View Full Version : My Network Places
just an idea, not sure if it's possible with samba yet, but would be cool to have the xbox auto discover available windows shares like windows xp does.
it could then auto add these bookmarks.
have u actually tried?
select add media source, select browse, select smb://. voila.
is this the same as adding smb:// in xboxmediacenter.xml ?
i've got this, and it lets me browse by workgroup, then computer then shares...
what i wanted was something similar to xps
automatically search for network folders and printers
found under
tools->folder options -> view -> automatically search for network folders and printers
it will add shortcuts to each share on each computer it finds.
like "c on orange" "movies on plum" (where orange and plum are computer names)
well, let me just say;
never gonna happen.
but the dialog makes it very simple to add bookmarks to whatever server is hanging around (hence no need to browse every time).
yeah, was just an idea of something that might make life easier for some people.
i've never actually used the dialog, and woudln't even know where it is. i set up my shares a long time ago, when the only way to do it (that i knew of) was to edit the xml file.
since then i pretty much copy and paste into the new xml file whenever i upgrade.
thanks for the advice on the dialog, i'll look at the manual to see if i can find it.
just to clearify; reason i wouldn't want this and dismissed it in a way that might seem categoric; it's because it is.
i endorse any function that makes usage easier.
i do not endorse any function that enables users to stay ignorant. meaning even more n00bs coming running when the function fails to function properly.
imo this falls into the second category. other devs might have other views though.
in my view, nobody should even be allowed to buy networking gear without first looking up and understanding the basic terms (gateway, dns, ip, subnet to name the most important). this would enable them to not even get a grasp of what a smb share is..
edit: dialog hint; check context menu in root share.
thanks for the hint, i'll give it a try tonight.
my view is that if people don't need to know this stuff, then the sofware is very useable.
geeks who know this stuff (including me) know the details of how to set up shares etc, and as you say there is a dialog which i'm sure is very useful. i'm not sure that if a user didn't even have to use the dialog to add all the shares on all the pcs on their network then they are ignorant. it just means that the xbox is even easier to use.
(i admit, if they aren't geeks then they may not have a home network of media servers to add to xbmc)
anyway, thanks for the tip, i'm sure it'll be very helpful.
can't wait for the anon cvs to come back online so i can get a fresh build of xbmc
(i could alwasy go the t3ch route but i like to roll my own :)
well, in my view 'geeks' are only those that actually bother to try to learn.
and i really think that basic knowledge is something everybody should obtain, either willingly (optimal) or through necessity (which is why i don't like these stupidifying functions). but anyway, let's leave it there.
what i posted to say is that if u search around a bit you will find that there's a 'cvs' backdoor so u can checkout the fresh stuff now, without waiting for anon. if u can't find it here in the forums, try #xbmc.
wow, tried that dialog for adding shares, so simple.
i'll definately be using that in the future, probably won't need to edit the xml file much more :)
apparantly the cvs should be back online tomorrow, i can wait.
i'ts gonna be a big change from the 30/3 release i'm running now. :)
