NAS for XBMC?

hi,

i'm getting settled into xbmc and now i want to start expanding its media potential :p

i'm looking to get a nas device to serve all my media which would mean my pc didn't have to do the grunt work. i've been looking around and the thecus n2100 (http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=1&pid=1) is the one i am after. i think it should play nice with xbmc but i'd appreciate it if someone in the know could check the spec and tell me if it looks good on paper :)

it has already got a mention in the pinned topic (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=10;t=3508) but nothing was confirmed. i think it should be ok because it offers smb support as well as working with the likes of windows, os x and linux. a review can be found here (http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=4342) for anyone that is interested.

2 questions:
1. are you looking to spend money
2. exactly what all do you plan on using it for (mass data, backup, etc.

if your not looking to dump alot of cash just try naslite (http://www.serverelements.com/naslite.php). i got an older hp tower, spent 300 and dumped 4 250g drives in it and have nowhere near reached capacity.

2 answers:

1. i'd rather not spend much really. but have priced it up and it'd be less than 60p per gb and that's a price i'm happy with.

2. i plan to use it for holding all my media, so mass storage i guess. i'd like to rip all my dvds to it and stuff like that because i love using xbmc for watching and listening to stuff.


it's not that i want to spend a fortune on it but i am looking at it as an investment. it'd be part of my media setup in the future when i move into a bigger flat that can justify a plasma telly with another xbox running xbmc and stuff like that :p

looking at the spec of the thecus does it look capable of working with xbmc?

i think so (jfs), there is a thread here (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=10;t=3508;hl=buffalo) where other users have posted issues/comments on network storage devices that you may find useful as well.

thanks for that. the thread you linked seems to be just for people who have tested nas drives rather than inquisitive people like me ;) (i wanted to post this in there but it seems to be strictly for people to report if a drive works rather than posing the question)

i'd love to hear if anyone has actually used the drive or has any other opinions on its use with xbmc. it's pay day soon and i might bite the bullet and give it a shot, but a bit more investigation first.

it was mentioned 3rd post in but it was only suggested and hasn't been confirmed yet :( but like that post mentioned, it should work in theory... but we all know theory can be different to practice ;)
