i think it would be great if you guys implemented such a feature. my whole family uses the computer (3 years to 60 years) - and there is certain things i would like to keep for myself... like private pictures and horror movies ++

xbmc looks really nice...

hi guys,

firstly can i say how great xbmc appears to be. i really love the clean look of it.

what i think is great is the ability to navigate between directories to find movies to watch, but some of us need *certain* directories to be password protected so that *certain* people can't watch *certain* movies if you know what i mean.

so yeah, if we can protect our special directories where we store our adult movies that would be great.

thanks!

a possible work around is using 2 installs, one with the xml configured for say, both 'sets' of videos, or one solely for teh pr0n. and using mxm which allows you to password protect menu items (from games, apps, action scripts, bla bla).

true but i never got the hang of mxm. plus i eventually will replace my dash with xmc, when it matures a little.

also most people mention p0rn, however i would like to restrict all movies i feel are unsuitable for the kids (too violent, bad language etc..), and maybe create a share with only films i feel they should have access to.

love to see passwords configurable in the .xml file. set a bookmark with a passwords (or even passcode entereted in by the remote or gamepad). sort of like unleashx does. thanks.

to those of you wanting to hide your adult movies from the rest of the family, here's what you do until password protection is implemented.
i'm running xbmc as dash, so the xml in the c root is the family friendly version and then i can open xbmc from my programs in e:\apps\xbmc for other times ;)

i would love to protect some shares on my media server pc. for example i have:

media server:
- horror ( password protected )
- action ( password protected )
- cartoons ( not protected )

basically have the option in the xml file so that i could protect a share or any folder on my xbox with a password so that my kids will not be able to view the inside of that folder.

also good for nosy girlfriedns *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

something like ( stolen from unleash x support forum hehe )

someone posted a zip file a while back that when extracted creates foles 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.0 and in turn recursively 4 levels deep (10,000 folders total) . this in essence allows you to store the adult content in a folder in the fourth level with a "pin" such as 2-3-0-2 that must be navigated to to see the files.

that's what i'm using for my porn. keeps the kiddies out for now ;-)

i'd love to see password protection though.

wouldn't doing like an imdb scan and listing by movies kill that idea?

i would like to add another vote for a parental lock type system. *i can think of 1000 uses for different people:

- hiding your p0rn collection from the girlfriend/mum etc
- stopping the kids watching violent movies
- not letting your friend know you have an extensive brittany spears music video collection etc.

(ok, maybe not 1000, but a fair few).

anything would be pretty easy to circemvent out side of xbmc, but a simple 4 digit pin should be fine for 99.9% of users. *and it is a feature that shouldn't be too hard to implement too.

zilch.

i would like this feature too but i got some other ideas.
protecting a folder or a share it’s fine but what about local media? the protection should be applied to a file according to a range of properties (pg-pg13-r-pr0n) which should be added the first time you try to play it. an example would be if i put a dvd or a cd that hasn't been authorized it will prompt for a password and after that it will let you apply the properties, otherwise it won’t play. (the ratings for movies could be downloaded from imdb)
other approach could be a user system where each user has his/her own password and settings. i am not much of a programmer but probably a phyton script that prompts for a user name and password when xbmc starts, then renames predefined xml files for each user and then restarts xbmc with the selected xml file. if phyton is able load and accept input from the onscreen keyboard it might be doable. i’m going to look at this second approach i might be able to write the script. it won’t solve the problem with local media but you could still protect shared folders.

hi!

sometimes it would be nice to secure some files/folders etc. with a password protection.

to open a folder/start a xbe you have to type in the correct password in a virtual keyboard.

the password could be "deposited" in a xml?

i don`t want that my kids play games with violence or something like that.
that`s my job. :)

is this feature planned in upcoming releases?

22 posts and still you haven't mastered the search button.

Yawa

of course i tried the search button, but found only topics for password protected streams, shares.

i need a password protection in xbmc for the games on hd.
of course, for shares too.
the shared files/folders should be all visible, but some shared files/folders needs a password protection.

try:

http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin....40a153a (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=search&code=02&sid=41518aae140a153a)

quite a few of those threads could have been resurrected instead of starting a new one.

and to answer your question: yes, it's planned.

ok, thanks!
i entered password in the search, but only 4-5 threads were found!?

password protect a video folder, i know this has been asked b4 is it possible to know if its plannedsince it's been asked before and there is an existing thread why do you insist in opening a new thread for it! don't do that again!

how about this, i sure would like to see this.

a feature to password-protect shares. it doesn't have to be anything secure, just so something not too literate can't figure it out.

example, where you define the share just make another key (for example) that says 'xaax'. then whenever you access that share from xbmc it will prompt you for a password, and then using the xbox controller you hit x a a x, and it will let you see the content.

or else maybe something on startup to allow different profiles to be selected (and password protect them also) which then have access to certain shares or perhaps they hold their own config (xml) entirely.

mainly, i have some "questionable" content on share, and now i got some new roommates moving in who will eventually find it.

anyway let me know what yall think!
