View Full Version : Adding a DVD-ROM Drive through a NAS?

I know Xbox DVD drives aren't exactly the best around (ie: they don't read everything, etc.), so I was thinking of adding a second drive to read my burned media that doesn't work in the original XBox drive. Btw, I haven't actually played around with XBMC yet ... more in the planning stages right now.

I can get my hands on an external DVD drive (USB connection), however, it sounds like it would be a lot of coding work to have XBMC actually recognize the drive if it were plugged directly into the XBox (although that would be a really cool feature). So I was thinking of setting up an old laptop running some sort of NAS software and connecting the USB drive to the laptop. Before I go to the trouble of trying this out ... does XBMC support such an arragement? Can I play normal DVDs via NAS without adding a lot of extra steps (ie: having to browse thru folders to reach the NAS, etc.)?

All suggestions and comments are welcome,
Thanks,
Harry

P.S. As a side note, does XBMC support DVD menu's yet?

XBMC has supported menu for a long time..

you won't need to browse, you can just setup a bookmark to the nas (make sure it supports samba aka windows filesharing)

it should work for non encrypted dvd's. for encrypted ones, it could have some troubles.
