View Full Version : Xbmc Stays Stuck On Opening Files For Streaming Movie Through Network

boast

I'm trying to watch a movie from my computer to my xbox. For the sample (13.5mb) it plays the video fine. But when it comes to the movie (700mb), it stays stuck on "opening file, demux_open....., avi file format detected" and nothing happens- and after a while it just freezes.

This didn't happen before, so I don't know what the problem is. I'm using XBMC-CVS_2006-08-13-T3CH.

If its only that file that has a problem, then i would guess that the file is probably broken. Try copying it over the xbox hard drive as a test.

I've tried with two other movies and no luck. Tried streaming it from my linux computer instead of windows, but still the same problem- it gets stuck on that "opening file, demux_open(.....), avi file format detected"

It appears to be a server or network problem given all the samba errors. Not much we can do about that.

"16:40:39 M: 33497088 ERROR: XFILE::CFileSMB::Read - smbc_read returned error 10060"

Try another streaming protocol as a test.

I actually have the same problem.

I upgraded from a older verison of XBMC to this current version. The older version worked with pretty much everything, this current version is a hit or miss.

This source was from Feb 2, 2006 (for the old version).

The source for the current was from Aug 9th, 2006.

It is NOT a file/media issue, becuase it worked on the older version.

I was looking at the code earlier and I believe the 10060 error is translating back from winsock which means its a connection timeout error. Increasing the timeout value in advancedsettings.xml may fix the issue. The timeout defaults may have changed between samba versions.

This has the instructions.
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=AdvancedSettings.xml#.3Csamba.3E

I'd suggest setting the value really high (120 seconds) and working downward.

But, this does point to a server or network problem. Changing this timeout value just works around the problem.

I posted this earlier over in the Xbox-Scene forums.

Anyone else having problems playing files from a Replay TV box? I went back to the T3CH build of 8/27 and it works fine now. The latest T3CH build finds the Replay TV fine, but when i select a file to play from the Box it just freezes the XBMC with a message saying this.. Demux _Open (00EAd010,0,0,-1,-1,-1) and it never starts the movie playing. I even wiped everything out and installed a fresh copy of the lastest T3CH build and still same thing happens.

Please let me know if anyone else has this problem as well?

Thanks

Check if the date/time is the same on the Xbox and your ReplayTV: http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=ReplayTV

Sorry if i posted in the wrong thread, I have 2 Xbox's running XBMC and this is happening on both boxes. Like i stated in my post that i can roll back to an eariler XBMC build and it works just fine. This only broke in the last few days, and i did check the time on all the equipment and its the same. Thanks for trying to help.

Well, I had tried with both my Windows and Linux computers to rule out it being some sort of firewall or setting on my computers. And I can share and stream between computers, so I don't know about it being a network problem.

but, leaving the xbox for about 2 minutes on the 'demux_open', it will eventually load the movie, but really time choppy freezing every chance it can. So I guess it's a gamble to see if it will eventually play the movie, or will the xbox lock up.

I also had no problems streaming movies with the old XBMC. from like 7-#-2006.

Betweek computers, I get 6-8mbps, but ftping to my xbox is like 12kps.

The FTP-transfer was slow for me at first, but then I changed the "speed/duplex" settings of my network adapter on the pc to 100 Full Duplex.

I am issueing the same problems (demux_open hangs, choppy streaming) with XBMC-CVS_2006-09-13-T3CH.

The version I ran before was XBMC-CVS_2006-05-13-T3CH and didn't have these issues.

xbmc team, you get all my love :)

I just found this thread using google, and I am having the same problem with ReplayTV through my Xbox. I have the latest T3CH build of XBMC (9-13-06), and when I attempt to play anything through ReplayTV via the XBMC 'Videos" tab, it finds my RTV, displays all the videos on it, and whenever I choose one to play, it either locks up at the (Demux_Open) command, as someone in this thread mentioned earlier, or, it locks up at the...
"PICTURE::CreateThumbnail: Unable to open image:rt..."
"PICTURE::CreateThumbnail: Unable to open image:rt..."
...message window.
I have been unable to use the RTV through the XBMC at all in this build, and I have been testing and troubleshooting for days. I am guessing this is a build issue, as I have been updating at least every other build for the past three months or so, and loving all the updates/interface changes made in each build (it just keeps getting better and more ironed out in every new build).
Thank you for your help, if anyone knows what's up. Just a bit further, I have made sure the time is correct on both systems, tried different time servers, unplugged the xbox and the RTV system for a bit, then replugged. I made sure to do a 100% clean build update, by deleting the entire old XBMC directory, and adding the entire new one, and also deleting every old setting in UDATA and TDATA related to XBMC.
I'm anxious to hear there's a solution to this problem, because it is part of my nightly line-up to watch some replaytv stuff through xbmc with the shutdown timer script going, although I'm sure this bug is on the back burner, due to ReplayTV's not even being produced anymore.
Thank you even so!

by the looks of that log, mplayer isn't able to figure out what type of data it is receiving. that could be due to read errors in our rtv protocol, thou I don't think anything has changed there actually so i'm not sure what might have caused this.

