i would really love to see support for flash animations and games for the xbmc. i love looking at flash animations online and i would love to be able to download them and put them on my xbox and view them at any time especially on the tv. i am really surprised that this has not been mentioned yet and not on the to-do list.

it has been mentioned for xbmp many times, but the problem is that thzere isn't a good open source flash viewer we can use.
i have a large collection of swf files on my computer. but as lazy and convinient i am, i would like to watch them on my xbox instead.
i know it's a difficult thing to do, but it would be totally awesome!
love your work with the xbmc!

i agree but is that what a media player is for? maybe!!!
personaly i have a large amount of flash stuff myself (joe cartoon etc) but i think i would prefer to see xbmc rival or better windows media player first..
i personally would love to sit down at my tv, grab some ginger-ale and watch a marathon session of strongbad. i even tried to use some flash->avi convertors i found on the internet with the intention of making a dvd, but they were all crap when it came to anything that had actionscript. by which i mean not only interactive stuff (which is a big *duh* in terms of supporting via an automated program) but also stuff that wasn't. like skipping over a bunch of frames. the video came out fine but the audio became unsynced.
i think someone actually requested this feature before, maybe for xbmp, but it was turned down on the basis that there aren't any good open-source flash libraries. which is kinda true (i only found one, and it hadn't been worked on for a while) but even a mediocre one would be better than nothing.
1. there are no good opensource flash libraries
2. even if there was, i think there are lots of features requests which have a higher priority

if you users want to see this then you should lobby thatcher ulrich (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tu-testbed/) and/or ignacio castaño (http://www.gameswf.de/) to port gameswf (http://www.tulrich.com/geekstuff/gameswf.html) into an xbox lib
cool... they do seem to have an xbox port in plan too. *:d
as a sidenote; if this was indeed ported to xbox and then ported into xbmc and made availble for the xbmc gui there could be some really useful stuff made as for improving usability. and ofcourse also cool bells & whistles stuff http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
it would be nice to use a fla or swf as a background or button in xbcm (for interface puposes).
dont u think so?

i already talked to turlich a couple of months ago and he was inetersted in flash support for xbmc, but his player was far away fmo perfect playback for most of the files. but his main goal was to invent an easy to use menu engine for games and apps (and a port for the xbox) anyway. i don't know how far he developed it in the last months (i am subscribed to the cvs mailinglist, but don't understand a word of whats going on there).
so maybe one day we can use it for menus.

what you wrote hullebulle, i would like nothing better, but i have to agree with frodo. and i'll just add that, only the day that it's pretty "easy" to add support in using a 3rd party flash player xbox port, it seems to me relevant.
maybe xboxmediaplayer.de could mention this as a posiblity for a future idea and do a "contest"...
will xbmc ever be able to play .swf files?
just think. xiaoxiao animations and strongbad e-mails on my tv.
that would be definitely cool, but i don't see how it would be possible right now. there's an open source projet to do a free swf player but it's far from being finished yet. maybe someday ...

yeah maybe some day. but what about linking to a contest on some xbox scene pages and other places, on front page??
i have a few friends who are crazy enough to like joe cartoon.
was wondering if anyone would be intrested in the linux version of flash 4 source, would help ya's in making your own screensavers

