothing to do with the skin either, but you might have an idea.

Again, any help is highly appreciated, Steve

Livin

i) yes - read the online manual about setting views and bookmarks
ii) not a function of the skin; I don't know, ask for help in the help forum.

Aff, something I want to run by you for your opinion....

The one view for the music library... I'll call it a flip book with the album views and the data at the bottom. What do you think of something similar with the Video library where the covers are in a straight line? No data under it except the name thats there but the covers in a flip book style similar to the music library view but a bit larger. And, how dificult do you think it would be to impliment?

Harsh,
Sorry for the late response... I did not get an email on this post.

I want to make PM3 a widescreen skin... e.g. make the left-side menu dissapear to allow better use of the screen real estate. This would allow for something like you are talking about. But more then I can tackle myself. I'm better with the photoshop side of things then the XML itself.

I do like the scrolling covers look. Tilted looks nice or like these...

You don't like it, don't use it... why waste the time posting?

Not everyone will find everything useful, or atually understand the design... maybe both for you?

If you actually read the info I give in the first post, the skin DOES have a hidden settings button, for good reason. There should never be a reason to constantly mess with the settings so there is no need to have it on the main menu, or in plain sight. To have this on the main screen is actually poor GUI design.... or do you put the device manager shortcut on your windows desktop?

... I don't care either way.

What's useless is commenting on a skin when you didn't even take the time to learn how it works.

Obviously everyone has different tastes, but I agree with Affini that there isn't a need to have the settings be a visible control on the home screen. Once it's set up, there's not a lot of reason to be constantly going into settings.

I finally got around to trying out this skin - thought it was the "bees knees" with the direct TV and Movie links on the home page. I like the settings thingee hidden as well. Like you said, no need for joe blow to have access to it.

I do have a couple of questions though.

1 - Is the skin set-up to always load each area in file mode as it is doing on my set-up - or am I doing something wrong? If this is the way you have set it up, can this be easily changed? I always use library mode and when I select either of the links (TV/movie) file mode is the result.

2 - Hiding some of the buttons on the home page. I realise you can set the visible tags, but I'm not sure how to set "invisible" tags. Do I just change the </visible> to </invisible>? or do I have to add another line? The manual only mentions "visible" tags

Thx in advance. Great skin BTW :)

1 - Yes, it loads in Files view. You change this by changing the bookmarks... do a search on it in the online manual and it will tell you the options for Library views.

2 - search the onlin manual for visability... it will explain it :)

Livin

on 2... visability is conditional... thus true/false sorta... so not need to have an opposite tag like </invisible> -- hope that helps.

Yep...been there...didn't help much. I always go to the manual first, but not knowing a lot about all this sort of thing makes for a hard stretch. Often, the answers I do receive from posting seem more cryptic than the problem :rofl: :rolleyes:

Ah well, that's life I guess - so back to the drawing board. Even with your advice, the manual didn't offer me much hope. Time to reconsider my options.