Hmmm... Getting the same problem on XBMC 2.0.0 SLIM-FIXED-T3CH build...
On top of that, I just noticed that my ReplayTV (5060)'s hard disc is hammering at the beginning of this error. I can hear it racing and racing, and then it stops, while the XBMC is still trapped at the...

-------------------------------------------------------
Opening file

PICTURE::CreateThumbnail: Unable to open image: rt...
PICTURE::CreateThumbnail: Unable to open image: rt...
-------------------------------------------------------

window. The screen saver dimming still comes on when it is supposed to, after the program is frozen and everything. Also, you cannot "cancel" out of the "opening file" dialog. it just writes the word 'Canceling...' after 'Opening file :', and freezes up at that point.

Here is the debug-log: http://pastebin.ca/186531

(debug log is taken from FTP (which stayed connected) but the rest of XBMC is stuck in some kind of lockup where the screen still dims as if it's playing a movie [screen saver isn't set to 'dim' currently], but no controls work [apart from changing the volume or clicking the button to activate Cancel], you can't cancel, and if you bring up the right-thumbstick-click menu, and click 'system info', it shows info, but it locks up and no controls work at all.)

Thanks! (if there's anything else to do to help in this matter, say the word)

EDIT: oops, first pastebin wasn't in debug mode. Re-uploaded log and updated URL.

Once again, read existing posts before posting:I doubt it is released to the issue this topic-thread was opened for. Check if the date/time is the same on the Xbox and your ReplayTV: http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=ReplayTVstill don't think your ReplayTV issue is related here, so your post is OFF-TOPIC, ...now it probebely is a real bug (if you have the correct time set on both your Xbox and your ReplayTV box) but it's not related to this specific topic, please post a new topic-thread (and a proper bug-report, see the online manual), thanks in advance

I had a similar problem. Playing a movie from the xbox hdd it worked fine. Playing a movie over the network would either freeze up xbox before playing anything, or would sit at opening file. I changed the Video LAN cache from 4092 to 1024 and it has worked fine now.

If you want a quick work around for the demux problem just use the dvdplayer instead of the mplayer to play the files and it works like a charm.

Highlight the file and hit either the black or white button (sorry I have my remote all personalized and it will give you the option to
play using... select this option and then choose the dvdplayer.

Does anyone know how to make the dvdplayer the default for the replay files?

Hope this helps

You cant without modifying the source code.

I've added some additional debug logging to the rtv protocol, so any of you with replay troubles, it'd be nice with some feedback on that.

Update to latest CVS and build new XBMC as elupus just mentioned. He was pretty clear that he added some new debug logging.

seems you cut the last line from the log, (or even more), don't think it matters thou.

could you try copying a short file from the replay box to the xbox hd using filemanager in xbmc. If that still fails to play, could you get that file to me?

Doh. I'm an idiot  . I was going to run the file test myself but forgot.

Anyway, I can play the file (which is .mpg format) directly off the hard drive and my NAS server as well.

Do you need me to re-send the log. It may have seemed cut off because it froze the box so I had to reset it. :;):

Does the 2.01 release have any additional RTV logging? If so should I post another log?

I will have the time to do it tomorrow or this weekend for sure.

I just thought i should mention that I have the demux_open problem too. It is not consistent though. Never had the problem via samba, but since that is broken against Vista I had to resort to upnp. I've tried both WMP11 and TVersity, and the problem appears with both. It is not consistent however. Sometimes the file will stream, and sometimes not. A restart often fix it.
Does it have some connection with this issue here (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21979)? Apperantly spiff fixed that demux_open bug...

I have a very similar problem to this.

For certain files, when I try opening them, it says "AVI format detected," then moves to, typically, but not always,

"opening.... mpeg 2 layer 3...", or something like that, and hangs.

If i try to hit cancel, it doesn't work. It always requires a reboot.

It has also gotten stuck on the "demux" thing, and also today on something about "endian"...

The weird thing is this: it only does this for certain files, and always for those files. I can play 3 out of 4, but then a specific movie won't play, no matter what. I actually got one of the movies to play off a DVD, but for some reason, certain movies WILL NOT stream via smb!!! This is true of probably 10 different video files I have - all of them xvid.

I had the same problem, any video I played over the network would freeze.

Read on one of the forums that the problem is that the xbox is running out of memory.
I went to the CACHE settings in XBMC and decreased a few of the settings, works %100 now.

I read that this is most common with HD display settings.

Hope this helps!