hi,
ysbox has portet the gplflash swf decoding library to the xbox.
what's this?
~~~~~~~~~~~~
this is a decoding library for macromedia flash™ animations, compiled for use
with homebrew applications compiled with the xdk.
due to the number of requests for flash support in linksboks, i've decided to
experiment a bit on this library and here's the result.
how well does it work?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the original library could play any file in the flash 4 format and below. tomas
groth included support for compressed swf files so that flash 6/7 files are
supposed to work. however, there's a lot of remaining limitations:
- no sound on xbox! because there's quite a lot of work to do, and it doesn't
*work so well in linux too; no compressed (mp3...) support. but it will happen
*one day, i hope.
- no videos.
- problems with semi-transparent jpeg files (visible in the happy tree friends,
*for example ;)
- no text boxes, etc.
- no real-time downloading support or socket access (as far as i know).
- graphic glitches and performance issues here and there.
- probably a lot more...
but a lot of animations do work very well, if not perfect.
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/epafpflpepzyfmcshd.php
you can find the xbox swfxplayer and sourcecode on the usual places.
hehe maybe some day we can find some pieces of the swfxplayer in xbmc ?

i did a search for "flash" as well read the faq about support and found nothing on this topic, so i felt i should say something...
i am a homebrew fan of the dreamcast, have been since 1999. *it's a nice little machine that can do a lot. *however it is #2 on my list to my xbox.
i was pleased when i went on consolevision and saw that someone ported simple flash support to the dreamcast. *a start, which is great. *he did a lot of great stuff to it and it was fun testing it.
his source is public and so is the other information he used to build it. *all legal, all legit. *it is at: *http://www.sch3rz0.com/dcflash/
so the question is... *can it be added to xbmc? *there are many great flash goodies and i would love to be able to take them to my xbox.
thanks,
chris
i would like flash support as well
flash support im xbmc, imagine the skins :)

i did search on "flash" but did only find topics related to the bios, so my question is if the media center in the future will play flash files.
sorry for my bad spelling.
http://swift-tools.net/flash/ could be a starting point....
hello!
when we could expect support for flash (.swf) files?
i mean, xbox is so close to pc... is it so hard to make something like swiff player for pc? (http://www.globfx.com/products/swfplayer/)
yah its been requested alot.. i got a flash movie player in the bins and all it can do is play movie.swf without sound or control.
is there a better one than that out yet?
is there enough sources yet?
that wood be pretty cool to have a built in flash player in the xbmc even if it doesnt work all that great.
i personally would love to sit down at my tv, grab some ginger-ale and watch a marathon session of strongbad. i even tried to use some flash->avi convertors i found on the internet with the intention of making a dvd, but they were all crap when it came to anything that had actionscript. by which i mean not only interactive stuff (which is a big *duh* in terms of supporting via an automated program) but also stuff that wasn't. like skipping over a bunch of frames. the video came out fine but the audio became unsynced.

hi there! recently i have found a nice programm that is flash to video encoder pro 3.3 by geovid. its nice program helps to create create your own video or dvd collection by converting with flash to video encoder your favourite flash movies. record the passing of your favorite flash game to video file and save it to the future and etc. also you able to convert flash swf files to mp4 media contnt for your mobile devices.
you can find it in google.
can xbmc play .swf files? i dont want to waste a dvd if it cant.
can xbmc play .swf files? i dont want to waste a dvd if it cant.
no it can't.
can someone make a plug in....
i have some flash video files (.flv extension). are these playable in xbmc? i was hoping maybe they were just windows media video in a new container but i suspect it may be an entirely new codec.
no, afaik we dont support flash video
no, afaik we dont support flash video
i did some googling. turns out flash video is based on the sorenson "spark" codec, if that helps anybody.
maby this is something you guys can use to have xbmc play swf files..
player and it´s open source

i just came in to post the same idea, but you got there already!
ffmpeg / mplayer can decode flv (flash video), so would this be an easy addition to xbmc? i know very little about the backend, though obviously i'm familiar with xbmc development (cpblobs, woo!)
note that afaik this has nothing to do with swf, so i don't think the two topics should be lumped together.
before asking questions...

if you don't find what you want... rince and repeat several times before posting.

fyi; ffmpeg (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net) contains a new utility (in its cvs) called "cws2fws" that convert compressed flash-files to uncompressed ones, *which can be than played back with ffmpeg. maybe it could be ported to mplayer (or into a library/dll for xbmc?)?

yet another wonderful idea to expand xbmc's media capabilities! of course if links makes it in then we'de have a choice! hooray for democracy!
power to da people!!
awesome idea, swf has been been a missing feature or both xbmp and xbmc... would love to see some functionality!
