View Full Version : Only have ~2.5GB of space on drive after softmod...

So, I did a softmod on my Xbox a while back using Krayzie Ndure save exploit and Splinter Cell. I seem to recall following the directions, backed up my C:\ drive and eeprom files, and FTP'd XBMC on over to the box.

Fast-forward a few weeks: I haven't had a chance to play around with the machine much, but I noticed that it only partitioned about 2.5GB of space on the E:\ drive where I have XBMC, EvoX and some emulators, and about 127MB on the C:\ drive, which appears to contain another backup of the original Xbox C:\ drive, I think.

So, didn't these things come with 8 or 10GB drives? When I FTP into it, it shows a D:\ and F:\ drive, but neither are accessible.

What gives?

I dont know about yours, but I know that mine only had a 4GB drive in it. Combine the few partitions that xbmc gives you and your total is about 4 GB...

Some of the ancients only had 5G drives

This is the default partitioning of an xbox hard drive, regardless of the actual size of the drive:

http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Hard_Disk_Partitioning

The Cache partitions are the X:\, Y:\, and Z:\ drives
The System partition is the C:\ drive
The Data partition is the E:\ drive

XBOX HDD facts and using XBMC as a Dashboard on a softmodded xbox.

Retail XBOXes have only ever had 8gb Western Digital or 10gb Seagate hdds fitted as standard.
The retail xbox hdd is formatted into 5 partitions that HAVE to follow the previously posted partition table. Only 8 gb is used with either hdd ie. the Seagate 10gb hdd has 2gb of unallocated space on it.

The C:\ partition is used to store the original M$ XBOX Menu. Mod dashes are often put in here when a modchip is fitted. This partition is approx .5gb in size.

The E:\ partition is used to store the game-save files, music ripped to hdd with MS original dash and store downloaded content from game discs and XBOZX Live.
Modded XBOX "Applications "software is often stored in here.
Crayzies Softmods install your new Operating System (Dashboard) in a folder called "Dashboard" in this partition. This partition is approx 4.5gb in size.

The X:\ , Y:\ and Z:\ partitions are all used by the xbox as a sort of ram area. When playing games from genuine XBOX game-discs the data is written to any of these partitions. It prevents lag during games while a dvd is being read ie. PS2 lag while the next scene in a game level is loaded up. Automatic downloads/updates are initially stored here until properly integrated into the system files. The size of each partition (X Y Z) is approx .75gb.

Any PC 3.5 inch IDE type hdd fitted thats larger than 8gb can have the remaining space allocated to either a single F:\ partition or an F:\ ( upto 137GB) and a G:\ partition (above 137gb).

Softmods setup a virtual C:\ partition and DONT show the correct size of the hidden data in the REAL C:\ partition.
When a softmodded xbox is booted via a modchip and UnleashX Dash is loaded, the REAL contents of the C:\ partition and the correct partition sizes (both total size and remaining space) are shown.

XBMC will work on either a Soft-Modded OR a Chip-Modded xbox.

The "Crayzies Softmod Installer" packs allow you to use either "UnleashX" or EvolutionX" Dashboard when it is being initially set up.
The "Crayzies Softmod Installer" packs all use a common folder ( E:\Dashboard ) to store the mod-dash software.
The contents of this folder can be replaced with the Latest XBMC.
Download XBMC from the ***** FTP Server (Google search).
Un-RAR the downloaded file and navigate into the "XBMC" folder
Transfer the entire contents of the XBMC folder into the E:\Dashboad folder on your xbox.
Ensure the executable file (it will have the file extension ".xbe" without the " " marks ) is called "default.xbe".
Delete the files in both of these folders... E:\Tdata\0face008 and E:\Udata\0face008.

Hopefully that sheds some light.

Cheers

The D:\ partition is the DVD Rom drives disc contents.
Pop in a game disc and the contents will show up in the D:\ partition.
An F:\ partition that shows no size has NOT been formatted.
Once a stock Seagate 10gb has an F drive formatted onto it, you'll gain about 2gb of extra space.

You CANT format an F:\ partition onto a standard XBOX Western Digital 8gb hdd.