i want to know if its possible to play flv files on xbmc and if not, how much work will it take to create some sort of codec for flv playback?
there are many tools for converting flv to avi and vice-versa. there are also many players that can play .flv files.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
http://www.erightsoft.com/super.html
http://www.martijndevisser.com/2005/10/flv_player_updated.html
http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/ffmpeg-doc.html#sec16
let me know if anybody wants to explore these possibilities??
momad
given that ffmpeg supports it, it should already be possible.. (depends a little on when it was added to ffmpeg). mplayer uses ffmpeg to play the codec, i suppose it might have some problems demuxing it thou.
i tested local playback of that file mentioned earlier, and that works, its a ffmpeg flash video
but http streaming does not work elupus

i think it would be great if you could put intergrate a flash player so we could watch flash animations and play flash games
one would need source for this.
how many open source flash players have you seen latly?
most of them that exists supports at the best flash version 4.
and what version do you think most of the flashes animation that is on the net requiers?
here is one open source that may be of interest.
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/
Has there been any changes as to whether or not flv is supported by XBMC. If so how do I add the codecs and extensions? thanks
there's a Youtube script included with the t3ch FAT build
Youtube uses .flv videos
So I'd say it's working :nerd:
I've allready mentioned this in a different tread, i think this is a really good feature to have.
Gnash is an open source flash video player, it's not as advanced as the official flash video player, but it supports most (if not all) games and s also able to play video from sites like youtube.
Having flash support would hopefully also mean new options for XBMC skins, but i'm not sure if it'll take to much resources for that or not.
Having the ability to view youtube videos, and let people play flash games would really be a great addition to XBMC i think.

Looks promising, problem is finding a skilled enough developer with time and interest to make it work as a player for XBMC
I'm sure getting a developer interested wont be that difficult, just look at what kind of options it would add to xbmc :)
getting one that's skilled enough is more difficult, i'm sure porting this to xbox will be quite the challenge.
Lets just hope that someone is willing to pick this up, and do pretty much all XBMC users a Big favor :laugh:

Hi there,
I host a weather station with the information LIVE on the internet.
It is displayed using a program called "Weather Display Live".
Live weather, Southern England (http://www.wighthobbies.co.uk/wdweather/wx3.html)
Is there any way i can get to see this on my TV through the xbox??
That would be great, either through the browser or a script of some kind?
Many thanks

I took a look at gnash a while ago, and imho it has too heavy dependencies like glib, boost, libmad, not mentioning cairo/gtk... (and so on, http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/manual/gnash.html#codedepend), the least thing XBMC needs is more library ports to xbox for a "niche" functionality.doh!

What are the chances that xbmc would get a flash player so that we could play flash games such as tower defense and so on or would it need to be done in python??
timdog82001
2007-10-18, 11:27
I would say the chances of that are about 0. Maybe on the linux version in the future, but that would be a ways off I'm sure, sometime after they're finished adding all the basic stuff. There's a flash player for the xbox right now (not part of XBMC) and to be honest its aweful. No sounds, video's choppy. From what I understand, its no easy task to (legally) add support for flash.
could you link to information (or download link) to this xbox flash player?
I couldn't find it anywhere.
Thanks.

It is part of LinksBoks (the webbrowser for Xbox) which is open source:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/software/software.php?page=mediaplayersswfx and swfxplayer
This is a decoding library for Macromedia Flash(tm) animations, compiled for use with homebrew applications compiled with the XDK.
Due to the number of requests for Flash support in LinksBoks, I've decided to experiment a bit on this library and here's the result.
Current Status:: v0.1
no download (built with XDK)
Official Website: http://ysbox.online.fr/ I believe this flash-player is a port of gameswf (an open source library), see:

I believe this flash-player is a port of gameswf (an open source library), see:
http://tulrich.com/geekstuff/gameswf.html
http://www.gotoandplay.it/spotLight/gameSwf/Looks like that port has actually been committed upstream to gameswf CVS on tulrich.com (http://tulrich.com/geekstuff/gameswf.html)
http://www.koders.com/cpp/fid785631003E457AD45F4585A14AAFB2DB4CE1E5C5.aspx?s =xbox
So you could try building the library from there if you have the XDK and a Visual Studio .NET 2003 enviroment

They do have a good open source flash player.
Just go here for people to see:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Open_Source_Flash_Player
Direct link from above:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/
Why not make this a subset of the browser integration? Does XBMC need another player? FLV BTW works right now. SWF can also be converted- and if there is no interface/interaction- it works well.
